The packaging promises you something rare. Earth-tone labels, the word artisan, copy that evokes hand-harvested craftsmanship and centuries of mountain tradition. The procurement reality destroys that promise in one sentence.
The grocery chain does not operate a mine, does not maintain a relationship with a single source, and does not commission its own laboratory verification. They license a label. They apply it to whichever bulk pink salt wins the quarterly procurement contract.

Independent lab testing returned 290 parts per billion of lead and 91 parts per billion of arsenic. Redmond has published some testing documentation, which puts them ahead of most brands on transparency.
The domestic sourcing is genuine. The numbers are also genuine, and they don't tell the same story as the label. When your brand name is the word real, the lab results need to be real, too. That's number five. Number four charges you premium prices while pulling from the same bulk supply chain as everything you've seen so far.
Kirkland promises Costco's purchasing power is buying you better salt. The warehouse club quality standard member pricing that means premium sourcing without the markup. Costco operates on rotating supplier contracts. The pink salt in your Kirkland grinder today may not come from the same mine, the same processor, or the same geological zone as the bag you bought 18 months ago.
Costco doesn't publish heavy metal panels per batch. The salt is sourced for unit cost and visual color consistency. So, it looks the same regardless of which supplier won the last procurement round. You're paying a premium positioning price on a product chosen by cost efficiency parameters.

In February 2026, independent third-party laboratory testing found detectable lead, cadmium, mercury, and arsenic in Sherpa Pink Himalayan Salt from San Francisco Salt Company. All four, the complete panel. Every metal the test looks for. The brand has not revised its marketing language since those results were published, not one word. The premium positioning is unchanged. The artisan copy is unchanged. The pricing hasn't moved. The Amazon listing hasn't changed. The lab report was published by an independent toxicology researcher with zero commercial affiliation to any competing salt brand, and it is publicly available to anyone who looks for it.
