[00:00:58]Sam is off at the TT, so it's actually been a year to the day that we started doing these In-Between Gears episodes.

[00:01:04]So, please make sure you hit like if you want us to keep going. So, on today's episode of In-Between Gears, I It is the second hottest day of the year. It's the Tuesday after the May Bank Holiday. It's going to be about 32° Celsius here for all of you Americans.

[00:01:21][ __ ] knows what that is in Fahrenheit.

[00:01:23]And I have the hottest day of the year plus the busiest day of the year for myself. It's only me and the two newbies, Dustin and Lauren. Dustin has today just a bunch of stuff to get on with and he's going to do a 10 minute or so takeover, maybe a little bit shorter, but we're going to get an American's point of view on the shop and how it's all going and how he's doing.

[00:01:45]And then we'll get some action footage of what I'm doing. So, I've got two services to do this morning on Sportsters. I've got a service on an Evo Ultra Classic. I think that's what it is.

[00:01:58]Uh and then an oil filter change on a Low Rider S this afternoon.

[00:02:04]Also this afternoon, if I can get Lauren brave enough to have a go herself, she's going to take also do also a 10-minute takeover. Okay, so first things first on a Monday morning, what we do is we just get ready.

[00:02:19]Sorry for the noise.

[00:02:21]We just get ready and clean and tidy for the week ahead. Usually Sam's here to uh usually Sam's here to sweep up, but it's uh it's too hot this week. We know how much he loves it, so we're going to save it for next week when he's in. Right now, I'm just going to clean down my ramp.

[00:02:38]Get all my service [ __ ] ready.

[00:02:39]Might empty my bin cuz that looks a bit full. So, what have we been up to since last time? So, last time we went to Santa Pod, which was [ __ ] awesome.

[00:02:55]Yeah, Santa Pod, 13.2 seconds he got down the down the strip, which I think is pretty [ __ ] good for a Sportster.

[00:03:02]Um we're going to go again, I think, around the 20th of June.

[00:03:07]Um and see if we can get into the 12-second mark. Um we've got some tweaking to do. I'm going to get some solid engine mounts. We're going to stiffen up the rear suspension, drop the front suspension, get a seat made to push him forward.

[00:03:21]Uh I think one of the biggest problems he had for launching is as he was accelerating the bike, the whole bike was going like that.

[00:03:30]So, if we can um if we can uh limit that, then he should be able to go faster straight forward. That's the kind of theory behind it. I'm not not being physicist or anything to do with racing.

[00:03:44]That's just my initial thought process.

[00:03:46]I'm open to ideas, so please please comment below. And also, I want a lightweight balanced crank.

[00:03:52]However, I cannot find anybody who does it with Sportsters. So, again, I'm open to ideas. So, please help.

[00:04:08]Some of the other stuff that's been happening is um we've lost a couple of staff members. Chris Ow!

[00:04:19]Chris Chris has left us uh to go for uh early retirement, we think. And Jess has left us to go make her way in the world and head off to university or an apprentice. So, there's two less staff members we've got at the minute.

[00:04:33]>> [snorts] >> Now, with the plans that we've got going forward with the new builds at the top, um to start off with, we're going to need to shrink down.

[00:04:41]Um not a huge deal, but we'll basically have the same downstairs space, but lose all the space we've got upstairs.

[00:04:47]So, I think the plan is at the minute, um before we take anybody else on to fill their gaps, the plan is to I'm back in the workshop, trying not to be full-time, but it seems like pretty much full to full-time at the minute. Um uh and then once we've got the new builds at the top sorted, then we can start growing and carrying on with the the whole plan that was the original idea.

[00:05:52]Which for me authentic, integrity, and [ __ ] badass. And they can't use that again, so they've got to come up with their own.

[00:06:02]Okay, so I'm just uh servicing the Sportster, and anybody who works on Harleys knows what a pain in the ass these chin spoilers are, cuz guess what? The oil filter is right above it, and it basically just acts like a giant scoop, and they're all right. Well, they're not a titty to get on and off, but they're just a pain in the ass to get on and off. So, we have this, and I've never used this before.

[00:06:26]So, I'm hoping this is going to save me a lot of work and hassle. So, this could be quite funny. It was either going to work or it's not, so keep watching.

[00:06:34]This this is either going to be a disaster or going to work really, really well.

[00:08:02]>> Uh, started off at DC Cycles.

[00:08:05]Uh, they taught me basically everything I know about Harleys. Um >> I'm I'm What is DC Cycles? DC Cycles is a Was it a dealership?

[00:08:13]>> Uh, no, it's a performance shop. Uh They do That's mainly all they do now is just performance work. Uh, cams, [music] head work, all that good stuff.

[00:08:22]>> That's dyno tuning for you.

[00:08:23]>> Yeah, they have a dyno machine there as well.

[00:08:25]Um after I left there um me and my friend [music] Drew Phipps, we started our own little shop, King City Choppers. Um >> Small plug there.

[00:08:38]>> And um shortly after that, my wife got orders here, so ended up moving to the UK and working here.

[00:08:47]>> Which he loves every [ __ ] second of.

[00:08:50]>> He's just spoken more in the last 2 minutes there than he ever has the whole 2 months that he's been here.

[00:08:59]>> Who specialize in doing Harley-Davidsons, much like our own. Are they more of a Are they more of a um chopper type shop?

[00:09:07]Or are they more like Cuz we're not We're not a custom bike shop. We're a Harley specialist.

[00:09:11]>> Yeah, it's uh basically the same. Um just work on [music] Harleys. Um but they do custom builds. Or if someone Somebody [music] that wants a chopper, they'll build them one.

[00:09:24]>> From scratch?

[00:09:25]>> Yeah.

[00:09:26]>> Nice. Do they fabricate everything in house?

[00:09:29]>> Uh for the most part, I would say um don't actually make the the frame. We do more of like the welding the hardtail kit on.

[00:09:39]>> Uh-huh.

[00:09:39]>> And then, you know, basically everything else [music] far as making a chopper.

[00:09:43]>> Nice. And they've been going for what, a year, say?

[00:09:47]>> Uh yeah, going on a year now.

[00:09:50]>> And um the biking culture, obviously you being a Missis- Mississippian, is that how you Is that what you are, a Mississippian?

[00:09:59]>> Yeah.

[00:10:00]>> As far as being a Mississippian is concerned, what's the difference in culture you've noticed over here? I know you haven't been out on your bike much over here.

[00:10:07]>> Yeah, I haven't really got the really meet very many people that ride um other than, you know, working here.

[00:10:15]Um I have noticed on the the test rods, at least in the the states, people wave to one another on bikes.

[00:10:26]>> Yeah.

[00:10:26]>> I've noticed that's not the the case here.

[00:10:29]>> So so So there is a massive thing here where people get really upset about waving and not waving. Now, I'll wave if I'm feeling frisky, but the problem is I don't feel like I should have to wave every single time cuz it really pisses me off.

[00:10:42]>> [laughter] >> And when you've got a really busy day and you're like, "Ugh, got to wave.

[00:10:45][clears throat] Got to wave. Got to wave."

[00:10:47]But I mean, each their own.

[00:12:10]>> Hi everyone. My name's Lauren and I've been working at Matchbook Custom [music] for about 4 weeks now. My job is to be looking after the shop.

[00:12:20]I'm completely new to the motorcycle culture. [music] Um so it's really exciting to get involved in this. I currently don't ride. However, I have been asked a lot if I am [music] going to be taking my license. Um so my reply to that is ask me in 6 months and [music] we'll see. I think we've got some new stock in. Um so I'd like to take [music] you on a little tour to show you exactly what's new in the shop.

[00:23:08]Got diabetes in their um I think it was '50s and '60s, type 2 diabetes in >> [snorts] >> And me, I got it in my '40s and I'm like, "What in the fuck?" Cuz cuz my diet's sugar based.
