The hybridization of any molecule or ion can be determined using the formula: number of hybrid orbitals = (V + M - C + A) / 2, where V is the number of valence electrons (equal to the group number), M is the number of monovalent atoms (hydrogens and halogens), C is the cation charge (use negative value), and A is the anion charge (use positive value); the resulting number corresponds to sp (2), sp² (3), sp³ (4), sp³d (5), sp³d² (6), or sp³d³ (7) hybridization.
