During the 1980 Gwangju Uprising, women played crucial but largely forgotten roles as leaders and broadcasters who faced severe persecution, including torture and imprisonment, yet their stories have been systematically marginalized in historical narratives despite their extraordinary courage and sacrifice in defending democracy.

[🗨️#달리Talk] 우리가 알지 못했던 광주를 지킨 여성들의 이야기 #SBS스페셜 #달리톡 #달리 #DALIHinzugefügt:
I told those who want to live to go back. On the night the martial law forces' ultimatum was delivered, the fear of death enveloped the South Jeolla Provincial Headquarters, which was the headquarters of the citizen militia.
Throw away your gun and commit suicide. Throw away your gun and commit suicide. It is not too late, so report yourself immediately. At that moment, a voice echoed through Sinnae, Gwangju, cutting through the silence.
Citizens of Gwangju, the police are invading right now. Everyone, please come out to the provincial office and save the citizens and students. We must save Gwangju to the very end. The woman's voice, rising and spreading like this as it cuts through the dawn air. Back then, the martial law troops must have been tightening the noose, encircling and marching to suppress the uprising, so how was such a broadcast possible?
[Music] [Music] Here are the operation results as of 6 o'clock.
207 rioters were captured alive and two were killed. There was not a single piece of civilian wisdom. On the morning the truth was obscured, the ten-day struggle came to an end like that.
She, who remained at the wiretapping station until the very end and broadcast at dawn, disappeared without a trace.
It was a very impressive broadcast because many citizens heard it, but it was n't clearly revealed until then who broadcast it. In May 40 years ago, [music] was certainly there, but this movement must continue while restraining sacrifices.
The women who disappeared. If you go to the library, there are a huge number of related [music] books.
there. However, all of that material consists of male speakers. Have you ever seen a close-up photo of Docheonghak Square? There are a lot of women. So many people came out to the square to raise their voices and participate, but where have all their stories gone?
Where and why have women's stories disappeared? I would like to now call out the names of the countless women of May whom I encountered on my way to find the protagonist who held the last dawn broadcast on May 27. The New Army, which seized power through a coup following the death of President Park Chung-hee, declared martial law to suppress resistance from citizens demanding democratization.
However, protests calling for democracy continued nationwide day after day. As large-scale protests [music] were taking place in the Ark and democracy and enthusiasm were not easy to achieve, the new military announced that starting at midnight on May 18, it would expand the state of emergency nationwide, close all schools [music], ban all assemblies, and strictly control media reporting.
Troops and weapons were deployed against civilians in a manner akin to war, and in this chaotic situation, most of the democratic figures who could have become leaders of the citizens had been arrested prior to May 18. Heavily armed soldiers and tanks stormed in front of the citizens resisting with their bare hands, and as the situation deteriorated by the minute, it is said that a completely unexpected person led the protesters. Ms. Jeon Ok-ju, who played the role of a leader of the era at that time. Ms. Jeon Ok-ju, when we were organizing the materials, we titled it 'Female Agitation Appearing Like a Comet'. He was not someone who participated in student movements or democratization movements at all, but I think he was someone who possessed an extraordinary sense of righteousness, courage, and things like that.
Her name is Jeon Ok-ju. Jeon Ok-ju, who appeared on May 19, took the microphone and stepped onto the podium even while facing off against armed martial law troops.
At that time, we were really, really well united with one another and followed me well, and the decisive day for Jeon Ok-ju's activities was May 21st.
I found the two of them standing more than halfway up in that disheveled state, but I could n't bring myself to look them in the face. They said, "We are preparing the Nihakga in a state where it is covered in so much blood that its outline is completely unrecognizable." Even when I went, I did the broadcast like that. Citizens of Gangju, I have lost a younger sibling I truly loved.
This meant sailing on the martial law forces' lie that there were no civilian casualties, and countless citizens followed suit.
[Music] Jeon Ok-ju, who was elected as a citizen representative and even attempted to cooperate with the provincial governor and the martial law forces.
She had simply come to Gwangju briefly as a dance [music] instructor to help her aunt with her work, but after witnessing the horrific situation, she stepped forward to broadcast on the streets.
Around 1:00 PM on the 21st, the district carried out a mass announcement directed at the citizens [music], and while the protesters were in chaos, Jeon Ok-ju [music] was arrested.
[Music] was accused of the absurd charge of being a special spy from North Korea. I'll kick you in the knees and kill you [ __ ]. I'll kill you for saying the truth.
So, regarding gun loading, I saw that you have to do exactly what to make that click sound. I couldn't move because of the fear that if that millstone pulled it, I would die since it was behind me. Not only did I do that, but I also had to endure a humiliating experience as a woman.
My stomach hurt so much that I asked [music] to let me go to the bathroom.
Then, they loaded the guns, placed one against my chest like this and the other against my back, and dragged me to the lawn. How could I face Taebin after showing my naked body in front of those soldiers I had never even heard of in my life? I really [music] will go crazy with anger and frustration until I die whenever that shame suddenly crosses my mind, even while I'm sleeping.
[Music] The severe aftereffects were still tormenting Ms. Jeon Ok-ju even now, 40 years later.
However, she says that even if that day comes again, she will not hesitate.
Citizens of Gangjo, our brothers and sisters are dying right now.
How can you sleep comfortably at home? Please come to the provincial government office and save our brothers and sisters. The food is piled up like a mountain in front of me. Just looking at the picture, doesn't it look like it takes about 30 or 40 minutes? I was caught, tied up with a nylon rope like this, laid face down like in the picture, and beaten, so it was scary at that time. Now I've left completely. I asked the kid tied up next to me, " Hey, how and where are we going?" Then he said, "I do n't know either. He had a feeling, too." In front of me. Then, because he said that, they trampled on him while he was lying face down on the ground, and he died. I was in terrible agony because of the guilt I felt knowing that he died because I shouldn't have talked to him next to me.
Gwangju in May 1980.
Back inside, there were certainly countless women on that hot street. This [music][song] is given. It will result in participation that can never be recovered, and the nationalization of that country cannot be voiced.
Citizens facing the destruction of the presidential election, you have come forward many times, and there have been various statements as well as poems urging democratization. In the case of Ms. Lee Hyun-ju, there were rumors that she had died.
No, even Mr. Choi In-seon himself, and quite a few others, do not reveal themselves.
The women in the flashy photos also remain a mystery.
The atmosphere of disrespect toward the women who participated in the May 18 Uprising was clearly evident even at the hearing nine years later.
Mr. Hong Geum, who appeared as a [music] witness.
She was on May 23, 1980. He was the sole survivor of the Earth shooting incident that took place in Junam Village, Gwangju. Due to the indiscriminate shooting by the police, 15 of the 18 people on board the Earth were killed instantly, and two of the three survivors were shot dead on the nearby mountain [music]. There were a few female students in the car begging to be saved. Yes, they were waving their hands begging to be saved, but even so, windows kept flying at us. It is a painful memory, but we did our best to uncover the truth. He slammed the daegeum down and asked if I wanted to have one of my breasts cut off too.
[Music] A puzzling question is asked to Mr. Metal, who has struggled to finish his testimony. I'm not sure if this will be trustworthy, but did the witness get married? I didn't do it.
Uh, Hani Bon thought very deeply this morning about why she hadn't given up on the idea of getting married in the future. Since I was going to get married anyway, I thought I should marry a man from Gyeongsang Province to heal this Sralin wound.
But I wondered if there was n't anyone willing to plant the seeds of such a historical mission for the witness, so it was quite significant. Then does that make sense? Is that what you call the question? As a citizen, I am someone who can marry anyone from any region, so I thought that the reaction was one that disregarded us women and me personally. So I felt very unpleasant. The women of that May day had no choice but to hide somewhere due to the [music] attitude of viewing the women who participated in the May 18 Uprising and sought to reveal the truth merely as a topic of conversation or subtly disparaging them, rather than respecting them.
While checking the records of [music] people captured during the final crackdown at the provincial government building on May 27, we were able to find a woman who was arrested while broadcasting at dawn.
Her name is Park Young-soon. She said that while she was in Jinnae, she left Gwangju and lived with inspiration for over 30 years. It was released in the winter of 1982.
Towards Gyeongnam.
where?
Gyeongnam I used a different name now. It means that I wanted to erase that day and be forgotten by everyone. I did n't even know I was participating in [music]. Around me. At that time, the citizens who emphasized this [music] thought that the woman who was the last person to broadcast at dawn had died.
Why did she leave Gwangju hiding even her name, after appealing not to forget us [music] at the last dawn? I was in a state where I couldn't even live in Gangjo, and since I was called a rioter at the time, no one wanted to meet me, and I was a bit scared when I came out. Encountering it like this.
Park Young-soon, who joined the protests on May 23, sensed on the 26th that the situation was serious. A final ultimatum was delivered to surrender, ordering them to empty the provincial government building, which was the headquarters of the citizen militia, and even [music] the self-proclaimed building. Then, around 3 a.m., an emergency was declared inside the provincial government building.
At the time, Mr. Kim Jeong-bae, who was the chairman of the student relief measures committee, just burst through the broadcasting door.
Gae-gun has already completely surrounded the provincial government building. Please broadcast it quickly. I was trembling because I was holding hands, so the male student next to me turned up the volume to the maximum. Five broadcasts.
And then I did a broadcast.
Mr. Park Young-soon, who returned to that spot exactly 40 years later.
Citizens of Gwangju, the police are invading right now. Everyone, please come out to the provincial office and save the citizens and students. Citizens of Gwangju, we will wash Gwangju to the very end.
Please do not forget our brothers and sisters.
[Music] May Gwangju. Her name is May, the month we were wearing. It is another name for Gwangju that we must remember. no see.
