Parasites can alter the behavior of their hosts through a phenomenon called the extended phenotype, where the parasite's genes influence host behavior to increase the parasite's own survival and transmission. For example, rhizocephalan barnacles manipulate male crabs to care for the barnacle's offspring as if they were their own, and trematode parasites infect snails to make them more visible to birds, facilitating transmission to the next host.

Marine Biologist Plays Subnautica 2 Early Access - Part 8Added:
It's time again.
Episode 8. I keep filming lots of these in succession, but of course in real life today is the day that Subnautica is released, so I planned it out where I can have the whole day to film.
We're going to see how long these contacts last cuz they're kind of irritating me. Uh I have sensitive eyes.
But anyway, let's get started. I have consumed food.
I need to be better about drinking water.
As we could see even in the game, I neglect the fact that I need to both consume food and drink water.
But I have consumed food and I have drank water.
Um Also, I've had time to think whilst I was [music] eating.
But I will give you those thoughts in a minute.
Also, I'm part of like the official Subnautica team on Twitch.
Uh it just makes me so happy. I I can't believe this is happening. Uh again, shout out to Unknown Worlds like Game Devs, who are, remember, humans.
Everybody that makes games is human.
Please remember that when you say terrible things to Game Devs. We left on a cliffhanger last time because I needed to eat really, really badly.
Uh but I'm okay now. I have consumed food, we're good. I ate lunch way too late.
But I'm good now.
Uh chat is also saying, "Hey, I found you on YouTube. I'm going to college for marine biology. Any advice?"
Congratulations for going to school for marine biology.
You're going to hate this.
If you're going to grad school, you have to take physics.
You probably should take cell and molec cuz usually they'll ask that you take that course, depending. And you're going to have to take chemistry classes. I'm really sorry. The other like main thing is try to get into research early. It doesn't have to be marine biology research. It just needs to be research.
Um getting research experience is going to be helpful whether or not you're trying to get on the job market straight out of your bachelor's degree or if you're trying to do a master's or a [music] PhD. If you're trying to do a master's or PhD, you need research.
Um but yeah. So, I'm going to pop that bubble.
We are not done getting rid of the [music] virus and I need to get another battery.
So, I'm also going to be smart.
And I That's not what I needed, but it will be useful.
Um I'm going to be smart and also make All systems online.
health for myself.
Several healths before we go back and finish.
I also I had thoughts again as I mentioned while I was eating cuz then I was like, "Oh, sustenance. Now my brain work again."
Uh, but I'm not going to I'm not going to talk about the thoughts until we get back there so that way it makes more sense to everyone.
How does that sound?
That way it's a cohesive line of thought for everybody involved.
I keep thinking there's four around these but there's not, there's three.
Oh, it's like conveniently right underneath the life pod.
We should also get some water.
I grab all of these because we're going to put some of these.
Inventory is full.
Of course it is.
I'm going to get rid of one of these.
Because I desperately need that. 60 seconds.
60 seconds.
Happy third stream everyone. Can't wait for the fifth stream tomorrow.
Uh I am back everybody, yes.
I've eaten, I'm good.
Okay, first battery.
Second.
What am I doing?
One.
Two.
One.
Two.
And it be smart to make a third.
All right.
We will or we'll be rebuilding this, let me tell you.
Okay. Oop, did not mean to do that.
Oh, and I also need to replace this.
Reload.
No, that that did not do it.
That did nothing.
Also, why is the light on?
No. Unload.
And then you may reload.
Load.
Fantastic.
Water.
Yeah, I can't wait until I have like a set up base, and then I can go collect a crap ton of stuff and have it just like I used to do with the other streams, so we don't have to spend time trying to find stuff. We can just get into it.
And the game, as I mentioned, the game's looking gorgeous today.
Um Oh, automod found somebody that was trying to do crazy stuff. They were trying to spam the chat, but automod didn't allow it. Good job, automod.
Hi, fish.
But you can't go fast like that. No.
I dare you.
Anyway, um I don't remember. [music] Let me give more advice about marine biology. I'll do that. Um that's not what I want, but while we're waiting I can talk about that. So, I would also say that if you're doing marine biology, also make sure that you get foundations in other areas. So, like well, you would need ecology to do marine biology anyway, but I would say like do um marine or do ecology because then like if you can't find a job or position in marine biology, then you'll have something in ecology for example.
[music] Um know the broad strokes of things because that will help you tremendously either in your field or in case the job market ends up being a little bit tighter than you expect it to be.
Um What else?
Uh Welcome aboard.
Again, getting research experience is very necessary and it does not it doesn't have to be marine biology experience and it also does not have to be like let's say related with what you plan on doing. You just need to get the experience is the key of conducting research and and learning how it works. Particularly too, cuz some people are on the fence [music] of deciding whether or not they want to do research or they want to do a master's. And so, if you do a research project and you find out, "Oh, I hate doing research."
Really good for you to know at the undergrad stage instead of going straight into a masters and being like, oh god, I hate research and I don't want to do this and then you're trapped in a masters. Um Okay.
Sorry, I'm multitasking. [music] I would also say if you can start going to conferences early, do it. There are lots of great conferences that are student friendly. So, one example is um Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology.
They are very very student friendly.
They've even had high schoolers come.
And why did I not use this for whatever?
Um They've even had high schoolers that come and can present their research.
It's a really lovely conference. It's held every year in January. There's lots of other conferences, too, that are are friendly. And Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology is very um Oh, it's much closer than I thought it was. Is very uh broad. It's not like just marine biology.
One that's a lot more marine biology focused if you ever want to end up on the East Co- or like East Co- sorry, the West Coast is Western Society of Naturalists is really good.
I went there once.
Um and had a good experience.
Oh my god, I'm going to try.
>> I'm going to die.
I'm going to die.
And I don't remember where the air is here.
Got it.
Wasn't there another one that I was fighting?
And it wasn't this one.
>> [gasps] >> It wasn't this one.
There's another one.
We need to go visit the other one cuz there was another one, too.
Mhm.
Insert hand.
Heat tolerance, baby.
Yes.
But I can't survive this shark.
Okay.
Does it say anything here?
That's nice, but I remember specifically that there was another one that we need to go go help.
They were fighting.
Um so the the hypothesis that I had that came up is there was the other one that had all of the the things like attached to it.
I don't know what they are, parasites [music] probably.
Um but it had all of the parasites attached to it and they were like it's more aggressive.
Um so with parasites, don't you dare. There is something really cool.
Um it can be referred [music] to as the extended phenotype. I heard fix parasite. Yeah, I know I'm talking about parasites. Um it's something known as the extended phenotype.
And so parasites can alter the behavior of their host through different means.
Uh see there's something over here.
And somewhere there should be oxygen.
Anyway.
There's lots of examples. I've talked about rhizocephalans on here prior in a I think it was like the first or the second video or the third. I've edited as of right now I've edited three.
But um so it could be any of those.
But let's see.
Maybe it's on the other side. Anyway, um so like for example, rhizocephalan or not rhizocephalan, crab males would normally never care for juveniles in in like their abdomen, but the rhizocephalan barnacle puts their babies in a pouch on the male or abdomen of the male, and so the male um cares for the offspring like it's the male's own even though they're not. And so that's changing behavior. There's different worms or not worms, um there are trematodes which I've also talked about as kind of a a loaded terminology that's not always accurate um depending on who you talk to.
Let's go back this way.
Where is that other one? Uh but anyway, they will go inside of snails and they'll like strobe essentially, and that makes [music] them more visible to birds so that way the birds can eat them, and they'll like it changes their behavior so that way they'll crawl up in the places that they're more discreet.
Um and so often times what will happen is you have these parasites that have to be transferred from one host to the next often through consumption, but not always.
And so they if they make it where the behavior of the predator or the predator I can't speak anymore. If the behavior of the host is changed, um then it makes it where it's more likely that they're going to go into the next host.
And so the aggressive behavior could be because the virus is changing the behavior of these animals to make it where they can spread the virus more through contact is my hypothesis.
I didn't say that as coherently as I normally would, but my brain's a little bit like, "Wee!"
I will punch you.
There was another one that had a bunch attached. Was it this one?
I guess so.
But then if that was the case, we'd also have a beacon.
And then I don't know.
Oh, well, maybe that's it.
Oh.
Well, guess what?
There it is.
So it wasn't here.
I guess we're done. I I don't know.
So Oxygen.
All right.
First, let's look.
Signals.
Yeah, so I guess we're done. We've taken care of that.
And I think we're done with the Angel Cove.
So Now we're just going to go to the Tadpole.
Tadpole?
I can't speak anymore.
We got to go to the Tadpoles.
Tadpole pants.
Where are they?
I love that it Why did you scare me?
Big guy.
I thought it was a Nibbler just staring at me.
A nibbler mango.
There's a nibbler mango.
Speaking of which I was like, maybe I should lock in now.
Oh god, it is 640 m away.
And the battery is about to run out on [music] this.
Also, I really really want to scan those scary things in um in the void. However, they came up so they kind of came out of nowhere.
And then they like do a sound wave at you.
And then they get you. And I just I don't know how we would scan them particularly without some kind of stasis rifle.
I just don't think it's going to work.
So, I'm not going to try it.
I I would also say I would like it if we had the temperature at all times because me being like my scientist brain I I >> [snorts] >> Sure. I I need it. I got to see. I have to know what temperature it is.
Um I also imagine Is Is this 46 47° C?
Cuz that's hot as heck.
And I do like the the color change to kind of resemble I just felt the fear of God.
Friends.
That looks an awful lot >> like the Collector Leviathan.
And I just felt the fear of God in me.
Okay.
Uh I feel fear in a way I don't know that I've felt in a while.
Like I'm legitimately breathing heavily right now.
And it may be nothing.
But I doubt it.
And it's dead silent.
30 seconds.
Just make it to this.
It might just be rocks just to scare me.
That looks like rocks.
>> [sighs] >> Okay, so I got the fear God putting me for nothing.
Um All right.
Nothing to fear. Collection of the virus and just add you to their our collection of shiny things. I don't think so.
Uh we also still have yet to find the last fragment for the repair tool.
But yeah.
I'm Approaching derelict structure.
Echo analysis detects a precipitous silence.
Be alert for a sudden drop in the seafloor.
Why did even the PDA sound nervous?
So these are just structures that Of course you're there.
All right, there's tadpole hands.
Great. Oh, wrong thing. Well, sure.
>> I need you all to understand.
I felt legitimate fear.
And I don't normally feel that during games.
You want to watch your tone now.
For what?
Inventory. 30 seconds.
They got to change that. That sounds so creepy.
Can I go in here?
We're pretty deep.
30 seconds.
All right, hold on. We're going to We're really deep.
And we don't have another Oxygen.
This is going to be tricky.
Cuz we don't We don't yet have Oops. I keep doing it.
We don't have another tank. I haven't found any yet. There was something that looked like it could have been.
Hello.
Poor recipe. Um there was another one that looked like it could have been in that one Uh it wasn't the not the camp one, but it was the other place.
But >> 30 seconds.
I thought it was going to read something, but I guess not.
Oxygen.
>> Well, yeah, we don't have a better tank, which is I think what I was trying to say.
Yeah, that's what she's frustrating.
And I don't know if it just doesn't exist yet or what. And then, of course, we also don't have a repair tool, which is really really frustrating.
Because, boy, do I need it.
All right.
I don't know how you would have gotten here without a tattoo. I'm just going to be that honest.
I'm sure somebody will do it.
It's very Macy's syndrome.
Many of us have disappeared. You are about to join them. You do not need to go to the tree.
You will not find anything. Noel will print a new fork for you.
Your memory will be reverted. There is no Jubilee except finishing the job.
What?
30 seconds.
I'm not worried, Captain. Hold on, cuz there's a Jubilee.
There's something in here.
But I keep meaning to read and then forgetting.
There's so much information.
Uh thing two black box.
>> Are you tired of death and fear?
Do you know that this world doesn't have to be our enemy?
Do you feel the call of the tree?
Do you know the day of the Jubilee is coming? When we are released from our debts and allowed to live our lives, find us at camp one. Oh, we already read that. Sophie Jubilee.
Cruella cruel tie record day 620. Sophie Boucher entering. Anita Gotshall and five others left Howl's Haven protest of my decision to end medical treatment for the sick. They call themselves the Jubilee. They are going to move back to camp one for now. Anita claims her group can live in the open sea.
Did you all see what I saw?
Because I didn't like those.
She believes the planet is trying to give us what we need to survive through the angel codes. I insisted on giving them physicals. They are lucid and rational, no worse off than the rest of us. I can't prove that they are leaving because of May's field. I can't convince Anita that she is in the thrall of the virus that compels her to the tree like a rat whose parasites drive it into a cat's jaws.
Toxoplasmosis of a baby.
See, this is what I was talking about.
That right there.
Extended phenotype.
Interesting. I asked Noah not to reset them when they die, but I suspect it will anyway. Everyone will blame me, well then so be it. I must ask Nehima, what will happen to the ecosystem if the Jubilee group eats everything. Dead air.
Damn it. Damn it. Damn it. Damn it.
Damn.
Frozen tyrant.
It's not a real mind, not like you have.
It can learn facts, but it can't change how it thinks.
[music] And why would it? Let me quote the manual. Noa cephalopod-inspired architecture uses a minimal central executive to govern limb nodes at remote work sites as a frozen AI. Noa is unable to revise its architecture at the runtime, reliably controllable by less intelligent systems such as human operators, except under extreme situations and in total octopods. Oh, I think I've read this before.
Uh it won't let you die. No, not its precious workforce.
If you become uncontrollable, it'll wipe your memories and start over. No anger, no resentment, a nice clean you. Change?
Why would it want to change? The damn thing is in heaven.
We must voluntarily die.
Media chipped or shattered, recovering intact sectors. If we are not the last of humanity, then we have no reason to suffer on a hostile world. Our survival is not the last hope of the human species. The other thing I'm thinking is that based on the way that they're talking, like for example that like something about economists were trying to figure out why Riley Robinson went back to being a colonist instead [music] of trying to be a motivational speaker.
They're like saying that like it's in the past and they like say that um Sam's blowing up uh the excuse me, the the Kara site.
And Below Zero put them back years from Alterra and Kara. And then somebody in my YouTube comments, I think, somewhere. I saw somewhere.
Um I think it is the YouTube comments.
Maybe. I don't remember. Somebody, somewhere, said that it appears like for us to get scanned and like put into bodies and such that what must have happened is that Alterra finally got a hold of the Architect technology and I was like yep, probably.
Um and I had mentioned that too at the beginning of my playthrough. I was like, "This is interesting cuz this is kind of similar to what um what and I might have thought it and then actually not said it, but I was like, "This is kind of similar to what Al-An was used to uh or Alan, but he said at the beginning that he wanted to be called Al-An, so that's what I'm going to do. But anyway, um we had to invent the lie of Maisfield Syndrome in order to pathologize what our bodies already know is true. We do not belong on this world. We are here and we deserve happiness, but the right way to seek happiness is to explore the wonders of Proteus and then find a place to donate our nutrients.
Okay.
What?
What?
The heck?
This place is messed up, man.
Dining room chair, baby, for our place.
Stool, which we've already scanned.
Yeah.
I love that there's just like pieces of coral floating around.
>> 10 seconds.
One word, captain. Why, thank you. I'm getting out.
Will I ever find the second repair tool?
Who knows? Kenzel here.
Nine survivors of habitat with me.
Tubo went back to habitat and Who is that, Kenzel? The name Meryl Breach took Ruby.
I don't know if she'll be re-printed.
I've heard her die so many times.
But this time she's got to be out there somewhere.
She's got to. The tadpole pen's control room is locked and all the tadpoles are gone.
Sophie and Nahema took the last two.
We're stuck. We voted eight to one.
We're going to go down into the hot caves.
We all feel a pull there.
We know it's a maze field hallucination.
Yes, Twinkle, we know.
But hey, Anita said, "If we ask the world for help, maybe it'll answer.
And it's not all crazy. There's a bio bed at the base camp and Zip Zip died at the bottom of that cave.
She had a karate access key that could get us through this lock.
If you find this, we headed due southwest to the hot caves.
Hang on, Ruby.
Going to now do southwest.
Um there was another one on the wall.
Oh, it was right here.
The Noah behind this Oh, that's so weird. The Noah behind this door controls the tadpole clamps. The door is locked by a tool tie level pass code between maze field and tubely situation.
We can't risk any more rogue trips. It's a protected zone. Relations with the segments are bad enough already. If you want a tadpole, you'll need medical clearance and blah blah blah. Well, we already have one, so not an issue.
I'm going to freaking die.
I've got to find if there's a better tank because this is just not cutting it.
And I don't have any flashlights, either.
Key card required.
Under extreme circumstances, your scanner can rip 30 seconds.
of high-ranking colonists.
Good work, Captain.
Battery on that one is dying, too.
So, we need a black box.
That's what I'm hearing.
30 seconds.
I don't think that I can sit Yeah.
Dedicated core. Lots of things just got unlocked.
Scout ray chases.
Or casses or whatever. It has agility.
Vasteel ingot.
Advanced wiring kit, dedicated core.
Strong acid.
We're so close to that darn repair tool.
So what?
Okay.
This can get undone.
Plasteel ingot to tame lithium. Well, we're going to find lithium. It's probably down here.
I think it is a lot.
Oh god.
Yeah, so this is their moon pool.
A heat warning? I thought that I was tolerant.
Another heat warning, Captain.
lab chair >> 30 seconds.
Oxygen.
Seek fresh water intake.
Oops.
Mhm, what's Oh, we already have a closet. I should have looked at the map. That would have been super helpful.
This base got destroyed.
30 seconds.
Oxygen.
I hear strange sounds.
Wall vent.
A narrow breach is here, which I mean, I knew it. I literally saw it earlier. Um Trash can.
>> Trash can.
God, I hate those things.
They're so annoying and what?
Thirty seconds.
Can't go in there.
God, they sound so scary. They did such a great job.
The navigation computer has transmission to alert. I'm sure it has.
>> Return to the life pod on your own time.
Yes.
What's this?
Uh Chat is asking if I've encountered any game play bugs. Hold on.
>> Attention all sand base going out to all lovers, pukers, pronounced and other non pilots. I am the senior of two qualified drivers in this mess. You will listen to and obey our instructions or lose your tadpole privileges. Rule one, if you qualified on the sea moth or space moth, you should be ready to handle a tadpole.
Rule two, if you did not qualify, you will need training under bosun's mate robot or myself. This is not optional.
Rule three, mind your trim, mind the current, mind your heat. Remember, tadpole is not actively cooled. Rule four A, our tadpoles were configured for the Zizuran aquifers, so they come in a minimal config. Plug the core into a chassis. If you need to enter a cramped space, you can detach the core. Rule 4B, but always bring your chassis home. If you forget one, you will be visited by your disappointed ancestors. Rule 5, respect the crush depth. If you need to go deeper, you'll need a depth module.
Rule 6, keep an eye on your power and ear on your noise. My dear husband, who Noah will not yet print more than one of, monitors all tadpole traffic on sonar. There are other things out there which love to crack hard shells and get at the meat inside. If you run out of power, Ganzo might be able to hear you screaming before they find you. Rule 7, have fun. This is your chance to visit the elevated spiritual plane where pilots dwell. P.S., if you want to hear awful recordings of me dying, come by the scanner room when my husband isn't there.
You and your husband have an interesting relationship.
Also, I finally found the storage on this bad boy.
Right there.
Well, never mind.
Can't put anything. I don't think I found any I thought that I couldn't get inside of this uh at one point, but I was wrong.
I don't really do much.
So, they said due southwest.
I don't know how much longer we have with this tadpole, to be honest, cuz I can't find any freaking repair tools or fragments, but it's fine because now that the game is out, people probably have found them on the internet and I can find that.
Cuz I can't take it anymore.
I need a repair tool.
I need a repair tool like I need air.
There is a second story here.
See if I can get inside.
There's stuff in there. Oh, I can't get in there because I have to Yeah, there's a the pneumatic advisor.
That I'm supposed to be getting to, but I can't.
Where's the marrow breach? They said due south.
Brook.
So when I was here, they said due south up here. So the way that it was trying to push me up anyway.
So somewhere up this way.
I see it.
Hold on my contact word.
Just making sure the lights work.
I saw it.
This is pretty.
Oh, shoot. Never mind. I I'm so freaked out about the collector Leviathan that I just keep seeing it everywhere where it doesn't exist. It was literally just that.
Which is not going to do anything.
Um, that will.
I think it's actually in our better interest because I don't want to lose this.
I do not want to lose this thing.
Uh, I think it's probably in our better interest to go back, see what the what Noah wants.
Um, Okay then. See what Noah wants, cheat, and look up on the internet on how to get the last fragment so I can get my part.
And then go from there.
Seek caloric intake.
What the hell?
What banged into me?
Uh, I'm so jumpy.
I thought that was just [ __ ] That fish disappeared.
Okay then.
Huh.
Oof.
Oof.
Okay.
Well, this has been a stressful episode.
Whee!
All right, let's see what this Noetic Advisor wants from us.
And then I'm cheating.
What do you want?
We may have found patient zero.
Lead Salvor Suppuramond down at the bottom of a geothermal cave.
The oldest black box we've found so far.
Perhaps because it's too deep for anyone to retrieve.
But they tried, investigator.
There are nine other black boxes Seek fresh water intake.
I guess we can come back and listen to this.
We may have found patient zero.
Lead Salvor Suppuramond down at the bottom of a geothermal cave.
The oldest black box we've found so far.
Perhaps because [music] it's too deep for anyone to retrieve.
But they tried, investigator.
There are nine other black boxes down there.
Something went terribly wrong.
Partial voice data retrieved.
One more thing.
Zip's black box signal indicates she never re-printed. Code Z66.
Her download was rejected by the bio bed due to vital contamination.
She was reset to an earlier state.
Signal location uploaded to PDA. He also says proceed with utmost caution.
Now we're cooking.
Now we're cooking.
I'm intrigued.
Some some weird stuff's going on here.
My inventory is completely full.
Welcome aboard.
Why, thank you. I like Noah's voice. I just don't trust Noah.
Here's what I'm going to do.
I'm just going to throw all of this here and just let it sit.
It's fine.
Throw that in [music] there.
Do I have any fish?
No.
Fishy fishy fishy. Fish fish fish. Fishy fishy fishy. Fish fish fish.
Oh, fish fish fish fish.
Why are y'all moving so slow? Not you, though. This one This one got the memo.
That one got the memo.
Okay.
That's good.
I don't need any more of you, but you, yes.
Sorry.
Youtie seconds. Youtie seconds.
I love how I wanted to go to the tree just because it was cool and now everybody's like you can't go to this tree.
You can't go to this tree.
Or you'll die.
If you run away from everybody else, you make yourself easier for me to get.
I just got shocked.
Welcome aboard.
Gracias.
I feel like this episode has been like everywhere I go I see his face except it's the collector leviathan cuz I haven't seen it yet. So now I'm like it's been this many episodes or this many hours since I've been playing and I still haven't yet to see it.
Makes me very nervous.
All right, cheating time.
Cuz I don't I would have never found that. I genuinely would have never found that on my own.
I mean maybe eventually if I had ran into this wreck but I don't think I have yet.
How's everything looking everyone? Like today again like today I the quality has just been great.
I guess it just like clicked or something or my computer decided it wanted to start working cuz some of like it wasn't this clear when I was filming on some of the days like before this game released.
Okay.
So they said go around.
What does life give you? What does life give you?
Right here.
All right.
These hands are rated E for everyone.
And I have no battery for that.
I do have a battery that we can use for something.
And I also threw like four batteries at the bottom of the ocean, so.
It's over here.
There it is! [screaming] We've done it, everyone.
We've done it.
Don't need to scan the process. We've already got it.
Okay, I think 30 seconds. that is it for whatever the heck's in here.
Mostly because I don't want to die. Uh, it's not. There's something else in here, but now I'm kind of concerned that I'm not going to get out.
Shoot.
Oxygen.
WOAH!
WOAH!
THAT WAS CRAZY.
We dang near didn't make it.
Woah!
Oh!
Finally.
Shout out to that person that had the video already out. So, basic battery wiring kit, titanium ingot, sulfur. Wow, we already got everything, so that is incredibly perfect.
Yep.
I think we have everything we need to make the wiring kit.
So, this was successful.
Great success.
There we go.
So, we can charge this.
The game seems pretty solid. Like, it's been pretty nice. The only thing that like really has been a struggle was the moon pool.
You all haven't seen that um on Twitch. You will have already seen me struggle through it uh on the YouTube episodes, but they don't have like a regular-size moon pool anymore. You can make it whatever size you want, but it has to be a certain size to make all of the like tadpole attachments, and then tell you which size. So, then it gets really confusing and then you're like having to [music] play around and mess with it and that was a little bit frustrating. Um having a PDA PA pause is also quite frustrating.
And I I [music] do feel like things are harder to retrieve in this game, like items are much harder to come across and find.
And so I feel like it is taking me longer to to do things in this game than previously, like with me knowing how to do things, right? Um but those are kind of my only real complaints to be honest. Everything else great.
>> [music] >> It looks freaking great. I'm getting very intrigued by the story.
Dude.
You have [music] plenty. What are we doing?
Um I'm quite intrigued by the story.
It looks beautiful. I love the critters.
I don't know. That's kind of my thoughts.
And this this will certainly change over the next couple years cuz again this is early access, which is a smart idea to be able to see like what [music] works for people, what doesn't on such a large scale.
Um but yeah, so we need to make titanium ingot.
And then we can make [music] a repair tool.
So first we need to do this.
And then Oh, try not empty.
Whoops.
Oh.
Yeah, cuz I put a bunch of stuff there.
Yeah, before we play I I'm definitely going to play at least one more episode tonight, but before we do that I'm definitely taking this contact out. I don't know why it's so bad cuz it was fine on Monday when I wore it.
But it feels [music] like maybe I got an allergy in there.
My eyes are super sensitive.
I like how you look with contacts. And sometimes they work really well and sometimes they don't for me. But I used to wear they started me off with monthlies. Woo, bad idea for me because I have allergies. Um so we had to do dailies and that worked so much better.
The dual mode repair tool combines plasma arc welding and fabricator assist to handle bulk or precision repairs.
Though optimized for dry welds, it performs [music] exceptionally when wet.
I love this thing.
Oh, my beloved.
Also, I had a battery.
Oh, no, I didn't. Um I need to make another battery. [music] I feel like we're going to need a battery for something and I don't think that we have [music] the ingredients. We do not. We need copper and we need acidic thing.
Well, I know where to get them.
Inventory full.
Well, let me get a copper.
Also, I should clarify. I'm going to try to record at least one more episode today.
But don't worry, everyone.
We will be finishing this game to whatever end that looks like. I I don't know because it's an early access, so um it may not be finished.
So, we might get to all part and not finish it, but we'll have to see.
Cuz there are some people that have already finished.
>> Welcome aboard. But I am the slower player, and so that will not be happening.
All right, so I definitely need to replace the scanner battery.
Reload. So, unload.
Load. Fantastic. Phenomenal. Lovely.
>> I'm so I can't even like tell you all how tickled pink I am that it works so beautifully on my computer. This was a huge worry of mine. Um because I didn't know if I had the computer that would be able to handle this cuz I mean I have a good computer.
I got a beefy sucker um to be able to handle like Premiere Pro and R and um Photoshop and um whatever it is. Uh Lightroom.
I have a Dell XPS uh 16 that I got semi-recently cuz I had I actually had a gaming computer for years. I had a an ASUS Republic of Gaming computer but I was because it was recommended to me as a good computer that would be able to to handle Premiere Pro and Lightroom.
Um and it did. It worked for me for many years and then it did not.
Uh she was on her last leg.
She was suffering.
But she is laid to rest now and I got this one which made my life easier.
Because I was about to lose it because that computer was getting so slow.
30 seconds.
>> Um but I am very very happy that this one was able to do this cuz I got scared after what happened with the Uma Gari video where there was like this weird frame rate thing but part of it is I found it it was because of the way that I was filming because I couldn't see it in the game. I had no problems.
But it looked bad.
To everybody else.
But I figured out why it was.
It's because of how I had Streamlabs set up.
Because I don't normally play computers natively on my computer or play games natively on my computer.
And so um That's not the way I want to go.
And so [music] it wasn't able to process it properly.
Then once I figured out what settings [music] to have, this has worked.
So.
I also like did shut down close around the billions of tabs I had open on Google Chrome.
Now, I always make it remember them all and wake it back up after I'm done with the game.
But Welcome aboard.
How is the chat doing? Have you all been able to play yet, [music] Twitch chat?
And then if you're on YouTube, let me know how your play through is going. I definitely want to know. Just don't spoil anything for me.
All right, another battery and then we should be set.
No.
I had it.
I had it.
Cuz I Oops.
Cuz I haven't made I keep refusing to make another one of these [music] because I am going to take all of this down um and reset everything up and so it's already going to be [music] a pain.
So if I add even more stuff it's going to be much worse.
Nope.
>> [screaming] [laughter] >> I hate fallen malicious sponge.
Assessing PDA neutrophil neural temperature, reducing output subjectivity.
So fun.
Okay, hold on.
That's crazy.
Sponge of dying mist, a dangerous semi-predatory sponge that acts as a central node in a necrobiome. Bacteria arsenal, sponges cultivate bacteria which secrete helpful chemicals. At some point in its history, the toxic excuse me sponge was infected by a bacterial symbiote which generated a powerful antibiotic akin to human streptomyces. The bacterium uses antibiotic to extinguish competition then began an internal power structure to evolve compounds that could destroy rival strains of its own species. Oh my god.
The result is a sponge flushed with antibiotics so concentrated it causes skin burns and nerve damage. Touch-based hunting strategy, when brushed sponge contains sharply uh contracts sharply expelling a cloud of antibiotic toxin.
Microorganisms are killed and larger species may enter convulsions and die nearby. Okay. The dead matter decompose releasing nutrients upon which the sponge feeds. Oh my god.
Animal gene fragments the toxic sponges genetic code contains fragments of an animal genome likely a crustacean.
Okay. Assessment avoid. Keep medical supplies on hand to treat chemical burns and nerve damage. That's wild.
I It's a sponge that's a crustacean which hurts me in my feelings, but okay.
I love that one.
It does seem to be like triggered by movement.
Bye little fish.
I'm always I wanted you to bang into it.
Come on. Do the roar.
It's kind of a shame.
I wanted him to see that.
I guess it got shy. It had an audience and it was like never mind.
30 seconds. 30 seconds.
Okay, one more battery. Dang it.
All right.
We'll make one more battery.
And then we can go back and assess.
[music] >> Welcome aboard.
One more battery.
This will probably need it for like the flashlight or something. [music] Okay.
Now.
Fix the tadpole.
Cuz she needs it. I love that I have the one window here.
But I will have more.
Hello, beautiful.
Soon, everything will be better. Don't worry, sweetie.
Welcome aboard, Captain. Why, thank you.
Now, let's go back.
Investigate tadpole parents.
Black box zip.
Whew.
Yeah, so you can't go to the tree without having to go past the scary big boys.
But I hate it. But I do want to scan them. I I would scan it if it was a possibility. I just don't think it is.
I also don't like that four of them show up.
I'd argue that they're also scarier than the other void leviathans, specifically because I can't really get a good look at them.
Um Hi. Oh, okay. Goodbye.
It's also interesting to me. Oh, there she is. Usually in these games I'll have like versions that live in like different places, like heat versions of like a half moose or whatever, but they don't have that yet, at least.
Okay.
150, so like it's somewhere down in there is where Zip it.
What's in there?
Nope, wrong button.
Nothing. Okay, well.
I don't know what you're doing right up above me, buddy.
Okay, you're weird.
You're a weird fellow.
So, the key is going to be figuring out how to get down there.
Again, great music, really calming for a horrifying place.
We've got a monitor.
Oh, yeah, there's a whole village here.
We have to monitor our depths very closely here cuz we could probably very easily get to the crush depth by accident.
Tailings Village the structure is not of human origin is apparently a dwelling lightweight skeleton built from organic plastic structures [music] similar to PVC covering of glued fish leather electroformed hatch salvaged from the larger manufactured [music] structure occupants significantly larger than human.
That seems to be a trend though with like everything in Subnautica like most of the critters are bigger than people including Alan's people but granted they [music] built themselves their bodies so if they kind of don't count but still.
Portable shelter for a water dwelling organism the tool marks and relatively [music] crude construction suggests limited survival skills short perhaps a post disaster culture leather making and gluing imply the presence of a skilled or semi-skilled Artisans caution there has been no publicly acknowledged.
There has been no publicly acknowledged first contact with the tool using alien culture since the discovery of the ruins in 45 46 B first contact on 45 46 B led to the death of all but one member of the Aurora crew.
Riley us first contact with space born Cara organisms led to the death of thousands of Mongolian colonists. First contact is dangerous. First contact may have consequences for the entire human species. Proceed with absolute caution.
I've said it before and I'll say it again. I love stories with aliens.
I'm meeting some aliens. Dang it.
Um Interesting they don't acknowledge anything about what happened with Robin.
They may not know.
Seek fresh water intake.
I would love to meet another alien species. That would be fun.
That would be fun.
I'm very intrigued.
Y'all have roped me in.
I mean I was already roped in but now I'm like very very roped in. I'm I'm very [music] excited.
As I've mentioned many times, this is my kind of stuff.
Green biology and I get to meet aliens.
Heck yeah.
30 seconds. All aboard, captain.
>> Taller tailing chest.
None of those.
There's a little colonies in a first contact scenario face two terrifying possibilities.
That they are alone or that they are searching for Or that they are not.
Whatever you are, don't don't.
Where is everything about those colonials?
Well, I scanned the things in there, but I don't see them. Maybe it's saying that we can now make them, which I would feel weird about cuz that would uh Am I crazy or did that just move?
Uh making these would make me feel like I was culturally appropriating.
Shoot.
Where the captain >> Stop. Start paying attention.
Um, what the freak?
30 seconds.
That's the first time one has like grabbed me.
And like taken me like that. Oh my god.
That was scary.
In the dark, too. God.
That was scary.
I hear it again.
30 seconds. Listen you freaker.
Captain.
This guy.
Oh, that's the Okay, so those are like a little guard dudes that we saw in the concept art.
Oop, there's stuff down here.
There's stuff down here, baby.
Nah.
Got over here.
Nine survivors of habitat.
Everyone sound off.
We are going down into the hot cave.
We'll rally at the base camp and sink with the biobed. Then we search for Zikz Korotaia Key.
As deep as we can go.
If we feel anything down there, we'll check it out.
Calmly.
Maybe Unit is right.
Maybe the planet will tell us where to go next. One way or another, we are all going to live.
Even you, Ara.
I'm coming back for you.
Put the fear of god in me again.
They don't I just killed one of them.
A tadpole fragment. There's a freaking repair tool.
So, if we had come further over here, we'd have been fine.
Granted, I probably would have gotten attacked, so I probably would not have actually been fine.
Um What's that?
Oh my god, I'm going to fight you.
I mean, I don't like the lights.
Oh, lithium.
Don't you dare.
Oh, I didn't realize that I just Okay, wow. Um I forgot that I was playing live.
>> [laughter] >> Forgot I was playing live.
I have I know that we need lithium.
Oh, also.
All right.
Mhm.
Lithium is useful in manufacturing portable high-yield power sources.
We better get it now. 10 seconds. On board, captain.
That's all we got?
That's it?
Really?
I'm blowing that up. You only get two?
That's ridiculous.
>> Well, in that case Every where I go I see his face.
Wow, that's beautiful.
30 seconds All aboard, captain. Why, thank you.
That's quite a bit of lithium in here.
And there's a lot of their structures.
How did I get in?
Came from there. Wow, look at Look at that.
Seek fresh water intake. That's beautiful.
Um Oh, thank god.
I was I was scared. I was like, I don't have any and I don't know if there are any of those little guys around, but there are.
[music] What happens?
Nothing.
Seek caloric intake.
30 seconds Is that a fire worm?
All aboard, captain.
Someone said a fire worm.
How cute.
There's a little guard.
30 seconds.
Look at this lighting.
Now we all know that I'm a sucker for good lighting.
This is known ocean philly lore.
Boring old captain.
Not the ideal meal, but it is better than nothing.
Hm.
Oh, gold. Victory.
Gold is a conductive corrosion resistant feedstock for advanced electronics.
Culturally relevant motivational fact.
A Mongolian free state's to conspiracy from ninja miners. Historical gold seekers, this green pants resembled cartoon turtles.
What?
Oh, so we're close to that. Hi, fish.
Bye, fish.
Okay, now we can clearly see all of these.
And the marrow brain, I think, is directly over top of us.
But I don't It doesn't seem to want to attack this vehicle, which is interesting.
That's a big hole.
I'm sure the YouTube comments are going to mention that.
I didn't do it on purpose. I was simply stating facts. You all take it in the wrong ways.
Heat warning.
I see.
But I don't see zip.
Zip's over this way.
Even farther down. We've got to really watch our depths cuz we're getting mighty close.
Zip is right over there.
Ooh.
Wow.
Very pretty. We're at 215.
>> Caution.
Monitoring 10 colonist black boxes in the cave below.
This is a high mortality work site.
Great.
The black box is right [music] here.
All right, so we're kind of halfway where Well, where where is the black box?
Where'd it go?
It's right there.
Get out, swim.
Am I nuts?
Am I losing it? Or did the black box disappear?
That black box moved.
This is about as far as we're going to get with this.
Oh, [ __ ] Well, now I got to find something and very quickly.
Ew.
You'll have to You'll have to do.
Hello. You're shh Where'd it go? Freak.
Okay.
30 seconds.
Captain.
Where?
Really great [music] music in here, too.
All right, where's Zip's black box?
It's over here.
I'm going to take this to the very edge of where it can go.
Find nuts.
Or does it keep moving?
We are Gate danger.
I know.
Ophelia moved and it scared me. That's about where I'm at.
It's It's right around here, then.
I'll just get out.
I I think it's moving. I think it's just like in a weird spot.
Stag.
That's probably one of my bigger jump scares and it was over nothing.
30 seconds.
I am the captain.
See?
Have to be very careful right here.
There it is. I found it.
I will fight you, little thing.
Can I even take that?
The roots are like hard lines.
I have to fix the hard lines.
Ow.
It's so warm.
30 seconds. A whole other place down there that we can't access yet.
This is the place. We should live down here. I'll convince you all. How? Why?
The jelly rings are full of sap. They taste like fermented caramel. Dr. Wu, the vent organisms are primary producers. No light needed to grow them.
Nutritionist, sustain thyself. Sean, the rock borers fractures go down into volcanic bedrock. Don't you want to see how far?
Eso, if you and your minions are so tough, you should try living in boiling water. Mantis, boss, you wanted a safer place to park the bio beds. Right here.
And it's got free geothermal power.
Sophie, you're afraid we'll provoke the tailings? I've been visiting for weeks and they'll never come down here.
They're afraid of it.
Nichevo.
Oh girl, you'd hate this place cuz it means you're wrong. This world is fit for humans. We can thrive here. Come down and see. I can hear the whole planet.
Okay.
Also, I want to meet the tailings.
Let me at them. I want to see them.
And probably all of you are going to say wood in my comments, which is exactly what happened when Alan got his body.
I'm just stating the facts of what happened last time.
Starvation.
What did we do in that?
Hello, sweet child. No.
>> [snorts] >> Please, I need you. I'm starving. I must eat the raw fish. Sushi.
The freshest sushi ever.
40 seconds. The freshest of fresh sushi.
Incredibly fresh.
Fresh, fresh, fresh.
Fresh, fresh, fresh, fresh, fresh.
>> Oxygen.
Fresh, fresh, fresh, fresh, fresh.
Okay.
Now, we have to get out of here.
As gently and as smoothly as possible.
Done. I don't hit as many things in this vehicle.
I think because it's smaller.
We've only hit one fish.
Well, I'm scanning that.
Okay, anyway.
Where's my Oh my god. This is the most I've ever jumped.
We already got her black box.
What do you mean?
We already got her black box, I thought.
I thought we got it.
I don't know.
>> [sighs] >> Heat warning. Mhm.
I love this trying to attack the tadpole while I'm actively not in it.
>> Heat warning.
All right, all captain.
Stop banging into my gosh.
Okay. Heat warning.
Another life pod.
Mhm.
I could have sworn that we got zips.
Dang, but we may not have. We might have to go down deeper.
We'll go check.
If not, that means that um we'll need to make the chases.
I just think my compass go No, it's a depth module.
I just need a depth module.
P code required.
Under extreme circumstances, your your scanner can rip access codes from the black boxes of high-ranking colonists.
Could have sworn that we got that.
>> 70 seconds.
Did we not get it?
Wait, down here would be a depth This is just to help it like turn and do stuff better.
We need a depth module. I don't know where that would be.
I don't know.
I don't know.
I wonder if we scan these.
Somebody just tried to bite me.
Yep.
Those darn gars.
30 seconds.
And then because this thing is black, it's like impossible to see it.
Okay.
Same one.
Warning.
Seek fresh water intake.
Good job, Brooke.
>> intake.
Ah!
Couple fire.
30 seconds.
All right.
We're going to need to figure out how to get a depth module.
I think that's the only way.
So, we're going to freak you. We're going to go back home.
Um and call it quits for this episode. Give me a little break. I'm going to take out my contacts.
This must have been where I died, but I don't have any space.
This is the thing that scared me earlier.
Filled with sulfur, so good for us to remember that.
I'm Where am I going? I'm just going.
Somebody just banged into me.
Mhm.
Maybe I banged into that. Nope. I see what it was. It just didn't make any sense. Ah, it's you.
The chat was like, "Someone is trying to bite me." It was hard to tell if you meant the game or a nearby pet, cuz it could have been either.
Although my pets aren't really biters.
Although they play bite sometimes.
Okay.
Well, that was an exciting episode. I jumped perhaps more than I ever have in a Subnautica game for some reason.
So, there's that.
Oh, yeah. No, we don't. Never mind. I thought we had a noa alert. We don't.
Yeah, so I just got to figure out where a depth module is.
Cuz I think we're going to need Okay, we're going to need that.
All right.
Park that bad boy.
Warning, primary offline. Of course it is.
Welcome aboard.
This thing sucks. We're going to need two.
My bioreactor, this is it's not doing it for me.
It is not doing it for me.
Dehydration.
Uh-huh.
Well, let's take care of these issues first before we die.
Inventory is full.
Welcome aboard. I'm going to straight up die.
Well, if I die, it'll leave everything in here in a little thing, which is storage.
So, I think we should do it.
20 seconds.
Which sounds ridiculous.
But then it will leave it in an ice box in here for me as storage, and then I don't have to worry about it. Because this is too much stuff. Because I don't want to have to like move all of those things.
So, I'm just going to let myself die.
Which sounds a little bit ridiculous.
Oh, I have no space.
>> Oxygen.
I might have to suck it up, though, and put a fourth one.
And just figure it out.
There we go.
Print host specification.
Reprinting.
See? Watch.
Watch.
Welcome aboard. Perfect, see?
Look at that.
And Oh, well, let me put anything in there.
But, yeah. So, it's great. I'm just going to leave it there.
It worked, okay?
It worked.
Welcome aboard.
Whatever works.
Power connected. All systems online.
Whatever works.
Oh, I thought I had it.
There we go.
That was powered. Welcome aboard.
Okay.
There we go.
I'm going to take these contacts out. I can't do it anymore. Um, I was hoping to be able to wear them, but uh, I think my allergies must be bad or something.
So, got to go take these out.
Hope you enjoyed it while it lasted. Uh, and I will see you [music] all in the next episode.
We got to find a depth module. We got to go down there. I got to see what's going on. I got to see why all these people are dying down there and what's going on.
All right.
Bye.
It's bye for the YouTube video, not bye for the rest of you cuz I have to save and exit and then I can actively go. I will be coming back.
Next episode of 14 minutes, probably honestly. Um so Might be a little bit later cuz I might wait until it's time to feed Ophelia so that way she won't bother me.
Not that she's allowed to bother me, but you get what I mean. Um okay, well, I'm going to go do all that. I will see you all very, very soon. And that way too, I like I've been pausing too so that way I can um load all the videos into my hard drive and make sure that everything's set up.
So, okay. All right. Woo, y'all didn't tell me I had a whole chunk of hair that was looking odd. Anyway, I hope you all enjoyed it.
I'll see you all.
Goodbye.
