Global disease surveillance involves tracking multiple pathogens simultaneously through various monitoring systems, including case reports, wastewater analysis, and respiratory disease dashboards. The video demonstrates how health authorities monitor outbreaks like Ebola, measles, and respiratory viruses (RSV, influenza) across different regions, with case numbers fluctuating based on testing capacity and seasonal patterns. Wastewater surveillance provides early warning of disease trends before clinical cases are reported, while Google Trends data reveals public interest patterns that may not always correlate with actual disease severity.

The Latest On Ebola And Virus Levels Around The World!!Hinzugefügt:
What's going on everyone? Happy Saturday and welcome back to my channel. Welcome to another edition of the virus update for Saturday, May 30th, 2026. It's been several days since we have done a video, which means hey, I do have a lot of things to share with you today. Want to be updated on the news? Want to be updated on the data? Some more news, some state dashboards, and some wastewater. Stick around. If you're new here, consider subscribing down below.
Give this video a thumbs up if you like it. Hit that notification bell. Share this video with anyone you know, and of course, leave your comments down below.
Alrighty, as stated, we do have a lot of things to get through today. Starting off with the ongoing Ebola outbreak, which does continue to spread at this time, and in fact, Uganda has now closed its border with Congo due to the outbreak. Now, when we come to cases, gets a little confusing here, and allow me to explain. BNO is reporting 1,262 new cases on the most recent update from them 15 hours ago, which is up by 224, but I do want to stress some of those cases are suspected cases, and because of that, we may see that number change.
Yes, there's going to be more suspected cases. Yes, the number's going to go up, but listen to this. In Congo, testing capabilities are being ramped up with 100 cases being confirmed yesterday. So, a lot of those cases were suspected cases of the total of 225.
Authorities believe this testing will reduce the number of suspected cases as some may be suffering from other illnesses. The death toll was not updated yesterday, and the most recent number of deaths shows that there have been this outbreak is still ongoing.
It's going to continue to go upward, but if they ramp up testing, we may see a slowing in the number of new cases because other illnesses will start being ruled out and there'll be less suspected cases. So, we'll have to see what happens.
Our next video will be probably Wednesday or I don't know. We'll see.
We'll have to watch and see what happens. All right, continuing on here with Ebola. Ebola cases near 1,000. This was published on May 27th as the world scrambles to contain outbreak. Yeah, there are a lot of concerns. We still have not seen any cases outside of Africa. I'm hopeful that's going to continue. The World Cup is coming up soon. I'm curious to see if any type of restrictions or anything any safety protocols will go in for that. We'll have to see. The United States, and this is not World Cup related, the United States has been ramping up the number of airports that are screening for Ebola.
JFK, Houston, I believe Atlanta's in there now. I also believe Chicago. Could Miami be one of them? I think so.
There's a lot of different uh airports now that are ramped up and so far I have not heard any reports of these airports coming up with a case of Ebola. So, that is some good news. All right, moving on now to this. I thought we would take a look at Google Trends to see what's going on with the trends.
Now, if you look at the last, I believe this is set for the past 5 years. Let's make this full screen so you can see the chart better. Yeah, Ebola in the news is the highest it's been in the last 5 years. But, let's take this out to 2004 to present.
Oh, look at that. There's like right now.
Look back at the big outbreak in 2014 to 15 and 16.
The trend was actually much higher for search interest back then. Now, if we added hantavirus to the mix, I'm not going to do that, but if we did, hantavirus, you know, hantavirus, the most recent outbreak of that, WHICH IS NOT OUT OF THE WOODS YET. There have been actually a couple more cases linked a few more cases linked to the ship, but uh that actually got a lot more search interest than Ebola did. And you know what? I will add that in there. A N T A Let's add that in there and I'll show you.
How that looks. Is it going to allow us?
And we actually have to Yeah, look at that.
And let's actually zoom this in so you can see it better. We'll set this for 5 years and you can see that. Yeah, the hantavirus outbreak got a lot more attention than Ebola did, which is rather interesting because the Ebola outbreak has infected way more people and it has been far deadlier. So, I thought that was rather interesting. All righty, moving on. We do have a bunch of things from Dennis the COVID info. Yeah, all the things we would normally do when we were doing these videos daily and I do want to continue with the theme of as many places as possible to keep you informed as to what's going on, but there's some good news and there's some bad news within the data you're about to see. First off, yeah, a little bit of bad news. New Zealand weekly COVID update up to May 24th. This is May 18th to the 24th. New cases of uh COVID 206.
That's up by 11.9% for uh New Zealand. Deaths have been removed from dashboard. I don't know what that means. Uh hospitalizations 26.
That's down by 3.7%. Moving on now to our tour of Australia. Tasmania respiratory update up to May 24th. So, uh the data is from May 11th to May 24th. The positivity rate it did go up 2.8% and up by 1.5%. COVID cases 27.
That's not a lot, but that actually does work out to be an up by 170%. Influenza A eight cases. Okay, it's up by 166.6%.
Again, it's only eight cases. Influenza B zero. RSV 53 cases. That's up by 8.1%.
RSV is the leading respiratory disease in that area and I have to remind you they are about to enter winter in New Zealand and Australia. Western Australia, now we come to a little bit of good news here. Uh Western Australia, the COVID positivity rate up to May 24th was 2.6%.
Reported cases 125 were down by 11.3%.
Hospitalizations 58 were down by 4.9%.
No one in the ICU at this time. And when we take a look at influenza, 77 cases, that's down by 18.9%. But again, we do see the RSV level has gone up 171 cases were up by 11.7%.
All right, taking a look at South Australia now. And this gets a little interesting. The data is from May 23rd to the 29th. COVID, 131 cases. Yeah, that's up by 14.9%.
Flu, 34 cases. Yeah, that's also up by 17.2%. RSV, up big time. 137 cases.
That's actually up by 42.7%.
Pertussis, 23 cases or down by 25.8%. So good to see whooping cough dropping. Uh COVID deaths, yeah, there were four more. So that's up to 12 now. Six for flu. RSV actually had five deaths. And I think it's interesting that they keep a track of RSV deaths there. We don't really It says actually there's a under sign. So it's five or less. Uh I think that's interesting. Why do I think that's interesting?
The majority of states here in the United States, when you go to the respiratory dashboards, I do not see a listing for number of RSV deaths. I wish there would be. You're going to see in Pennsylvania the number of uh deaths we've had, but you won't see RSV listed.
I don't see the CDC list as well. Maybe I'm just not seeing it. Maybe it's somewhere and I don't know about it. All right, Victorian weekly respiratory surveillance report up to May 29th. This is from May 17th to the 23rd. COVID positivity rate 2.7% down by a measly 0.1% COVID cases, 340 or up by 8% influenza A, 139 cases or up by 8% influenza B, 32 up by 88% but look at this RSV, 699 cases or up by 24% Yeah, there's clearly a problem with RSV in Australia and finally we come to New South Wales where the COVID positivity rate as of a week ending May 23rd is 4.2% number of laboratories reporting COVID one out of four COVID cases 1,174 or up by 7.5% influenza 523 cases or up by 20.2% RSV 2,184 cases or up by 20.3% Wow, that's a ton of RSV cases. So the RSV problem there it is real and BQ.1.1.8.1 is the leading variant in this area for COVID at 58% of the cases at this time and we do see two regions have dropped when it comes to wastewater and two regions did go up and one more stop for Australia Queensland weekly respiratory surveillance report. This data is up to May 25th COVID 243 cases down by 6.1% influenza 123 cases or down by 6.8% RSV 686 cases up by 11.5% hospitalizations 21 when it comes to COVID that's down by 41.6% influenza four down by 42.8% RSV 58 that's up by 34.8% at this time. Now we move over to the UK but before we do that we got to thank Dennis the COVID info guy for posting all that data on social media. Thank you so much for doing that. I'm glad I can share it here on the channel. All right, in the UK COVID cases didn't drop this week, they went up just ever so slightly. They went up by 8 to 174 or 4.8% and remember, I'm not going to reach over and grab it. You've seen it a million times. At-home testing is a real thing, so the cases are likely to be higher and plus people who just don't test at all. 11 deaths reported this week, that's down by eight. Healthcare usage is 165 if that's up to date and the COVID positivity rate is showing 1% at this time. We do see that mpox does look like there was back leading up to April a little bit of an increase in mpox cases and then that dropped and taking a look at what's going on with measles, yeah, they're still elevated and having cases cases of measles at this time. All right, want to read a headline of a study to you.
Multi-hospital study reveals long COVID burden is twice as high as current estimates.
I would agree with that and in this case, there were more than 460,000 COVID-19 patients who were studied in this, so this is pretty big. I think this is a legitimate It is published in the JAMA Network Open, uh which that usually is very legitimate source, so yeah, long COVID, we've heard about it before. We've heard stuff like this before where people say, you know, it's probably a lot worse than we know about. Well, you know what?
There's just so many people out there that don't like a problem that they may have a new health issue back to a case of COVID. There's so many people who say, "Oh, why am I having vertigo now?
Why am I having this motion sickness?
Why am I having constant coughing issues? Where are these headaches coming from? Why am I always tired?"
Have you had a case of COVID?
It's possible that could be where it's come from. It's not a guarantee, but it is possible that's where it has come from. All right, whooping cough, we're going to California now. Yes, we're coming to the United States. We've been called off on campus. 17 cases across three schools reported so far in 2026.
This is in Pasadena. Uh we've been talking about this before, and now it's up to 17 cases. So, I thought I would update you on those cases. And now, I also thought I would update you on what's going on when it comes to measles. And we got a problem here.
Before we read the number of the problem, I want you to see something.
This is Virginia's measles dashboard.
Read what it says. Updated Tuesdays and Thursdays around noon. Date last updated on May 20th. Why is that a problem?
It's great that they're going to keep us informed. It's a problem because, well, they now have to do twice a week update.
Yeah, I believe it used to be one. This is still a fairly new dashboard. Just started like a couple weeks ago. It was going to be once a week is what I thought I saw. Now, it's twice a week.
Why are they switching to twice a week?
The number of cases is going upward, and it's now up to 64. So, when cases are increasing more, they have to increase the frequency of their updates. Number of people hospitalized is 11% at this time. And uh you can see here. Here's the increase in cases. And if we go back to May 16th, they did have 22. And I think some of this data fills in because they will get more uh testing results back from people who are testing positive. It's not just uh Virginia that's going up. Cases of measles continue to go up in my state of Pennsylvania as well. Lancaster and Lebanon counties are seeing an outbreak right now that is growing, and it looks to be mainly school-age children here in Pennsylvania. We've had random other cases throughout the year in Pennsylvania as well, but that's the area that's most concerning at the moment. The United States is nearing 2,000 measles cases. I think we're going to pass it next week. Uh currently, we are at 1,983.
Let's go over to the measles dashboard real quickly. Yeah, there's Pennsylvania. We're now up to 38 cases.
Virginia on here is listed at 63 cases.
Ohio 11 cases. Texas 182. Florida's now at 139. Georgia five cases. How about Michigan? 13 cases. 45 in the state of Washington. Oregon 23. California 47.
Utah 484. Arizona 84. New Mexico 16. Uh Colorado 22. Kansas just one case.
Nebraska one case. South Dakota eight cases. Look at that. North Dakota 38 cases. That still gets me every time I see that because there's such a not populated state. Minnesota 17 cases.
Some other data that came in this week.
Taking a look at the epidemic status for COVID, it's likely growing now in Texas.
And for whatever reason in Connecticut, subject to change next week because look where we were last week. It changed from last week and we don't see Florida growing anymore. Florida's now not estimated. We don't know what's happening in Florida. We don't know what's happening in Georgia. So interesting to see that. This my friends, now what I have to show you is really interesting. So I have this chart of COVID in wastewater really zoomed out. Take a look at this. You can see where we were when they started this page back in 2020.
4 and then 2025. I mean, yeah, very high and matter of fact, the West Coast region actually at that point went off the charts. They literally went off the charts. Look, there's a line here and it went above that line. Now we fast forward to uh what's going on in 2026.
Look how low the levels are. These are some of the lowest levels since this wastewater dashboard was created. That my friends is really impressive. Let's see what's going on with RSV and hopefully we see nothing but good news for RSV. We'll see. I don't think I looked at RSV before. Yeah, RSV is now dropping back down once again. So finally, I think we are slowly being able to say, "Hey, we can put RSV to sleep for the season." There'll still be a few cases here and there. I think finally we're getting close to that point where we can say RSV is not a rampant issue in the United States during the summer months, once again, like it's supposed to behave. Good news there. All right, taking a look at what's going on with our friends up in Canada, and we do see COVID-19 activity is low, flu A is low, flu B is moderate, and RSV is listed at low at this time.
All right, let's go over to some of those uh dashboards, shall we? First off, we're going to go over to what's going on with COVID in Orange County, Florida, and we do see that Eastern Orange County and Northwest Orange County rising for COVID at this time.
And then there was a mysterious drop down to nothing for uh the other two regions, which I'm not fully understanding it. Still elevated when it comes to norovirus, especially in Southwest. Yeah, Disney, that's I believe that's in that area. And then we do see Eastern Orange County still elevated. Then we do see, though not as high, South Orange and Northwest Orange going up ever so slightly at this time.
So, that's something we will keep our eyes on. How about what's going on in my city of Philadelphia recently? Cuz I have some good news here. Remember we saw the COVID positivity rate last week go up by 0.9%? Well, now it went right back down by 0.9%. So, that is good news, and hospitalizations in my city, just one person hospitalized for COVID at this time. Just one unlucky person dealing with COVID. I think that's quite remarkable to get down to that low.
Where do we want to go next? Uh let's take a look at the Pennsylvania deaths, shall we? For flu this season, 531, 569 COVID-19 related deaths. Let's see what's going on in New York State. And look at this, good news here. Just only 63 cases reported on Friday. I'm going to refresh that. That may have been Thursday. That was Thursday. Still good news here. They are continuing to trend even lower. So, 130 cases on Friday.
Taking a look at what's going on, let's see, where do we want to go next? Let's go to the state of Ohio and we'll see what's going on there. I don't know if this updated. You notice it said 5-21.
No, this did not update. So, uh don't have any more recent numbers.
If you go back a prior week, it was 49 RSV hospitalizations, 12 for flu, 27 for COVID-19. How about Colorado? What's going on there? Now, here gets a little interesting. RSV, you note that the positivity rate 1.94%. Yeah, that's almost near 2%. That actually went up by 0.66%.
I think that's going to go back down next week. I don't know. May- maybe they're going to see a localized thing go on there with RSV. I don't know.
Influenza 2.20% or down by 0.79.
COVID-19, the positivity rate is closer to 1% again, 0.92%.
We would expect to see this slowly go up. It's getting to be that time of year. These levels have been so low for so long in so many places, they can't stay low forever. I want to show you this in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. We're taking a look at wastewater now. And wastewater's going to be where we end the video.
And why are we taking a look at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania? Because the GI-like illnesses in the United States, they are very much so still a thing.
Norovirus is still high here and it's actually gone higher. Rotavirus, now I don't know if this is complete or incomplete data, but that's trended upward a little bit then after it was going down. Nonetheless, that is still high and let's set this up on the nationwide level. We're going to take a look at norovirus and rotavirus. And norovirus is still medium in all regions. It's still saying high over here and I want to look at something.
Yeah, there's still 33 high sites, 43 medium sites, and 19 low sites. Then when we go to rotavirus, there are still 70 high sites at this time.
Yeah, that is still very much so still a problem. Let's go to Sacramento, California and see what the GI like illnesses are doing there. We I can see everything else there for the most part is fine. Still dealing with an influenza B problem. Although, look at it's you know, it's saying hi. That value, that number of pathogens, that really isn't all that high. Now, whoa.
Yeah, noroviruses. Yeah, it's shooting back upward again. Rotavirus has also done the same. Okay, not as high as we just saw in Pennsylvania. Nevertheless, it's still an issue there. Hmm, not good. Let's go to the Pacific Northwest.
Now, they only have one waste well, we see data not available here, not calculated. Well, we can see what the charts show. We see HMPV is a problem there.
Yeah, norovirus has gone upward. Rotavirus Yeah, it's not even being calculated, so not a very good example. We only have one wastewater site in Washington on this page.
West Boise, Idaho. You know, I wish the CDC had a wastewater page for norovirus and these other viruses. Here's West Boise, Idaho and let's see what's going on there. Yeah, norovirus still going upward there. Rotavirus is high. And I should mention, back in California, there was that trail that's dealing with a norovirus outbreak. There's more news stories circulating about that once again, so it is still problematic.
And I do wonder Let's do something here. This is kind of unscripted. I was not planning to do this whatsoever. What would happen if we type in norovirus?
In Google Trends. I wonder in the past year. Yeah, look at that. Search engine it's starting to go up slightly. It's nowhere near as high as 2025, but it is starting to go up slightly. So, there is definitely um something going on when it comes to norovirus. Let's go back to wastewater.
Let's go to Michigan and see what's going on. How about Warren, Michigan? And COVID's fine.
Again, the respiratory viruses are really doing well in the United States right now. The GI illnesses, not so much. Uh There it is, norovirus is meaning it has come down and rotavirus has come down there. Let's go to somewhere in the south now and that's where we will end you for today. How about Atlanta metro area? And let's go to Big Creek, Roswell. That's just north of Atlanta. HMPV still a little bit of problem.
Norovirus is still high at this time and rotavirus is still high and you know, I just said a little bit ago the respiratory viruses are not bad. Please keep in mind, yes norovirus spreads on surfaces. You can also inhale. Yeah, it can also be something you should probably also be mad. You should be masking anyhow because viruses are always going to be out there. Even when they're low, it only takes one person to make you sick. That's all. You come in contact with one sick person and you're going to have a problem. All righty folks, that does it for today's virus update. The next virus update I believe is going to be Wednesday. That's going to be our schedule for now.
Wednesdays and Saturdays. If something big pops up, I'll do a short in between or I just want to have a brief discussion about something, we'll pop in with a YouTube short. If we're going to do that, maybe on Monday we'll pop in with something. I don't know.
I will see you guys all again next time.
Until I see you again next time, give this video a thumbs up if you like what you see here. If you like the new frequency, do I seem happier? I think I seem happy. I think I seem less stressed out. I look more wide awake, don't I?
Well, if you like what you're seeing here, subscribe down below. If you enjoyed today's video, give it a thumbs up. Hit that notification bell. Share this video with anyone you know. Help keep more people informed and of course, leave your comments down below. Give me feedback. Do you like the way we just did today's video? Uh, do you want me to make any changes or anything? And there is one change I'm going to be doing in the future. It's not going to be today's video cuz I have to be somewhere later on, but uh, I am going to probably start since we're we're spacing these videos out more now and I'm going to have more time. I probably am going to start doing what they call I think it's called chapters.
We're going to start putting chapters.
Like for example, we did Australia today. That'll be a chapter. If someone doesn't want to see what's going on Australia, he'll just click to the next chapter and it'll show you it'll take you to the another part of the video, something that you are interested in seeing. All righty, folks. I will see you all again next time. Again, until I see you then, stay safe, have a fantastic weekend. Thanks for watching.
