During the Cold War, the U.S. military constructed a defensive ring of Nike missile sites around Chicago, including flooded bunkers in Hegewisch and Wolf Lake and the Blast Camp in Wheeler, Indiana, which were originally built to prepare for potential nuclear attacks but have since been abandoned and repurposed, with the Wheeler site now serving as a paintball park where children play in the same barracks where soldiers once prepared for the end of the world.

Abandoned Bunkers & Eerie Forests Hidden South Side HistoryAdded:
On the south side, at Hegewisch and Wolf Lake, the forest has completely taken over. It's eerie. For years, you could find the old elevator doors hidden in the weeds. If you were brave enough to peek inside, you'd see the flooded bunkers, massive concrete rooms now filled with green water and rusted metal. And then, there's the site in Wheeler, Indiana. This is probably the most famous one because it's now a paintball park called Blast Camp. It's the ultimate irony. You have kids running around with neon paint, screaming and having fun in the exact same barracks where soldiers once prepared for the end of the world.
