[00:00:16]Nikita Khrushchev denounces Stalin's crimes to a stunned party congress. He ends the mass executions, releases millions from the gulags, promotes younger officials based on merit, not fear. And for a time it seemed the Soviet Union might actually become human again. But those younger officials are watching, learning. They see how Khrushchev uses party votes to sideline rivals, how he builds coalitions, how he turns the system against itself. In October 1964, they call an emergency meeting while he's on vacation. They use his own democratic procedures against him, vote him out unanimously. He's given a pension and a dacha, told to disappear. He dies forgotten, erased from Soviet history books. The man who tried to democratize tyranny and was destroyed by his own reforms was Nikita Sergeyevich Khrushchev.
