Film studios often complete scripts for sequels before the current film is released, as demonstrated by Mortal Kombat 3's script being finished while Mortal Kombat 2 was still in production; however, sequel production depends on the current film's box office performance, with a $70 million budget requiring approximately $250-300 million in revenue to justify the investment and warrant a sequel.

Mortal Kombat 3 Script is Finished & Filming UpdateAdded:
The script to Mortal Kombat 3 is finished. So, Mortal Kombat 2 isn't even out. So, why is the script to 3 finished? Well, they're hoping that the film makes money because they want to start production on 3 really soon, which I hope happens. You know, both the things like it's good and 3 starts.
>> [music] >> Mortal Kombat 2 is almost here and people are already talking about Mortal Kombat 3. Well, the good news is we have a pretty significant update on Mortal Kombat 3, which again, as a fan of MK, I'm super excited to see what they can do. So, here's what's going on. The writer of Mortal Kombat 2 and the director have confirmed, and actually they confirmed forever ago, that they were working on MK3 already and that 2 sets the stage for it. Well, the latest update is the script for Mortal Kombat 3 is now complete.
And they're saying that production could start as soon as they're given the thumbs up and the go-ahead because they're all ready. But, let's talk about why it hasn't. Essentially, it boils down to box office. Mortal Kombat 2 has to make money at the box office.
Now, I know that seems like it's a given, but again, we just don't know.
Mortal Kombat is popular, yes. The first film was a hybrid release and we know it did enough to get a sequel, but this film is the one that's going to test the viability and the staying power of Mortal Kombat. The budget is just under $70 million.
So, if we include marketing and everything, this film, it's got to make about $250 million to be, hey, okay, we got something here. $300 million, you're getting a sequel, okay? But, we just don't know.
Now, the fact that they have a script ready and are saying they're ready to go, if this film comes out and makes money, guess what? They're going to be shooting by early next year, if not this fall/winter. They're going to want to get a sequel out faster.
And that's my hopes. But again, I'm hoping that this film is good, first and foremost, and I trust it's going to be great. It can't be Annihilation bad, let's be clear about this, or maybe even the first film in the series levels of bad, which again, I love the first film, don't get me wrong. I watch it once a year, it's a guilty pleasure. It has problems, many of them stemming from Cole and plot armor and stuff, but overall, I like what they're going for.
It looks like this one is fixing a lot of these issues. So, I'm excited. I'm hoping that the film is doing well enough that we can get a potential third. And if it does better than expected, maybe even those TV series spin-offs that they said they want to do cuz how cool would it be to have a shared universe where we could focus on singular characters on the TV side of things that build up towards the next film and their inclusion in a tournament or whatever they're going for. I think that would be awesome. So, let's see how it does and hopefully the film is good enough to bring in audiences. Thank you for checking out that video and thank you for your continued support.
