Haloalkanes can be formed through multiple methods: (1) Halogenation of alkanes where hydrogen atoms are replaced by halogens (e.g., CH4 + Cl2 → CH3Cl → CH2Cl2 → CHCl3 → CCl4); (2) Reaction of alcohols with concentrated HCl in the presence of anhydrous ZnCl2 (Lucas reagent) to form chloroalkanes; (3) Reaction of alcohols with HBr to form bromoalkanes; (4) Reaction of alcohols with HI to form iodoalkanes; (5) Reaction of alcohols with PCl3 or PCl5 to form chloroalkanes; (6) Darzen reaction using SOCl2 with pyridine; (7) Addition of polar molecules to asymmetric alkenes following Markovnikov's rule (negative part attaches to carbon with fewer hydrogens) or Anti-Markovnikov's rule (with peroxide, negative part attaches to carbon with more hydrogens).
