PCOS has been renamed to PMOS (polyendocrine metabolic ovarian dysfunction) to reflect its true nature as a metabolic and endocrine condition rather than just an ovarian cyst disorder, with South Asian women facing particularly high risks of metabolic dysfunction leading to cardiovascular disease and early death; understanding this metabolic basis enables earlier intervention through tools like fasting insulin testing, glucose monitoring, and DEXA scans to assess visceral fat.

PCOS Is Now Being Called PMOS… Here’s Why That MattersHinzugefügt:
Irregular periods? You're fine. Can you get pregnant? Must be unexplained infertility. You're fine.
How can you have diabetes? You're so thin. You're fine. Any of these comments ring a bell? If you're a woman who's been diagnosed with PCOS, some of these may sound familiar. Well, PCOS has now been renamed to PMOS, polyendocrine metabolic ovarian dysfunction. So, it truly reflects the condition of this disease, which is endocrine and metabolic. I kind of wish they left the ovaries out of it because for decades women have been chasing the ovarian cysts and the follicles and doing these surgeries and what do we do about it rather than focusing on the underlying metabolic dysregulation. If you are a South Asian woman, you are doubly at risk. South Asian women have higher rates of metabolic dysfunction leading to cardiovascular disease and early death. So, now that we know what truly is at the heart of the disease, we have a lot of work to do in terms of reversing this chronic condition. What is one thing you're going to take an action on? Maybe put on a glucose monitor. Maybe get a fasting insulin level. Maybe get a DEXA scan to see what your visceral fat is like. I'd love to hear in the comments. Drop it below.
