London and Kelly brilliantly decode the semiotics of style, proving that costume design is often more articulate than the script itself. This analysis elevates fashion from mere aesthetics to a sophisticated masterclass in visual storytelling.

Stacy and Clinton Break Down the Style of WednesdayAdded:
Have we ever been in bed together before?
>> Aside from the private tapes.
>> Well, we're in bed watching television shows and movies from a style perspective. And um today I thought it would be fun if we did an episode of Wednesday, the Netflix series. And because we both like Lady Gaga, >> love Ga.
>> So let's watch Wednesday season 2 episode 6. It's called Wo Thyself, directed by Angela Robinson. And the costume design was by Colleen Atwood and Mark Sutherland.
>> Colleen Atwood is one of the most famous costume stylists in the world, I'm pretty sure.
>> I think so.
>> Well, we have a cold open here that is unlike any other episode, right? Because we see Wednesday wearing color. She's got bright blue eyes shadow. She's got red lipstick. She's dancing around.
She's a happy camper.
>> She's got a mohare sweater or something like that that's like an ombre that goes from like a Kool-Aid red to pink to blue and white. And she's got her sparkly sneakers on and the whole world is like, "What the [ __ ] is up with Wednesday, Adam? Why is Wednesday wearing so much color?" And I really like her outfit. I think it's adorable. Do you like it?
>> I do. And I think it's very sweet that she's so happy. But you're like, "That's not Wednesday.
>> That's not Wednesday." Right off the bat, the wardrobe is telling us something's not right here. And then we go >> 16 hours earlier. Look at her. She's in black and gray.
>> Look number two.
>> Okay. So then this is interesting, right? Cuz Lissa shows up. All right. So now >> Lissa died.
>> Oh, by the way, spoiler alert. Yes.
>> If you haven't seen >> Yes. Lissa's dead >> and she wears fabulous suits. This one in particular, I love. You don't like?
>> Oh, we're allowed to disagree. So >> Oh, thank you for telling me. But I do like the pop of the color on the jacket.
I feel like it just adds there's something very retro about her looks like all kind of almost 40s inspired.
>> I feel like sometimes it ventures into like mother of the bride territory for me. Like if it if >> Well, she is a school mom.
>> I know. Yeah. She's a spirit guide.
She's dead. Which means to me that in the afterlife she should have access to the best tailor possible.
>> Well, that's fair.
>> Yeah. And see like here it's not terri I just wish I wish this fabric had a little stretch in it. That's what I'm that's what I'm getting at. Okay.
Because it doesn't have any stretch.
>> It looks like a tropical wool.
>> Yes. And because of that it doesn't look like it fits her as perfectly as some of the other costumes in this show. What I think is interesting about this is that really does look like they should have done a side bent almost with the with the blazer like almost treat it more like a tunic >> and then they the the skirt should have been shorter or longer but that length is so unflattering.
>> It's so unflattering for her. Right.
Like and that kick pleat I don't think it's doing anything. Obviously she probably needs it to move.
>> Exactly. But the kick plate on the side, why wouldn't you have the kick plate in the back?
>> I know. Yeah. I just Yeah. There's something about it like if this imagine this exact silhouette done in a fabric that had a little bit of stretch, it would be snatched. She would be snatched.
>> And if it was blue or yes, >> you know, some other this oyster color is not for her. But I >> but she is a she is dead.
>> She is dead. I do maintain that this um the collar of this jacket I think looks so divine on her and I love the foolard print underneath. But I do see in the full length what you're saying. Yeah.
Like there is something.
>> It almost looks like the skirts turned around.
>> It does. Right. It's it's for me it's a it's an 8.5 out of 10.
>> Not that we not that we give ratings on things, >> right?
>> Maybe it's cuz she's a tall woman. They have to make this from scratch for her.
It's like she they didn't buy this off the rack, but they probably don't buy any of the stuff off the rack.
>> Is this a deliberate choice about the character, right? Is she a little bit frumpy? Is she supposed to feel this way? Maybe that's why the fabric doesn't give.
>> Yeah, but I agree with the pop collar. I love the the the fard.
>> And I do like the gloves. I I I think those are maybe, you know, there's something to this. I But you're right.
It misses the mark.
>> Look number three. You got to love the school uniform. This purple and black.
>> I don't love it.
>> Nope. I don't like it. I would not go to that school because of the uniform.
>> Wait, wait, wait. What? Why not?
>> No, I'm not doing it. I don't like it.
>> You don't like a vertical stripe? I don't like purple.
>> God, >> I went to Northwestern for grad school and I never wear any Northwestern merch because I just don't really like purple.
It's nothing against Northwestern. It was a great school. Um, >> it's amazing how everything you don't like turns into a humble brag.
>> That is a lie.
>> Has anybody else noticed?
>> That is a lie.
>> I met Joe Beth Williams a couple of times. I met Joe Oh, did I tell you I met Craig T. Nelson and I talked to him about poltergeist. I know Olivia Newton John. She was my best friend. She wasn't my >> I hate purple. I went to Northwestern.
There's a lot of purple at Northwestern.
It's true.
>> It's the school color.
>> I mean, personally, I I love the purple.
I love all the stripes. I think the purple and black is chic. I feel like it's very funny because if you were color blind, you wouldn't be able to necessarily distinguish it from the black and the gray, which is kind of interesting.
>> Yeah. I I particularly like when Pugsley here has the contrasting >> black and white. black and white, a horizontal stripe. I think that that's really fun and it works. It's just me. I just don't love I There's really not much in my life that's purple. I don't know why I have an aversion to it. It 100% works for the show >> and it would work on you.
>> It No, it would not. Um I've tried purple on. It just does not work on me.
>> I I have I have been with you in purple.
>> You have not?
>> That Elvis jacket, that brocade jacket that you had that we called the Elvis jacket. That wasn't purple.
>> Oh, yeah. No, I vaguely velvet, right?
Oh, I did have a purple velvet jacket.
Just tell me to shut the [ __ ] up.
>> Shut the [ __ ] up.
>> Seriously, I'm so stupid.
>> Look number four.
>> Let's talk about Hester here.
>> Hester is fabulous.
>> She's amazing.
>> Amazing. So, so this this shooting look here. So, I think that this look is phenomenal. Look at I mean, we know Joanne Lumley is a woman of a certain age, right? She in these boots up to the knee. I mean, are they It's like I can't tell if they're laces cuz it's very dark.
>> Oh, yeah. No, no. It looks like laces and grommets to me.
>> Yeah, laces and grommets.
>> Almost like, you know, like a real combat boot.
>> I mean, everything about it. The hair.
>> Y >> Okay. I think we could work your hair toward this as a goal >> if we can and get me in this outfit. I am 100% all for it.
>> You would 100% rock this outfit.
>> And um and I love Wednesday's coat. Like to me that's a shooting coat because it's you know it like with the shotgun it really >> I feel like the headless horsemen would wear that exact coat. Right.
>> Exactly. Kabad crane. Exactly. And I love this framing of the shot. I know this has nothing to do with anything but I think it's so chic the way they have the what do we call that? A pergola.
What are we calling that? The ha.
>> The ha. The hubba. Where's the glass? In front of the you know mansion. Like the way it it's a very Wes Anderson shot.
>> It really is. That's a beautiful shot.
All right, so take in the winged eyeliner just for a moment cuz it's really the most perfect wing I think I've ever seen on Look at that. Look at that.
>> Look at that. It's a wisp.
>> It's a wisp. And it's done so well.
>> And look at the brow arch. I mean, and the lip line.
>> The hair and the makeup in the shot are exquisite.
>> And she's not dewy.
>> She's not going for that dewy [ __ ] just but perfect powder, perfectly matte, not it doesn't look cakey. Her skin looks like luminescent >> and the jacket has all this tone on tone black detail to it which just adds layers and layers of interest without screaming like this is a costume. This is a look, right? That's also I think Colleen Atwood has an incredible mastery of kind of like dramatic imagery. Like really look at the contrast of the black on black against what they're shooting like the floral.
>> So good.
>> Look number four.
>> Okay. So So Gaga is in this episode for about three minutes total, right? Yeah.
Like >> I can't Colleen Atwood is gonna come at me. I I don't this doesn't really do it for me.
>> Really? Gaga as a spectre doesn't work.
I mean, what makes me laugh is it looks like when we freeze it, it looks like she's superimposed onto the screen in this weird white dress like and she looks so teeny tiny to me.
>> I I don't I guess I don't understand that. Why the mermaid hem, right?
Because that's very Morticia's silhouette. Um, and so is she the anti-Morticia because she's doing this this basic silhouette in white. Watch when she lands here. She takes off the veil. Do the dramatic reveal.
>> It's Donatella Versace.
>> Well, she'll play Donatella when Donatella dies.
>> Okay. So, we've got some interesting neck detail here. That's sort of like capy, right? The fold over her neckline and a cape. But other than that, like that's it. Colleen would I think you're a genius. A genius. But I I don't know.
I'm a little bit underwhelmed by this.
>> Okay. What would you be looking for, though? Let's think about this. I mean, there's no jewelry really here. There's no accessories, right? She's a spectre, >> but but but what would you like to see?
What is it? Color? Is it shape? What bothers you?
>> I just want I think I want more. I want more of something. And I'm not sure what it is. Like, it's fine. Like, you're a ghost, a spectre. Okay, maybe you don't care about clothes in the afterlife, but like >> we'll never know until we get there, >> right? I mean, but you made a choice to do a mermaid silhouette, so why nothing else? Why not a drop earring here? I don't know. I feel like, couldn't you some crystals, a crown would be something tiara?
>> A daytime tiara.
>> Think about all the [ __ ] that we used to say on what not to wear. Color, texture, pattern, shine.
>> Well, where is it? There's no color.
There's no texture. There's no pattern.
>> Shiny.
That's >> That's CGI.
>> That's CGI. But she's sh at least she meets one of our four criteria.
>> I I guess there is a like a frayed unfinished edge on the sh.
>> I do wonder if that's just cuz they just cut a bolt of fabric and put it around her shoulders and said that's interesting.
>> I know. Well, I think you're touching on what I think happened. I think they were like, "Oh, Lady Gaga doesn't have time for a fitting. I wonder if they had had the seven wardrobe fittings that they probably do for everyone else." You know, maybe not seven, but like I don't think Lady Gaga went in, gave them a lot of >> she got short changed or they short change or she changed.
>> I feel like somebody got short changed like we might have here. Oh god, I People are going to come at me. Put it in the comments cuz I don't read them.
>> Put in the comments cuz he doesn't care.
>> Look number five.
>> Okay, look at the airbrushing happening on >> this. This is brutal.
>> Catherine. Wow.
>> This is brutal. I This looks a little bit like animation.
>> Like the dress coming down. Like Lady Gaga coming down. Yeah, like a spectre.
>> Yeah, like a spectre.
>> People were so cruel about her on the red carpet. And you've got to wonder, is it because that's the way she looks in real life and people are expecting this, which is lit and CGI manipulated and all of the other things.
>> I know. I I don't think people can tell the difference between reality and fantasy anymore because the lines have been so blurred that you don't know if what you're seeing is actually real or not, >> right? And I mean, Zeta Jones is gorgeous now, then, on camera, off camera, in between. I mean, shut the [ __ ] up. Like, honestly, >> I I really hate when um women are braided for looking their age. As if it's some sort of feat to be old and not look your age. That just takes a lot of money and a lot of knives.
>> Exactly. And even when you have the money and the knives, I always say like, what do you look like when you just got out of the shower? You know, it's like so many people you see on the red carpet, >> I look wet.
>> You look wet. And it's like from the neck down out of the shower with your hair not done and your makeup off. Like, can you look at yourself in the mirror and be happy with it? I don't know. If you can, great. It's like, I don't care.
>> I do believe that you should be able to do what you want with your body. And I will continue to eat Doritos with caviar.
>> That feels like a real waste of caviar.
>> It's fabulous.
>> I don't know.
>> Look number six.
>> So, a lot of stuff happens.
And there's not a lot of style stuff that happens. There's a lot of plot.
>> There's a lot of plot stuff that happens. But here we are at least with it's Gwendalyn Christy is the actress.
>> She plays Lissa. So let's talk about this outfit now on Lissa. This is the second outfit that I'm just I don't know.
There's something about Look, I get it.
This popped >> the popped color is really the only thing I like here.
>> I know. And I'm not even 100% sure that I like this particular shade of green.
It's like a pistachio and a praying mantis had a baby and that's that's the you know that's the color of the baby.
>> I am in my ugly green phase both in clothing, interiors, you name it. I'm like the uglier the green the more I want to lay it on top of another ugly green. So that's just a weird preference at the moment. So I'm I'm very much into the green.
>> I feel like if it didn't have this collar, let's imagine that this silhouette just had like a ton more sheen.
>> You know, it wasn't like a silk dupion.
It was more like a >> like a silk satin. silk satin like it would be a mother of the bride jacket, >> you know? I don't know. I just >> And it does look like they just tacked that green fabric on there. Does not look like that is sewn on.
>> I mean, it is very weird that they put her in the same jacket style, except this one does not. I mean, she's not wearing um a blouse underneath it.
Really, it looks like mesh or something.
I wonder like if you're going to put an actor in the same exact silhouette over and over with teeny tiny variations in the fabric and the color, like why bother? Like just keep her in the same outfit the whole time.
>> But it is funny because they are essentially all doing that. They're all wearing one outfit with tiny variations in change. Like Morticia loses the neck and it's bare or you know um they're in the school uniform or some other version of the school uniform. It's kind of interesting. So, now she's got a cape in the same fabric.
>> Is it a suit or is this a dress?
>> I think it's a dress, right? And she's got a belt that's got like a lot of charms on it. Like a Oh, it's just like Melanie Griffith's charm bracelet in the beginning of Working Girl.
>> And here they both have Tippi Hendren hair, >> right? It all comes back to Tippy.
>> It all comes back to Tippy.
>> Um, yeah, it's a solid look as a character.
>> I think it is a solid look as a character, but it really is a character, right? It is both school marmish and kind of witchy. It's got the cape. It's got the pointy toe. There are things about it that like speak to something caricaturish without going full costume.
>> Exactly. And the pop collar with the contrasting green gives it a little bit of a sinister vibe to it. Like her character is not the nicest person.
>> She's really not.
>> She's really not. So this gives her It's like a little touch of venom.
>> Look number seven. They switch back. Oh, thank God. I mean it was too much. It was it was very very nerve-wracking to have Wednesday be Enid and Enid be Wednesday.
>> Well, I will say though that it gave the two actresses a great opportunity to like have some fun.
>> Yes.
>> Pretending to be the other person's character.
>> Exactly. Oh my god, it would be so much fun. I wish I could get away with pretending to be you for a day.
>> A whole day be exhausting.
>> It'd be amazing. Okay, so maybe we should talk about Enid's final tube dress cuz it's literally the last new look in the show.
>> It's very Chanelcoated.
>> Is it?
>> Don't you think? Oh my god. If it had double C's and like a It was like a double breasted dress. Don't you feel like it would be so >> Yeah.
>> I mean, now that I'm sort of pausing on it, I like it a little bit more.
>> Final thoughts.
>> I guess we should rate this.
>> I give this four out of five. Bangs.
Five bangs. Like >> stay tast bangs.
>> Oh, bangs.
>> I thought you meant like a bang. Like >> like a bang.
>> Yeah.
>> I'm giving it four out of five fringe.
>> I give this on a seven day a week calendar a Wednesday.
>> Wow. You were really tough on Wednesday this episode. You were tough on these costumes.
>> I have the utmost respect for the costume designers. Don't get me wrong.
>> I don't get you wrong.
>> And maybe it's just cuz I'm not like a Wednesday head. You know what I mean?
It's just like this isn't my it's not my you know >> I don't think you I I think you make valid points Clinton and I think that we should I like to be validated by you.
>> Yes. I think we should continue with some other episode some other time maybe in season 3 and hope that Gaga gets better >> I mean her outfit >> and somebody cares more about what Christy is wearing at all times. Um, but no, but I would be curious to see if you still feel the same way or if maybe there's another episode where you're happier.
>> I'm cur I think it might be justice for the tall girls. I want justice for the tall girls.
>> Wow. Justice for the tall girls. That's no joke. Okay. I am a proud 56 which is tall for a girl as you know and tallish for a girl as you know. And um the problem that I have found well you already know about my arms but it's my limbs generally speaking. I have like a short torso and tall legs, so nothing is ever long enough on me.
>> Oh my god, you sound like a what not to wear contributor. I've got a short torso. Oh, shut the [ __ ] up. We used to say like you got you're halfway to You're like, but look at Barbie. She's got a short torso, too.
>> Complaining. Okay, I'm just saying it's impossible for me to find pants that go to the ground unless I get like a 34 inseam. Well, if you weren't eating all that caviar with Doritos, you could buy some custommade [ __ ] pants.
>> Listen, I am going to pick my battles where I choose. I'm going to complain about the length of my pants and I'm going to eat all the [ __ ] caviar I want.
>> You're going to get diarrhea.
>> Yes, especially if it gives me diarrhea.
>> Well, when you eat a half pound of it in a sitting half pound of it, you just sit on the can until that half pound is gone.
It's amazing because you can eat a half a pound and lose a pound.
>> Caviar. Nature's diuretic.
>> Why' they wear that?
>> Why' they wear that?
