How you breathe under anesthesia

[00:00:00]So, what happens when you go under anesthesia? My Ukrainian colleague is about to show you.

[00:00:04]>> [music] >> That white stuff is propofol, so that's the stuff that's going to make you fall asleep. The mask is the oxygen mask or delivering 100%. He's checking that the jaw is relaxed, ready for the intubation. Notice how smoothly and calmly he's doing everything. There's no stress. It's controlled.

[00:00:23]He's visualizing the vocal cords. Some external manipulation of the cricoid [music] is sometimes necessary to align the view. There's a breathing tube with a stylet. The stylet makes the breathing tube much more rigid, [music] allowing you to really get it in there.

[00:00:39]Make sure you can manipulate it cuz once the stylet comes out, the tube is plastic, so it moves around a lot.

[00:00:45]Now you're in.

[00:00:47]Connect to the ventilator. And now you want to make sure you have end-tidal CO2, which is how you know you're in the right place.
