This recently declassified NASA Gemini 7 mission audio recording from December 5, 1965, reveals that astronauts Frank Borman and Jim Lovell observed approximately 100 million small particles at a distance of 3-4 miles while in polar orbit, in addition to the booster and a bogey (unidentified object) at 10:00 high, demonstrating that space debris was a significant concern during early space missions.

RECENTLY DECL ASSIFIED NASA GEMINI 7 AUDIO WAS SEALED FOR 61 YEARSHinzugefügt:
Gemini 7, do you read 98?
Read and clear. 7, go ahead.
I have a bogie at 10:00 high.
This is Houston. Say again, 7.
I have a bogie at 10:00 high.
Roger.
Gemini 7, is that the booster or is that an actual sighting?
I would Say again, 7.
It would appear to be an actual sighting.
It's very bright.
Uh do you have any more information, uh estimated distance or size?
We also have the booster in sight.
Understand you also have the booster in sight, roger.
And we have very very many uh It looks like a hundred million uh particles going by on the left out about 3 to 4 miles.
Understand you have many small particles going by on the left. At what distance?
Roger, I understand they're about 3 to 4 miles away.
They're past my window. They're going in a polar orbit.
Roger, I understand they're about 3 to 4 miles away.
They're in a polar orbit.
Roger.
Gemini 7, Houston. Were these particles in addition to the booster and the the uh bogie at 10:00 high?
Affirmative.
Roger.
Uh 7, this is uh Houston, this is 7.
Go ahead.
I have the booster on my side as a brilliant body in the sun against the back uh black background. There appears to be particles around it.
Roger, what direction is it from you?
It's about at my 2:00 position.
Does that mean it's ahead of you?
It's probably the booster.
Roger.
Gemini control here again. The reference in that conversation to the third unidentified object, of course, uh was or the third object was a bogey.
There were several references to the bogey. This is the unidentified object in addition to particles which appear to be headed in a polar orbit. You heard Frank Borman say.
Plus Jim Lovell discussing the the booster. It was Borman who reported sighting the bogey.
Uh this is Gemini control, Houston, at 4 hours 24 minutes into the flight.
