In elite badminton, mental fortitude and consistency are crucial factors that can determine match outcomes, as demonstrated when Alex Lanier (FRA) defeated the third-seeded Anders Antonsen (DEN) 21-14, 21-16, 21-16 in the Singapore Open 2026 quarterfinals. Despite Antonsen's superior ranking (world #3 vs #21) and more established career, Lanier's mental resilience allowed him to come back from a first-game deficit and win six of the next seven points, ultimately breaking a seven-match losing streak against top-three players. This match illustrates that even highly ranked players can be defeated by opponents who demonstrate superior mental strength and consistency under pressure.

KFF Singapore Badminton Open 2026 | Anders Antonsen (DEN) [3] vs Alex Lanier (FRA) | QFHinzugefügt:
Lakshiaen here on court two. There's going to be tremendous support for Loanu in just a while. Right now, Alvi Farhan is playing Kan Naroka winning 169. And the winner of that match will play the winner of the match coming up here on court two.
>> Playing on two men's singles and Anton Denmark versus Alex Lania France.
Umpire Jason Fu Singapore. Service judge Emmy Sakamoto, Japan. Now playing on court two.
You can get Have we toss this is >> so these two have played each other four times already and it's good well quite impressive to see that l >> is a two all record now you would say well you would expect that given >> that he's a a top 10 player well actually the interesting thing is that he won the first two matches he played against Anna Anderson and that was 2023 and 2024 before he was a big name. He was a junior player.
Anderson is 29 years of age 6'1 from Arus third in the world currently. He has been a world number two first achieve in September of 2022, a world championship runner up in 2019.
He's finished third in that tournament in 2123 and last year in Paris, a European Games champion in 2019 and a European champion twice in 2021 and 2024. He's finished runners up three times in the European Championships 2017, 22 and this year.
won both his matches in straight games.
Victor Lie pushed him all the way in that opening game, didn't he? Took almost 70 minutes to beat the Canadian who, of course, went very, very far. Got a medal at the World Championships last year. Same as Antinson, who has, by the way, got 11 titles to his name and finished runners up here in 2023.
Alex Lana is just 21 years of age, 80 cm tall from core and is not too far away from his highest ranking achieved almost a year ago.
He also beat a Canadian along the way and a slightly easier path getting here.
He is the European champion from last year. He >> was ready to play >> world junior championships 2023. He was a bronze medalist. He's also the former European junior champion of 2022.
>> Jason F of Singapore's umpire.
>> Land has got four titles to his name.
>> All your masters this year is his most recent one.
>> Sakamoto is the Japanese service judge. Sorry.
He really made his name at the Japan Open in 2024. Lanier where he beat a number of huge names there including Chian Chen in the final.
That's when he announced himself on the world stage.
of course part of that victorious or well almost victorious I should say silver medal winning Thomas Cup team for France a few weeks ago at the start of this month and of course this year amazing moment for France to win the European team championships breaking Denmark's longstanding dominance in that competition and of course reaching that Thomas Cup final four the first time.
So it's been a very very good year for >> Lanier ladies and gentlemen >> France >> Roy Alexia France >> so much more to come from as well isn't there >> and this and this >> last was out of the opening round >> and it is only >> participation at this tournament >> Alexia to serve level three lanternson got to the final as I mentioned that's the only time he has gotten beyond the second round in four previous appearances >> your challenges >> was in 2023 early challenge Yeah.
>> Oh, just out.
>> Perition out.
>> One. What a challenge that play from Lanier.
>> It appears that Antonson has a crowd backing him.
There's the potentially more well-known name, more established name. I think it's fair to say a contentious figure at times.
Yesterday I saw he on court one he was having a few issues and some of the crowd got on his back. Some were supporting him. Polarizing figure at times So silver 21 well Antonensson season he won that Thailand open two weeks ago got to the final of the European Championships the semis of the Malaysia Open that's a super 1000 wasn't out in the opening round of the All England and the second round of the Indonesia Masters.
>> What a man to beat him at the All England Watanabi >> who we just saw here beat him very very comfortably.
partially benefited. Fair to say at the Thailand open with >> gave a walk over >> and he beat Grim level in the final which of course would have been a Massive thing for him.
3 points being racked up here.
>> It was a solid performance for Antonson over the Canadian world number 12 Victor Lie.
It's really been done a groundbreaking year. That's far wide, isn't it, from Lier? Not too pleased with that.
53.
Well, Anthony talked about the tricky conditions and uh this swing or this leg of the world tour is a very tricky one.
In previous weeks, he's talked about those conditions. We've had Thailand Malaysia. That's the Nimibbut Stadium, the Unifi Arena, formerly the Hiata.
It's changed.
So, same venue.
Uh here, the Singapore Indoor Stadium.
And we've got the Estoay. And these are all notoriously drifty environments. Not surprising given the air conditioning that >> and it's a challenge by Lan who got the last one right. Remember, >> don't think that will be the case here.
Let us wipe it off.
>> Yeah, very much in this time.
>> Challenge unsuccessful.
One challenge remaining.
63.
It's great for French bminton to see two men in the top 10.
Everything that they've achieved was the first Frenchman to become win the European champion. Christopher Popov has followed suit back to back and uh he said there's a really good generation and solid potential.
He said now to target world and Olympic medals and I think they would have been >> absolutely desperate to have done that during the last Olympics and world championships. Both happened to be in Paris.
>> Maybe it came just a tad too soon.
At the end of last year, of course, we had that incredible performance by Christopher over >> to win the world finals.
He did admit it was another level of difficulty. Lanier also to really establish yourself a full in those rankings.
Top five of course is where he wants to be. He hasn't done that yet. Climbing spot by spot being consistent. He says that's the problem.
He says it's the result of several years of training. Also the staff and support team is doing things the right way at the moment.
They had a good strategy in terms of tournaments that they take part in and development.
It's very rewarding and happy to be in the top 10.
He's got service over >> got there through hard work >> the choices they've made. So he's happy and he'll also be happy that he's just slowly trying to close that deficit.
>> Change 58.
>> Yeah, he's really um also highlighted that mental fortitude as one of his strengths. He says that could set him apart from his peers in the top 10.
Lanier thinks it's there's a huge mental component. People tend to think >> at the top level 68 about the physical and technical abilities. He begs to differ.
All spectators, please be reminded to not turn on the flashlight when taking photos and videos.
>> Thank you for your cooperation >> to ensure he's always supported where it's needed.
>> Says he's quite calm by nature.
Sometimes I've definitely seen the opposite of that, but that's normal, isn't it?
Oh, he had him scrambling around.
>> Liier 96 couldn't return that.
One thing he has said, of course, now that he's quite well established, his opponents are much more aware of him and his game.
Everyone has been studying each other a lot more, more analysis.
10 six.
>> Yeah, I think it's so impressive that he has indeed had that >> to beat Antonson when he was not established I think is even more impressive to be honest.
Obviously being a top 10 player now that something would be that would be less surprising.
Antinson leading here by four points again.
He was 56th in the world when he beat Antonson at the Olon Masters in 2023.
Antonson was 13th in the world at the time.
>> 11. And we go to the interval with Anson leading comfortably at the moment 116.
Just a quick one there on the Arctic Open in 2024.
Lan was 21st in the world when he beat world number three Antonson.
That was soon after winning that Japan Open.
>> So that was less of a surprise.
by then but still a good result.
>> Cot two 20 seconds.
>> So 116 to Anders Anderson >> 20 seconds with 116 play.
That's gone. Well, long six >> big lead now that he's building and Fourth routine six.
service for pull too high.
>> Too high that one.
>> Service over 730.
>> So this over 14.
>> Yeah. He's not able to really build a run of points at the moment, is he?
What the >> Alex? Alex check.
>> That was a good >> Thank you.
>> two run a run of two points. Five points twice he's done >> so far.
147.
>> So this over the last 14 points have gone inson's way.
So this over 158.
>> Yeah, he's not got to any kind of rhythm, has he? So far, Lier.
ducks on that one as it comes towards him.
>> Silver.
>> Yeah, the two matches he won. Lier. They went to three games and the last two that Hampton won which was at the mix team championships last year and at the China Masters as well in 2025 he won both of those in straight games.
He looks like he's well on his way here.
You would think as of now 10:15 looking to close down on his opponent.
>> That is about as close as it's been in a while. Four points.
>> Here's the deficit.
>> Change left.
Could be a good moment here for >> Lanier who's >> on his best run of points so far. Three in a row.
>> 11:15 This is good for Lanier >> who's really pushing now.
>> That's gone well long, isn't it?
So it's over 1612.
Service over 131 16.
So it's over 1713.
Well, as long as he gets a point here and there and does Anthony, then he should be okay.
>> Alexia challenges cool out.
That's well out.
Challenge unsuccessful.
No challenges remaining.
>> 183 play.
>> Oh, he's missed that chance.
>> 1913.
>> And Anthony now easing himself to a sixpoint lead.
service over 14. 19.
>> Going to make one more go of it. You would think >> and now has >> 26 game points, >> 14 well wide and Antonson takes the first game.
>> You got to say pretty comfortably. A little bit of a fight back from >> 214.
>> Lami towards the end, but it was too little too late.
>> Atson well on his way.
It's the fourth time in a row that he has won the opening game.
214 toen against Alex Li.
Hello.
Court two 20 seconds. Court two 20 seconds.
>> End users. Enders.
Second game, Levelville Clay.
Let's see now if a change of end helps Alex Lanier.
Oh, >> that is just out. I think that's out.
Oh, >> well left some with a little nod at the >> I think it was subst could have been this coach to be fair.
I think this should be uh the original decision will be upheld.
There we go.
>> Challenge unsuccessful.
One challenge remaining.
One left play.
too low.
Three left.
>> Well, doesn't appear that the change of ends has affected the balance of play at the moment. It is Attinson who surges to a very quick three love lead.
He's won eight of the last nine points.
Going back to the previous game as well.
Stretching back there is over one three shot. Alex, there you go.
Two, three.
Ladier battling back.
>> Thank you.
Oh, nicely done by Liier.
That's sliding out challenge.
>> He kind of expected he was looking at >> Lana there Antonson to see whether there would be any kind of challenge.
And this and this quick >> 42 two enemy just That is a superb winner down the line >> from Liier.
>> 34.
>> Bed his time and then unleashed.
Great stick smash there.
Change.
Some longer rallies we're getting here as well, aren't we?
It's won three of the last four points that year. So, it's getting to grips with things now. I think better.
Oh, unsighted >> from the service judge maybe as Lannuel was kind of walking across it.
So, this will not count as a challenge.
Heat.
Heat.
It is out >> four Complete four silver 54 >> Anthony edging in front. It's a far more competitive second game you feel right now.
seats full.
Remember in the first game after the first couple of points it was all the way to the silver 56 changing.
Good power from Lanier.
That clips the net and that maybe >> so it's over >> to take it over.
>> 75 So over 67 Yeah, well left. Looked at it all the way.
So it's over 86.
Alex, Alex, show one.
now trying to power through his next few points and take a decent lead into the interval as he did.
116.
>> Oh, not like that. He can't >> he was uh >> comfortable at this stage, wasn't he?
That's a good winner from Lanier crosscourt.
>> Certainly looks a lot happier on that end.
The players go.
Thank you judges.
8.
>> Well, it certainly wasn't this tight such an early stage in the match in the first game. So it's over 96 sorry 98.
So that will give Lanier some comfort but he will need to win this game obviously to stay in this welcome all technical officials on one The Tets rally this one.
It's far more keenly contested this game.
It's just long.
10 8 quick 10 8 So Antonson can still have a No, that's good. Ah, unsighted. I think that's in. I think Antonson's reaction as well says it all.
>> I think he knows he has lost that point.
That certainly looked good to me.
He's already returned the shuttle up the other end anyway to tell you what he thinks of it. There you go. Eight.
So over 910 play.
>> Oh, that's one you've got to put back at least. into >> that's frustrating for >> L on court one our last match >> 119 toen in the second game having already won the first 119 play.
>> So a much tighter second game at the moment with Antonson leading by just a couple points. Lanier has had his moments here but hasn't really been able to grab this game by the scruff of its neck which he kind of needs to do. And the Sanderson challenges call end.
I think you left change. Well, >> I think that was it.
is challenging this >> challenge unsuccessful.
>> Certainly in >> one challenge remaining.
So it's over. 10 11 play.
This is good from Lanier.
Alex is not managed to get more than two points in a row here.
This could be the moment to do it and get into the lead for the first time.
That's out silver 121.
Oh, great counter from Antonson.
back in front.
>> 11 13 11 change.
>> It's okay.
>> Looking to really push on, get into a second super open semifinal.
>> So, it's over 123.
>> That would be But the run he's having at the moment >> continue where things have been for him.
Actually, he's been good in recent months. Apart from that >> 14 12.
If you look at his recent record, sets all England. He's gone deep into tournaments.
So it's over 1314.
>> Well, Lanier his record against top three players which is of course where is third versus ninth in the world.
>> Thank you Lentis.
He's played top three players 12 times.
Alex Lanier, he's lost his last seven.
>> It's amazing.
>> 13.
>> He actually 14 >> won three of those matches. Three of the 12. And those three came and he was outside the top 20.
One of them was at that Japan Open in the semi-final. He beat Shui, of course, who was the world number one. That's such an outstanding result.
>> I think that was a surprise factor as well, wasn't it?
>> He beat Antinson at the Arctic Open and Victor Axelson, the great Victor Axelson had to retire against him at the Denmark Open. This is all in 2024 >> and since then he hasn't won.
>> Lanier now edges in front.
So he finally takes the lead.
Lanier for the first time since he was up 3-2 in the first game.
It's a long time coming.
>> It's going to take it through.
Play a circle and it's new shot 15 very tight at this stage. It wasn't like that in the previous game.
>> Ramier will feel encouraged by the slope.
It's a decent run, doesn't he? Of points.
>> So, it's over 16 15 back in front.
Lots of noise in here at the indoor stadium at the moment because home favorite Loku in action on court one against Chu Jen Chinese Taipei.
>> Now that lead increases to two.
Encouraging moments here for Lan.
Change.
>> Sustained runner points now needed by Lani.
cuz you know Antonson is going to try and hunt him down quickly.
>> That is ruled out. And does challenge it.
>> Might be in with a shout here. We shall see.
No, it is out challenge >> and now leads by three laning.
>> It's coming at a good time for him. 14 15 >> play.
>> Yes. Suddenly just seems to have lost his way.
>> And is Anderson and It's now four points in a row here. The one pulled back.
>> 169 >> by Andersonson here. Can he still have a say in this second game?
Thank you.
>> 1619 >> played that so well. The flick serve over >> never looked back after that.
and Lan has four game points.
>> Oh, he's managed to save that. Looked like Hson was in poor position to win that point >> game. He jogs off >> the second game at left >> 2116.
>> One game more.
>> We are going into a rubber after comes good towards the end.
2116 Oh, there go.
Court two 20 seconds. Court two 20 seconds.
>> And this.
>> So great work there from Alex Lanier who >> took the lead.
for the first time in that game at 1514 >> and then went on to win six of the next seven points.
We were saying he needed just a good run of points. It came at a right time for him and it's just the boost he needs now.
>> But it's that far end that seemingly been the the better side.
scary.
>> So going to go by that then >> that's where >> and Anthony still trying to build up as big a lead as possible before they have to switch. Let's see >> how that pans out.
two, one.
Oh, he played that late.
Three >> just miscalculated on that one. Anson It's good defense there initially from >> over two three and this change it's a nice little rivalry this now Denmark and France within the European context bit of an age gap between these two but uh it's it's a nice little rivalry that's developing I think it's uh from Denmark's point of view the concern is beyond Hampton at the moment in terms of men's singles.
We've just had the retirement of course of Victor Axelson and that was the issue at the uh Thomas Cup, the depth in the men's singles.
That is out three.
Get ready.
>> Again. He's played that late.
over.
>> He's quite the character, isn't he?
three sentence it.
>> Second time I think in the last few points where he's just kind of miscalculated that >> 43.
>> Certainly plays up to the crowd at times. Plays against the crowd as well.
not afraid to be the villain that he needs to be.
Tips the net from Lanier.
Service over 4.
Full heat.
Oh, the chance >> not taken by Lier. Top of the net. It goes into two.
Might have bust a string in the process.
Do it quick.
A 54 play.
>> Well, that might have been veering out, you know, for Anton. He played it anyway. over five.
>> Again, it might have been just that indecision. It's in that little corner of his, the backhand corner for Anonson >> that has just foxed him a bit in these early few points of the third game.
seats five.
>> Yeah, it's slowed right down, isn't it?
This third game as we approach the hour mark here.
75.
Hey So it's over 67.
Big roar there from Antonson.
>> A gentle reminder, ladies and gentlemen, film or take videos with the flash on.
Please ensure that you do not have flash photography on during game play. Thank you for your call of this match.
Yeah, he lets that go. He knows generally that will travel.
over.
>> He's asking for >> quickly looked down at the ground. Well, at deciding games over his career, has won 65% of his matches in these very situations.
>> And if we look at this year alone, it's an excellent record. 89% of matches won >> in the deciding game.
So he's a master this year in these situations.
>> Alex Lier has not had a very good time in deciding games for this year.
This one holds up.
>> 97 Silver >> just a point behind now. 8 9 >> Yeah. Only once this year has Lanier won a match that has gone to the deciding game beating Ali Farhan at the Malaysia Open at the start of the year.
>> He's lost all the others.
>> So he's not had such a good time of it.
But uh he is in the lead here.
>> Overall in this career though he wins about 64% of matches >> 10.
in the deciding game. So just a bit behind his opponent though as I said the dane this year has been superb in these very situations.
>> Thank you Les.
Thank you.
>> 10 8 118.
>> So, it is Lanier who's got the three-point lead here at the interval.
They will swap hands, though.
See if that helps him in any way.
>> Port two 20 seconds. For two 20 seconds.
118 play.
Well, Anderson had his last Super 750 was the French Open last year, which he won.
He's gone to a semi-final or better in the LA in two of the last three Super 750s.
So, it's over 91.
It's an emphatic start of the new end.
Goes for the flick serve.
Good reactions there from Anson.
some silver.
>> Zier with a threepoint lead here.
Mountain's overall record in 29 previous Super 750s.
He >> has won four of them.
We had two previous finals and four semi-finals, >> 131.
>> One and three is a pretty good record to get into the final four or better, but he might be in danger here of that not happening. trailing >> by four points here to Lanier.
>> Oh, he's done so well to get there, but it was always going to be a tough ask >> to follow up after.
>> 13.
Thank you.
>> Well, for he's not had anywhere near as many Super 750s obviously and the last that he played in >> the India Open earlier this year. He was out in the opening round. The French Open his home tournament also the opening round.
Last time we got to a semi-final was three tournaments ago. Three Super 750s ago, the Denmark Open last year.
>> So his record is his very first Super 750, the Japan Open of 2024, right after the Olympics, the one where he really made his name and he won it.
One win, one final, and two semi-finals.
Antonson has narrowed the deficit to two points.
>> This go So it's over 141.
That's a really good shot.
Well worth the pumped fist.
He's still making a game out of it here.
And >> right on Lanier's tail.
He's dictating proceedings at the moment.
Atinson moving Lanni all over the court.
Can he get a winner though out of this?
>> A nice counter punch there. That's going to be out though.
That's one of the longer rallies we've had in a while.
Just the one point in it. 49 shots. Our longest rally. There you go.
this way. Mix his move now. The dane over >> and he fends him off for now.
>> 13. Quick.
Well, given that uh >> was in a pretty decent position a short while ago.
>> 139 Lu still a couple of points ahead.
1613 >> three clear.
>> Are we going to get another big name eliminated? Yesterday it was here on court two Shui eliminated by >> Ali Fan. That's good by the way.
>> 14. This is uh obviously nowhere near as remarkable an achievement.
It's all going a little wayward at the moment.
>> Founders Anderson and he's running out of time and points.
>> Trails by three. It's a crucial juncture here.
Alex Oh, he couldn't put that one away.
>> Really needs this point. He doesn't get it.
>> 184 >> and Lanier is four clear in a really good position now. But >> as I've said throughout the day today and even yesterday, >> we have seen some pretty good fightbacks from this position.
>> Even a little worse from an 1812 I think we had yesterday.
>> So take nothing for granted. I'm sure Lana isn't.
184.
He really needs a point here, Antonson.
>> And he duly gets it.
14 18.
Now remember we were saying that Lania got that run at an important times around this moment. This is what Antonson needs.
Lania will be acutely aware.
That's out.
>> Chipping away here. Antinson >> 168.
Couple of points in a row. Trying to build up some momentum here.
>> Good moment for him indeed.
Goes with a flick serve.
Oh, that's tight. But he's out and he's not challenging.
>> 196 That's just the break he needs perhaps.
Lanier now >> get ready.
>> Ladier now with four match points 16.
Big moment here.
A great win for Alex Lanier to be the third seed here.
It's a great rivalry this one that's building up between these players and Alex Ladia breaks a run of seven consecutive defeats against top three players.
>> He's taken out 21 >> the third seed 21 >> and he's into his first ever Singapore Open semifinal.
A match that ebed and flowed.
>> Great scenes here. Lania delighted with that.
He came back after that disappointing first game to win with some pache for the Frenchman.
So Alexander France beats a 13th from Denmark and Antonson 1421 2116 2116.
It's taken him almost 80 minutes to do it in the battle of the European giants.
As we look back at our results here, the STOs put up some resistance against the four seeds, but Jerusen too strong in the end. Wangi continues her good recent run. The second seed from China beat Pabi Chiong of Thailand who was the seventh seed in an hour. The Yamsad sisters are on the comeback trail after an injury to one of them and they lost though to Igorashi and Shida. Chenu Fay was pushed, wasn't she, by took Miyazaki, but then had a very good and easy third and deciding game in 79 minutes. Ranki and Shetty were given quite the scare, weren't they, by Kong and Thai, who beat them before at the All England. They couldn't repeat those heroics here.
A very unfortunate retirement. Potoi, we hope she's okay.
which means Du Kapula and Tanisha Kasto being Chun Anto 13 seats from Malaysia because of that retirement and we had two epic men's singles battles at the end. Koki Watabi edging up top 10 player Lakshia Sen and just a minute longer it took for Alex Lanier to beat the third seed from Denmark Anders Antinson.
So that brings proceedings to an end here on court two. All matches will be on court one tomorrow. Semiinal day here at the Singapore Open 2026. Our coverage will begin at noon local time. From Shazard and our team, thanks a lot for being here and with us on Courtu. We'll see you very, very soon.
