The Hard Reality of Fish Farming During Drought

[00:00:58]Hi guys, it's a beautiful day once again and welcome back to Dexter's World channel.

[00:01:14]It's been a while that we haven't experienced any rain. It's been 3 months or maybe more. That's 5 months that we haven't experienced this rain from heaven. And this is the phenomenon that we are facing right now because the effect of this have tremendously lessened the interest of the people to breed their fish even to take care of the fish because the water district have uh scarcity of supply of water as well because of this El Nino. So our water reserve has been uh an issue now because we don't have ample supply of water in the pipelines.

[00:02:03]So these are the things that have tremendously affected our business in breeding this tropical fish.

[00:02:26]Well, you know that we are breeding Japanese koi, we are breeding de mollies, we are breeding catfish and uh goldfish and flower horns. So these are the things that you know these things that I have uh uh said earlier the El Nino or this phenomenon have greatly affected our business and you will see that the dried you know fish pan that are here are caused by this extreme heat that we experience every day.

[00:03:06]Imagine we are experiencing 40 to 45° Celsius during this time. And this is the first and the longest time that we actually experience that it really affected our breeding. So the question now is will I stop breeding momentarily? Yes, I will stop breeding fest because the market of this fest had been also sluggish for the past months few months because of the fact that the water pipelines provided by the government have no longer enough sufficient or sufficient supply of water. So this is the reason that I have to temporarily quit breeding this uh type of fish because we cannot grow them.

[00:04:31]The good side of this is that we were able to have this uh mudpan and this mud pan is still uh being uh supplied by the stream that I have always mentioned the from the from the river and we are actually putting in or adding in some uh thousands of gallons of water every day and there is no issue yet. I hope that the rain will really come so that this issue will be uh given solution and uh I am so I'm so fascinated also about the fact that we have been able to uh segregate good breeders. Imagine uh this pond is large, is huge. And we have here uh breeder catfish and also breeder tilapias and also we have this uh breeder Japanese koi save for the goldfish. Of course, we can always get that goldfish from our suppliers from outside of the city. But here in particular in Sambanga city where the place where I live, the city where I am located is actually having troubles and issue about water supply.

[00:06:13]So you will see that the tanks are already drying up and some of them have cracks already because of the extreme heat. That's why I said that I'm praying that's why I'm praying that uh the rain would come so that we will be able to continue on with the business of uh breeding this fish.

[00:06:45]One of the things that a fish breeder would look into, especially if he is going to massively breed, is the vast supply of water. And that's basic because this water is the life of the fish. and not only saying that water but it's a continuous supply of water. It's not enough that we have water today and we don't anymore have water to refill or to make the water parameters good in the couple of days. So continuous supply of water is one of the paramount consideration when you are breeding the fish. Especially if you are conditioning them that you have to frequently change the water so that they will lay their eggs. Especially for the goldfish and other fish like small fish like the mollies and this fighting fish other known otherwise known as the beta fish. They really demand water quality and the water quality as what I've said is the continuous refilling of water with like like for example this pond this this water is coming from the the stream and it's being uh it's being threatened to dry up as well. I hope it will not come. We hope the rain would uh just uh uh come for us. And you will see that it's continuously adding water here and we have an exit pipe over there so that the flow of water will be constant. So during the day we're adding water and it will stop during the night. So 12 hours of adding water is already sufficient to ensure that the water parameters will not be affected by the extreme heat conditions that we experience here.

[00:09:00]So so far so good. I'm not quite worried about the materials that we going to use in the future when we already have the rain because I have kept here some uh good materials for breeding. I have here Japanese corn, we have tilapias, we have also here really uh catfish. That's good material for building uh maybe in the month of November or the month of September when the rain rainy season comes. So far this is a setback I I should say but since we also experienced the lagging of you know we lag behind uh in terms of business of selling fees because of these issues that I have uh mentioned earlier but I am confident that it will uh it will go back it will still continue to go on as a business because many people will not uh or cannot tolerate without uh having fish at home or just an aquarium inside the house.
