New developments tonight in the horrific triple homicide in Southwest Detroit.
Police confirming late Friday afternoon what a source has informed us about already. They have a suspect in custody now in the triple murder of three men whose bodies were found in the basement of a home earlier this week. And we're learning more about two of the victims.
66-year-old Norman Hamlin lived in the home and tonight we're learning 65-year-old Mark Barnett was a Marine veteran. 7 News Detroit reporter Randy Wimbley speaking with Barnett's ex-wife and sharing new details from police about the suspect.
DPD says this triple homicide was an isolated incident and there's no danger to the public. They're reiterating the importance of speaking up after a community tip led them to the suspect now in their custody. The police chief says the suspect and the victims were not strangers. We believe in that the suspect has a connection to the victims.
>> In connection to a triple homicide in Southwest Detroit, the 27-year-old man in their custody is no stranger to law enforcement and is currently on parole.
>> Some of his past offenses offenses include carjacking, armed robbery, felony firearm, fleeing from police, resisting and obstructing. Investigators say they located and arrested him Thursday afternoon working off of that community tip when he was spotted on West Vernor near Michigan Avenue about 7 miles from the scene of the crime.
During the arrest, police also recovered a vehicle they believe may help crack the case.
>> Inside the vehicle, we found evidence that we believe is connected with these homicides.
>> The bodies of 66-year-old Norman Hamlin, 72-year-old William Barrett, and 65-year-old Mark Barnett were discovered Wednesday inside the basement of Hamlin's home on Edsel near Schaefer and I-75. Police say a missing person's report led them to the home and believe the men were killed sometime between Monday evening and Tuesday morning.
>> So, I hate hearing stories like these. I don't I don't know if those three gentlemen up there down there up to no good, but the guy the suspect had priors. He probably shouldn't have even been out on the street. As always, there's always somebody who had multiple multiple multiple arrests. Again, I think three strikes, even if you did a 0.5, would keep some of these people off the street. Let's just say you got What is it?

Get them off the street. I mean, my gosh. Like the Imagine living your whole life, 72, 66, and 65. You make it to those those big ages. You don't make it through all of the the things of life. You get one of you are a veteran. You You went to war and you get killed by some hothead in a basement for whatever reason.
