I put a 183MM CANNON in a Tank Destroyer! | Sprocket

[00:00:00]Hello everybody and welcome back. It's the only Sprocket YouTuber who mostly seems to play Forsa Horizon 6 at the moment and I am playing some more Sprocket which is definitely a break in the ordinary for me. It is also incredibly warm in my room right now because I have a new house and the insulation is good and it is warm outside which means it's even warmer inside. That said, I'm going to get straight to building so that I can turn my very powerful fan that's pointed directly at my face on and pretend that I am an aircraft in a wind tunnel. So, I will see you in the future. All right, the fan's on weak for this audio recording. So, hopefully you can't hear it too much. It is a new fan, so the bearing is still alive, but um you know, it's slightly cooler than it was the other day. Like 3° cooler. not really enough to make it uh a nice office to be in right now. You know, I'd much rather be anywhere else in my house than the room with the gaming PC in it. But there you go. Here we are. Um this is going to be a fun little build, which ends up in quite possibly the most ridiculous tank I've built in quite a while. somehow. I didn't actually think it would be the case, but this is well, it was originally going to be a band cannon one kind of thing, like a an indirect fire artillery self-propelled piece. Um, and it was going to carry a pretty beefy gun, but it was all going to be kind of uh thinly armored, not able to do much in terms of fighting enemy tanks. But it seems that I lost the plot at a certain point and it just became a tank destroyer. So now it's just a tank destroyer. Um there were a couple of spoilers posted in my posts channel on YouTube if you haven't seen those and that is it's got some people thinking and most people seem to think it's an AMX 13105.

[00:01:58]Uh I've had a couple people say it's got a 57 mm gun. you're not quite there. Um, it has a 183 mm gun, which is just a little bit bigger if the experts are to be believed. And I think in this case, as an English man, I can safely proclaim that 183 mm is definitely a sensible caliber for a gun and we should put it in a barn and call that a tank. And that is how we roll here in Old Blighty.

[00:02:27]Also, our country entirely shuts down at a temperature that would be completely normal anywhere else. But you know uh so be it. I will have absolutely no problems in admitting that I am simply weak. But I am weak right now and I have lost all of the sense that I had in my head one time. And you know what I've forgotten to say? I forgot to say subscribe. That's something. And that's going to hit the numbers real bad forgetting to say it in the first 2 minutes because it does. It really does.

[00:02:56]Genuinely there is like a massive impact that you can notice. And you know, anyone else could just go back and re-record it, but not me. That's not how I roll. This is a one take and done kind of deal. It's not at all. There's a thousand and one times where I stammer and stutter and just give up and start again. I think every single video probably has about 10 versions of it where at the start of it, I say hello and that's it. That's just the whole recording. And I have to listen to them back sometimes because I forget which ones were the actual ones I went with.

[00:03:27]And I'm just like, that's not me speaking. That's someone else speaking through my head, right? There's no way that I'm that bad at English. But no, there you go. I am actually that bad at English. Anyway, um I don't really know what era this tank ended up looking like it's from. It's got elements from obviously like the AMX13's era, which is like Cold War relatively early on. Um, and then it's also got elements of more like 80s90s tank design almost. Maybe not quite that new, but you know, it it kind of combines early Cold War and late Cold War. So, I don't really know. Maybe you've got an idea of what this could be, what this stupid thing actually is.

[00:04:13]And look, look, look, look, look. All of you asked how to make an oscillating turret. There it is on your screen right now. Skip back if you were tabbed out and you didn't see it and suddenly you were panicking thinking I want to know how to make an oscillating turret.

[00:04:25]That's how you do it. You put a mantlet on your kind uh on your base turret which is the one that going to give you your horizontal traverse. And then that mantlet is where you build the entirety of your top turret. So the actual turret turret is that tiny little ring bit at the bottom. And this whole bit that I'm building right now on screen that is all just the mantler. And that means that you can just mount the gun straight to it because I mean that's how an oscillating turret works. The turret moves, the gun does not move in relative to the turret, which allows you to get an easier auto loader in there. It allows you to basically put that cannon closer to the top of the turret, if that makes sense. That's desirable if you don't want to poke much of your tank over a hill. You can imagine how little tank is actually needed to be shown for this thing to fire. And in theory, you could get some pretty decent gun depression out of an oscillating turret.

[00:05:18]However, with the way that this thing is designed, it doesn't get good depression, nor does it get good elevation. But that's mostly because I am not a very good tank designer.

[00:05:30]I've been doing this for a long time, but by no stretch of the imagination does that mean that I am good. Sometimes I think the things that I build are fun, but I feel like good and fun are extremely mutually exclusive terms. A lot of the time you just you design something and you're like, "Wow, I'm really glad I designed that. I that's such a cool design, but you think about it for 2 seconds and you're like, "Yeah, no, I can see why no one's built anything like that." Especially with some of the land ships. I mean, goodness gracious me.

[00:06:02]This doesn't qualify as like a particularly heavy tank, but for the category of vehicle that it is, which is basically just a self-propelled gun, I got to say it's some simultaneously very heavy and very light. It has absolutely no side, top, or bottom armor at all, but it does have an actually decent amount of frontal armor. So, in my head, this is basically like the S tank if it wasn't hydrononeumatic. If you think, follow along with me here. You've probably already lost a little brain cell thinking about what I just said.

[00:06:42]But my idea here is that this would effectively get into position, get ready to fire, pre- aim at a position, and as soon as it is fired, it would just run. That's all it would do.

[00:06:56]And it could take a shot on the front if it had to, but the idea is it wouldn't need to. And that's why the sides and the back don't have any armor because in theory you've gotten long out of dodge.

[00:07:08]And there's also this massive big old gun on there. What I should probably have actually put on this thing is like a hefty optical rangefinder cuz that would be pretty fun. Although depending on what we decide is the logical era for this tank to be built in, there might already have laser rangefinders or things that are slightly more advanced than basically a couple of mirrors and working out the parallax, which is what I was suggesting there, but maybe maybe they don't. I don't really know when laser rangefinders became a thing to be entirely honest. um you know that you can make do with normal rangefinders or make up for the difference with numbers.

[00:07:49]And I'm sure that would definitely be feasible. I mean 183 mm in terms of guns in the world isn't actually that big. We put much bigger guns on ships. Way way way bigger guns on ships. Closing in even on the 500 mm. I mean did we didn't build anything that was quite 500 mm. We built 18in guns. Japan built an 18.1 in gun and that I think is the biggest gun that was put on an active warship. I think they test fired a 20-in gun if I'm not mistaken. And there were some smooth boore breach loading cannons before we had uh not breach loading, muzzle loading cannons long before we had, you know, sensible guns like the ones that we put on our battleships where we could lower the caliber and get more penetration out of them. Uh, right now is the guilty admission part of the video. Um, there is a second part of this build, I will admit, and it was about the same amount of time, but in terms of actually recorded footage, what I did was I sat down the next day, I pressed record, and then I decided I needed a drink. And I went to get the drink and I forgot to unpause it. So, you got about 2 minutes of building and then cut to it basically being finished and about 30 seconds more building. So, what I've done is I've got rid of that at all. So, you're about to get jump scared by a bunch of greles suddenly appearing on the tank. So, uh enjoy that. Anyway, it's done now. Bye. And here we have the finished product. It is definitely uh interesting vehicle.

[00:09:24]Um I lost count of how many times I changed my mind with things on this, but it's kind of kept the vague theme of what I was going for. And what I just will do now is since I record the uh fast forward section after this, I'll just pretend that this was always what I planned to do and not tell you what I didn't plan to do, which is this. What?

[00:09:45]That didn't make any sense. Anyway, put simply, uh this is a very very big gun and uh it does very very big bad things to enemy tanks. So that is obviously a uh quite reasonably armored tank for the end of World War II. And this is a pretty bad angle to go through that front hull.

[00:10:06]It doesn't have any problems. As you can see, 304 mm of penetration. And the armor is it's okay. It's all right. There's bits that aren't good. I don't know. It might do. All right. Let's go find out, shall we? Actually, hang on. I've just got to Okay, I have actually remembered to armor this bit. Sometimes they just blast clean through the hole in the middle here. So, I'm just going to trust that they probably won't because um I'm too lazy to fill that in right now. So, let's see how this does. Also, that is I should have named that something better.

[00:10:42]And answer me honestly, would it be a sprocket video if we didn't do a fields run? We're just It's It's the rules. We have to uh I I don't know this new transmission update. I think there is a little bug with it because sometimes if you start turning in neutral, you just keep one of your tracks always in neutral until you hit exactly zero and then it will change both gears to neutral. You can go again. So, if we do run into that, I might get very confused and struggle. Um, but I I think this is a decent transmission for the vehicle.

[00:11:17]It's not that powerful of an engine, so we're not too quick, but it's not too bad. I think the armor should be all right so long as I stay hauled down. So, I'm going to try and get into a bit of a better spot than we are in right now.

[00:11:30]Okay, light tanks over there. We should have a pretty decent shell velocity, but what we definitely don't have is good reload or for that matter that much ammo. So, ah, just straight away straight away the gun. Okay, it turns out I could be bothered to do that because otherwise my gun just breaks.

[00:11:50]And I'm hoping that it doesn't break if they shoot just at the barrel because that is, you know, going to be a bit of a problem when my tank is 90% cannon barrel. Okay, I think what we did last time was actually quite decent. So, I'm going to aim to do basically just the same thing, but now with that little fix on the cannon, hopefully we're not going to get our cannon knocked out. And every other part of the tank was doing pretty good, apart from the gearbox. But I I I don't know what to do about the gearbox.

[00:12:21]So, uh I'm just going to accept that one as a skill issue and move on. Come on.

[00:12:26]Come on. Okay, that's my track. That's just the second worst thing that could happen, I think. Um, come on. Please, please rotate. No. Okay, we're just stuck here. I can still shoot back. Are you kidding me, man? I swear I cannot catch a break in this damn level, can I?

You're trying to potshot me back. I don't think so, Sunshine. What about one of those? All I need is one hit. He probably needs to get a really good spot to kill me. No, really. That's still not it. What about here? Maybe.

I just cannot apparently catch a break in terms of a random shot getting into one of the tiny little weak spots on this thing, which the AI seems incredibly good at doing. Uh or alternatively, they just take out my tracks, which I can't really do anything about because that's they they they got to be on the outside, otherwise they well they wouldn't be touching the ground, you know. No stopping to shoot, nothing. We're just getting straight down into the valley and I know my tracks about to be taken off. I just I just feel it, you know? I can feel it in my bones. Hello there. I'm going to have to hit on the move here, which is unreliable at best, but we don't really have much of a choice. I don't think that's killed him.

Stop that heavy tank there. Do you reckon I could just Do you reckon I could just, you know, over the little just just Yes, I could. Look at that. It's very rare for me that a plan comes together.

[00:20:00]But that actually kind of worked. And now my gearbox is going to go horribly wrong and not let me drive forwards, which Oh, I'm calm. It's fine. I like not being able to drive up small hills.

[00:20:11]That's good. Oh, well, now one track's in neutral and the other tracks in forwards, right? Please, let's just tell me. No, no, no. He's fine. Of course he is.

[00:21:09]Right. I feel like this tank operates like the Russian war machine. It takes a little while to get going, but once it gets going, it's kind of rubbish. Hi, buddy. [00:21:33]This shouldn't need a cut. To be fair, it looks like this guy's trying to move and he's moving at about the same speed as I am right now. So, between the two of us, we make one half decent snail pace. Hello. Right. Please, please, just give me the victory. Oh, I really thought he'd lived there. I was about to cry if he just killed my tank. What's even left? Surely I have blown everything on this map to smitherines by now. You're dead. I I don't know. Do I have to drive? I think I'm going to have to drive into the circle to get my little victory condition. Oh, right.

So, I would like to just get into a position where I can confidently shoot him. And I don't think I need to go around the side. I just need to get the shot first. And that's all I really need to do. I think cuz I've got 300 odd mm of penetration and I don't think it has that much armor. It does have a lot. Hi, bud. Right. Please. Yeah, he fluffed it.

[00:23:35]Number one, we're not in budget. Number two, I am not shooting anti-tank guns with a 183 mm gun. No, we're moving on to defense.

[00:23:45]All right, how many do I get? Uh, looks like I have three of these things. I'm hoping the AI can actually use the gun cuz it's not actually a guarantee. I'll level with you. Um, our side armor is bad. Our front armor is okay.

[00:24:03]Our reload is really bad, but if we hit, we should kill. So, it's going to be interesting to see who comes out on top here. That looks like a good shot. Yep, we're still making the enemies jump. Ah, you over there, right? Uh, that maybe is too high. That's too high. Why are we just slowly rotating? Oh, hello. I've tested this gun on you before, haven't I? That Yep. He's still going, though. Look at him. He's so determined.

[00:25:07]He's gone. No, I just lost a crew member or two. That's not good at all. I don't know who is even left on the enemy team now. Is that who is you're shooting you?

[00:25:23]Okay. Yeah, that makes sense. Let's go for there. It's a very long range. Not quite that far.

[00:25:32]Oh, man. Right. What I'm going to do is that is one of the weak spots. So, we're going to add some internal armor to cover this off. Cuz if they go through that vent, it's pretty much lights out for this tank. If I put in a plate inside the tank here, which spans that kind of width, and then cuz we've got the room, we can angle it down a bit like so. If we make that, I don't know, like 150 mil just block of steel.

[00:26:15]Suddenly, if they go through this vent, they shouldn't hit our ammo rack. So, that might make us a little bit more survivable. Come on. Come on. Surely.

[00:26:29]Oh, it's so hard to aim this gun, man.

[00:26:38]That guy is making a break for it in the distance. But we got to focus on the people in front of me. Okay, he's gone.

[00:26:45]Maybe we don't need to focus on the people in front of me. What if I swap to you? You're the one who keeps dying to him. So, if I play this tank, we might get some more luck. He is so so fast. So fast. I think I'm up against the map border, so I can't turn or reverse or anything. Come on. There we go. Surely he is toast now. Hello.

[00:27:19]What is shooting me from the left? I know you're in front of me. There's something even further left, I think.

[00:27:25]And that scares me. Why? This gun feels like it drops so much. And then the AI just mogging on me by absolutely deleting the enemies that I just missed really badly. You don't got to do that to me. Come on. Right, you gone. Surely.

[00:27:42]Oh, and then they hit them as well. So, someone's wasted a reload. Right. You out. Someone's killed him. It wasn't me.

[00:27:50]I actually bounced. You are a problem.

[00:27:53]You're already dead. Good. Good. We love that. We love you being dead. Uh 3 seconds till a reload. This guy's so quick. I'm going to guess like No. Well, I think the lead was good, but uh we're screwed. We're screwed. We've lost already. I can just sense it. Something bad is about to happen to this tank.

[00:28:17]That's not English. Yo, I can't hit you at all. I suck. I'm getting shot directly from the right. Yep. There we go. It's happening. And I can't get anywhere to help. And you're still in.

[00:28:32]Actually, can you do anything about the guy on the hill? Neither of you look like you should be able to shoot. But there was definitely a shot coming from over there. I don't even know. You are still in. Oh, I'm going to wait 7 million years to reload again and then fluff the shot massively. What about there? You know, back in the old days, I would have ricocheted off the ground and killed him.

[00:28:58]Bring it back here. Come on. Yeah. No. I have I just redirected him. No. Okay, I did actually kill him. You're so far away. Look at you in the distance. Oh my goodness me. Right. Please tell me this hits.

[00:29:16]Yes. Oh my goodness me. We actually hit now. Luckily, one of my fuel tanks is damaged, but I do have two. Uh, I've got one in the front as well as that back one that was hit. So, we do still have enough fuel to move about. And I'm gonna I'm I'm doing it. I'm doing it. The only guy who doesn't look outwardly dead is him. And I shot him. And so, because I don't want to think that anyone is left alive, and I don't think there's anyone left alive, I'm calling that good. I think we've won. It's not given me a victory screen, but when was the last time we actually got a victory screen?

[00:29:55]Really, if you think about it, I think we've done plenty in this tank and I don't want to drive it anymore. I hope you like this one.
