What Really Lies Beyond Our Universe?
Added:All righty, let's take off. Number one, the wall of light.
Here's the first thing the universe takes away from you. The reason you can't see beyond isn't distance. It's not that your telescopes are too weak or your eyes too small. It's that there is a wall out there and the wall is made of fire. Go back to when the universe was young. Not young like a billion years old. young, like 380,000 years old, a newborn. Back then, everything was hot, dense, and glowing, packed so tight that light couldn't move. Every time a photon tried to travel, it slammed into a loose electron and scattered. The whole universe was a fog, an opaque, blinding fog with no gaps in it in every direction forever. Then it cooled. The temperature dropped below about 3,000° and something clicked. Electrons stopped drifting free and settled into atoms.
The fog cleared all at once across the entire universe. The lights came on and the light could finally fly. And that first burst of freed is still moving right now. It's been traveling for almost 14 billion years and it's still washing over you as you sit there.
We call it the cosmic microwave background, but forget the name. Here's what matters. When you point your best telescope as far out as it can possibly see, you don't find an edge. You find that wall, that ancient glowing moment when the fog lifted. It surrounds you on all sides like the inside of a shell.
And here's the part that should make the back of your neck cold. That wall is not a place. It's a time. You're not looking at the edge of space out there. You're looking at the edge of the past. The beyond you were picturing isn't in front of you. It's behind you. 13 billion years behind you. And it's on fire.
You've even seen it. If you're old enough to remember analog television, that's snow on the screen between channels. About one out of every hundred of those flexcks was this exact light.

And if the wall is the edge of what we can see, the obvious question is what's pushing against it from the other side. Turns out something is. Number two, the dipole repeller.
You'd think whatever lies beyond would leave us alone. sit out there quietly minding its own business on the far side of a wall we can't cross. It doesn't.
Something out beyond the reachable universe has its hand on your galaxy right now and it's shoving. Here's how we know. Our whole neighborhood, the Milky Way, Andromeda, the little swarm of galaxies we drift with, is moving, not slowly. You are being carried through space at about 600 kilometers every single second, measured against the ancient light of that wall we just talked about. That's fast enough to cross the entire United States in about 8 seconds. And for decades, nobody could fully explain why.
Then in 2017, a team led by an astronomer named Yehuda Hoffman mapped the flow of thousands of galaxies and found the answer.
Half of the pull comes from exactly where you'd expect, a colossal crowd of galaxies called the Shappley concentration, dragging us toward it with sheer gravity. But the other half comes from the opposite direction, and it comes from nothing, a vast empty region where there are almost no galaxies at all. They named it the dipole repeller. And that word repeller is the strange part because emptiness isn't supposed to push. Gravity pulls.
It doesn't shove. So how does a hole in the universe push you away? Think of it like this. You're floating in the exact middle between a crowded city and an empty desert. The city has more stuff, so it pulls harder and you start drifting toward it. From your point of view, it feels like the desert is pushing you away. It isn't really. It just pulls less than everything else.
The void doesn't have a force. It has an absence of force. And in a universe balanced on gravity, an absence is enough to move a galaxy. So, the beyond isn't passive scenery. There is a great nothing out there, too, and too big to ignore. And it is quietly deciding which way you fall. You feel it every second. you just can't feel it.
Now, hold on to that idea of a boundary you can feel but can't reach because the next one is a wall that's coming for you.
Number three, the cosmic event horizon.
There are two edges to the universe and almost everyone confuses them. The first one you already met, the wall of light, the edge of what we can see into the past.
That edge is growing. Every year, a little more of the ancient universe drifts into view. The second edge is the one that matters, and it's doing the opposite. It's closing in. You've heard that the universe is expanding. What you might not have heard is that it's expanding faster and faster. Something we call it dark energy, mostly because we needed a name for it, is pressing on the fabric of space and stretching it at an accelerating rate. And when expansion accelerates, it draws a line around you, a point of no return. Physicists call it the cosmic event horizon. It works like the edge of a waterfall. Imagine you're a fish in a river and downstream the water is picking up speed toward a drop.
There's a line in that river where the current finally beats your top swimming speed. Cross it and no matter how hard you swim back, you're going over. You can still see upstream. You just can't ever get there again. Space has a line exactly like that. Beyond it, the expansion of the universe is carrying everything away faster than light itself can fight the current. A galaxy that crosses that line can shine as bright as it wants. Its light will never reach you. Not in a billion years, not in a trillion. Not ever. It's gone, sealed off on the far side of a boundary that light cannot climb. And here's the twist that makes it personal. That horizon isn't out at the edge of the visible universe. It's much closer than the wall of light. It sits around us. And as the expansion speeds up, it draws inward, tightening like a noose in slow motion.
Galaxies we can see perfectly well tonight are already doomed. Already sliding toward the line, already scheduled to vanish.
You are inside a shrinking circle of things you're allowed to touch. And beyond that circle is a beyond that grows a little larger every night made of everything the universe is taking away from you. Which raises the question of how much it's taking. The answer is almost everything. Number four, the great isolation.
The universe is deleting itself slowly, quietly. one galaxy at a time and there's nothing anyone can do to stop it. Right now, above your head, there are something like two trillion galaxies. An unthinkable crowd. But most of them are already lost to you. Because of that accelerating expansion, roughly 94% of the galaxies you can currently see are already beyond reach. You can watch their old light arriving, but you could never travel to them, never signal them, never touch them, even if you left this instant at the speed of light and never stopped. They're photographs of places that no longer belong to us. And it's getting worse by the second. Every year, about 160 billion stars cross that event horizon and slip out of our reach forever. 160 billion. Not dying, just leaving. Carried off by the swelling of space. One silent departure after another while you sleep. Fast forward far enough and the sky empties out completely.
Every galaxy that isn't nailed to us by gravity, every distant spiral, every faint smudge recedes past the horizon and winks out. What's left is only our own little bound family. the Milky Way, Andromeda, and their handful of companions, which by then will have collided and merged into a single vast blob of stars. Some people call that future galaxy Milka.
It's an ugly name for a lonely thing.
Picture standing on a world in that era.
You look up and there is one galaxy, yours, and around it in every direction, perfect black. No. No Andromeda, no distant lights, no fuzzy smudges to squint at. Just your island of stars floating in an ocean with no other shore. That's not science fiction.
That's the default future of this universe baked in by the physics we already measure. The beyond isn't a farway shore. It's a rising tide and the whole sky is drowning in it. But losing the view is not the worst part. The worst part is what those future stargazers won't know. Number five, the end of cosmology.
Here's a thought that keeps a certain kind of scientist up at night. We might be living in the only good moment to understand the universe. And that moment is closing.
In 2007, two physicists named Lawrence Krauss and Robert Sharer worked out what the cosmos will look like to astronomers in the deep future. A trillion years from now, long after the great isolation is complete, and what they found is quietly devastating. By then, every other galaxy is gone past the horizon.
The wall of light, that ancient fire, has been stretched so far by expansion that it's faded into undetectable nothing. The evidence that the universe is expanding at all, gone. The glow left over from the big bang gone. The red shift of distant galaxies that first told us the cosmos was growing. Gone because there are no distant galaxies left to measure. So imagine a scientist in that era. She's brilliant. She's careful. She builds perfect telescopes and does everything right. She looks out and she sees one galaxy, her own, sitting in an empty, unchanging black.
And with every honest tool at her disposal, she reaches the obvious conclusion. The universe is a single galaxy, static, eternal. It was always here, and it always will be. She'll be completely wrong, and there will be no way, none, for her to know it. Every clue that could have told her the truth, the wall of light, the fleeing galaxies, the whole story of the Big Bang, will have been carried beyond her horizon before she was ever born. The universe will have erased its own birth certificate. Let that settle. It means evidence has an expiration date. It means the truth about where everything came from is not a permanent feature of reality. It's a temporary one visible only from a narrow window in time and we happen to be sitting in that window right now. Blink cosmically speaking and it's gone. So one thing that lies beyond the universe is knowledge itself. The answers are out there slipping over the edge and they are not coming back. which almost makes you wonder if there's a beyond at all or if space just folds back on itself and there was never an outside to reach.
Number six, the universe that wraps around.
Here's a possibility that sounds like a cheap trick but is deadly serious science. Maybe there's no beyond because if you flew straight out far enough long enough, you'd eventually arrive back home back at Earth. coming in from the opposite direction. To see how that's even possible, you have to separate two things your brain keeps gluing together.
One is the shape of space up close, whether it curves like a ball or lies flat like a table. The other is the shape of space as a whole, how it's connected, whether it has edges, whether it loops. Physics pins down the first one pretty well. The second one, it barely constrains at all. And a universe can be finite without having an edge.
You already know a version of this. The surface of the earth is finite, only so many square miles. But you can walk it forever and never fall off. There's no wall, no edge, no beyond. Walk east long enough and you come back around to where you started. Now take that trick and give it to all of space. Fly out past the last galaxy. keep going in a dead straight line and one day your descendants watch the Milky Way rise ahead of them, not a copy. The real one, the one you left. If that's the shape of things, then the beyond is a joke the universe is playing on you. There's nothing out there because out there is a loop and every direction is a road home.
like an old arcade game where flying off the right edge of the screen just brings you back in from the left. We've actually looked for this. If space wraps around, then that wall of light should show repeating patterns. The same patch of ancient sky stamped in two different directions like seeing the back of your own head, matched circles in the sky. So far, nobody's found a clean set of them.
But, and this is the part from a 2024 study by a group called the Compact Collaboration, that absence does not rule it out. A wrapped around finite universe is still very much on the table. It just has to be big enough that the loop is longer than the part we can see.
So maybe nothing lies beyond the universe. Maybe Beyond just bends around and points back at you. That's almost comforting.
The next one is not number seven. The big rip. Up to now, the beyond has been something out there. A wall, a void, a horizon, a loop. This one is different.
In this future, the beyond comes to you.
It reaches in, gets between your atoms, and pulls you apart.
Remember dark energy, the thing stretching space faster and faster.
We've been assuming it stays polite, constant, steady, the same tomorrow as today. But we don't actually know that.
And in 2003, three physicists, Robert Caldwell, Mark Cameonowski, and Nevin Weinberg, asked a simple, horrifying question. What if dark energy isn't constant? What if it's getting stronger?
They called that possibility phantom energy and they followed it to the end.
If dark energy keeps growing, the expansion of space doesn't just accelerate, it runs away. It becomes infinite at a specific finite moment and everything everything comes apart.
Here's how the last day feels in their scenario. For most of cosmic history, nothing seems wrong. Then in the final stretch, maybe 22 billion years from now, the tearing begins and it works its way inward from the largest things to the smallest, like a zipper coming undone. First, the great clusters of galaxies unbind and drift into the growing dark. Then, tens of millions of years from the end, your own galaxy is peeled apart, its stars scattered. A few months before the end, the solar system lets go. The planets simply float away from the sun, no longer held. With about 30 minutes left, the Earth itself is pulled to gravel. Its rock and iron unable to resist the space swelling inside it. And in the final splinter of a second, smaller than you can imagine, it reaches the atoms. your atoms, every particle you're made of, torn away from every other as the space between them grows without limit. You wouldn't burn.
You wouldn't freeze. You'd just come apart gently and completely as the beyond opened up inside your own body.
Is this really coming? Honestly, we don't know. It depends on the exact behavior of dark energy. And recent measurements from a survey called Desai have started to hint that dark energy might be changing over time, which is exactly the door this nightmare walks through. So, the jury is out. But the fact that it's even possible tells you something. The beyond might not be a place you travel to. It might be a thing that arrives. And if space itself can grow without limit, that raises a much bigger question. How big is it really?
Number eight, the flatness knife edge.
Everything we've measured says the universe is flat. And that one boring sounding word might mean it goes on forever. When cosmologists say flat, they don't mean like a pancake. They mean the geometry of space follows the rules you learned in school. Parallel lines stay parallel. The angles of a triangle add up the way they're supposed to. Light travels straight.
The universe didn't have to be like that. It could have curved like the surface of a giant sphere or flared open like a saddle. Those are real options.
And each one tells a different story about how big everything is. So we measured it. The plank spacecraft mapped that wall of ancient light in exquisite detail and the verdict came back. The universe is flat. Not roughly flat. Flat to within about half a percent. As far as we can tell, space is level to a precision that would embarrass a carpenter. And here's why that word should unsettle you. In the simplest reading of the physics, a flat universe is an infinite one. Not vast, not huge, infinite. Endless in every direction with an endless number of galaxies going on with no edge and no end forever.
If that's true, then everything you've ever seen, the two trillion galaxies, the entire observable universe, 93 billion lightyear across is not most of it. It's not even a little of it. It's a single grain of sand on a beach with no far end. That's what lies beyond in this answer. More. Endlessly more. so much more that the word beyond stops meaning anything because there's no wall for it to be beyond. Now, I'll be honest with you. The way a good guide should, it's not airtight. When you look at some of the plank data on its own, it actually leans ever so slightly the other way toward a universe that curves gently closed and finite. After all, it's a small tension, an argument scientists are still having, but hold the two possibilities in your head at once because together they're the real horror. Either the universe is finite and we can't find its edge, or it's infinite and there is no edge. Either way, you will never ever see the end of it. And if you can't measure the outside, maybe there's a reason. Maybe the books simply don't balance the way you think. Number nine, the zero energy universe.
Here's a question that sounds childish until you realize nobody can answer it easily.
Where did all of this come from? All the matter, all the light, all the two trillion galaxies. Where did the universe get the sheer stuff to be a universe? The unsettling answer some physicists give is maybe it didn't need any. Maybe the whole thing adds up to nothing. Follow this carefully because it's one of the strangest ideas in all of science. On one side of the ledger, you have all the positive energy in existence. Every atom, every star, every scrap of matter and radiation, an almost unimaginable amount. But on the other side of the ledger, there's gravity. And gravity, it turns out, counts as negative energy. Every time two things pull on each other across space, that attraction goes into the books as a minus. Now add it all up. The positive energy of everything that exists plus the negative energy of all the gravity holding it together. And when you do the sum as best anyone can, the two sides may cancel. the total energy of the entire universe might be exactly zero. A physicist named Edward Tryan suggested this back in 1973 and it leads somewhere dizzying because if the universe's grand total is zero, then making a universe doesn't actually cost anything. There's no law of physics that says you can't create something as long as the books still balance at nothing.
You didn't break the bank. You never spent a scent. Alan Guth, one of the great cosmologists, put it perfectly.
The universe, he said, might be the ultimate free lunch. Sit with what that implies. If the total is zero, then the universe needs no outside supply to draw from, no cosmic warehouse it was shipped from, no beyond it borrowed itself from.
It could balance on nothing because it is in the deepest accounting nothing.
nothing that got creative and split itself into a plus and a minus and spent 14 billion years pretending to be a lot.
And once you're willing to say the universe might not need an outside at all, you've arrived at the strangest answer on this whole list. The one where the question falls apart in your hands.
Number 10, there is no outside.
Here's where I have to stop leading you toward a place and admit something. For this whole journey, you and I have both been picturing a beyond, a somewhere else, a location on the far side of the wall. And the honest mainstream physics answer might be that there is no such place and there never was. And the question itself is built wrong. Think about what people usually mean when they say the universe is expanding. You picture it swelling into some surrounding room, like a balloon filling a space that was empty before. But that's not what's happening. The expansion is not the universe growing into anything. It's space itself stretching from the inside everywhere at once. New distance appearing between galaxies that already exist. There is no room it's expanding into. The room is what's expanding. And the same goes for the beginning. The Big Bang was not an explosion at a point out in some pre-existing emptiness throwing debris into a void that was waiting. The Big Bang happened everywhere. It happened right where you're sitting and out at that wall of light and in every direction, all at the same instant.
Because back then, everywhere was the same place. There was no outside for it to bang into. So when you ask what lies beyond the universe, a physicist can look at you and without being glib tell you the question may have no meaning.
It's like standing at the North Pole and asking someone to point you north.
There's no direction left. You've run out of north. Not because it's hidden, not because it's far away, but because at that spot the concept simply stops applying.
That's the turn this whole video has been walking toward. The universe isn't a thing sitting inside a bigger nothing.
As far as our best physics can tell, the universe is all the space there is, all the room there is, all the wear there is. And beyond all the wear there is, isn't a hard place to reach. It's not a place at all. Which leaves one final quieter question. If some of these answers are real but forever out of reach, the wall we can't cross, the horizon closing in, the truth expiring, then what is it exactly that keeps us from ever knowing for sure? Number 11, the boundary of the knowable.
Here's the last thing that lies beyond the universe, and it's the one you can't argue your way past. It isn't a wall of fire or a hungry void or a loop in space. It's a boundary on knowing itself. And it isn't a gap in our tools.
It's built into the universe on purpose.
[snorts] Put together everything we've walked through. There's a horizon closing in, sealing off galaxies where light can never again reach us. There's the great isolation carrying the evidence away stars at a time. There's the end of cosmology.
where the truth about the Big Bang expires and leaves no trace. Each of those isn't just something we haven't figured out yet. It's something we are physically forbidden from ever figuring out.
That's a different kind of unknown than you're used to. Most mysteries are things we don't know yet. Puzzles waiting for a smarter person or a bigger telescope. This is something else. This is a set of answers that are not merely undiscovered, but permanently unreachable, walled off by the very expansion of space. Close the way a door is closed when there's no longer a room on the other side. No future genius solves it.
No instrument gets there. The information has left and it is not coming back. So, we are sealed in. Not by ignorance, but by physics, living inside a bubble of the knowable, watching its walls draw slowly inward, holding the strange privilege of being alive at the one moment when the most of it can still be seen. Everyone who comes after us will see less. And the answers to what's truly beyond, beyond the wall, beyond the horizon, beyond the loop, are on the far side of a line that light and therefore knowledge cannot cross. So what really lies beyond our universe?
Not a place, not a wall you could touch, not a door you could open. What lies beyond is the edge of what a mind trapped inside a growing universe is ever permitted to see. And the quiet fact that you are already standing about as close to that edge as anyone ever
