His father died and left three million dollars to a stranger.
Added:His father died and left $3 million to a stranger. That stranger turned out to be his brother, a brother he never knew existed. Charlie Babbitt is a hotshot car dealer in Los Angeles, arrogant, fast-talking, furious at the world. He hated his father. He was shipped off to boarding school as a kid, wasn't even allowed home when his mother died. So, when the old man finally passes, Charlie flies to Cincinnati expecting a fortune.
Instead, he finds out every penny went to a mental institution for a patient named Raymond. Charlie breaks into the facility and meets him. Raymond is in his 40s, autistic, barely able to dress himself, terrified of airplanes, obsessed with Judge Wapner and bedtime routines. He also has a savant memory.
He counts spilled toothpicks in seconds, memorizes phone books, does complex math faster than a calculator. Charlie's first instinct, kidnap him. Use him as leverage to squeeze the money out of the doctors. He throws Raymond into a car and starts driving west to Los Angeles, ready to fight for his inheritance. But, the road changes everything. Raymond won't fly. He memorizes every airline crash in history. So, they drive. Day after day, Raymond's compulsions test Charlie's patience. Same food, same time, same route. But, slowly, Charlie starts noticing things. Raymond remembers every song Charlie sang as a baby. He remembers their shared crib. He remembers [music] things Charlie's own mind erased. Then comes the question, "Why do they call you Rain Man?" Raymond [music] looks at him, "Because when you were little, you couldn't say Raymond.
You called me Rain Man. I was your Rain Man." Charlie freezes. He doesn't remember. But, Raymond never forgot. The truth rips open. Charlie wasn't an only child. He had a brother who protected him, who loved him, who was taken away and locked up because his parents couldn't handle both boys. Charlie spent his whole life thinking he was abandoned. He was, but not by the brother who remembered him. In Vegas, Raymond's brain becomes a weapon. He counts cards flawlessly, wins enough to erase Charlie's debts. But, Charlie isn't playing for money anymore. He's fighting strangers who mock Raymond.
He's learning to wait through Raymond's rituals. He's defending his brother, not because he's useful, but because he's his. The custody hearing ends the way the law requires. Raymond goes back to the institution. For the first time in his life, Charlie doesn't scheme or rage. He just hugs his brother. Raymond pulls back, looks at him, and says the words he's been carrying for decades, "You're my little brother. I'm fine."
Charlie walks out of the building with no inheritance, no lawsuit, and no $3 million, but he has a brother. And for the first time, he has a childhood that actually happened.
