Consensus Doesn't Mean Truth (here's why)

They were systematically and even confidently wrong. Take the scientist Alfred Wegener for instance. In 1912, he proposed that the continents were slowly moving. That Africa and South America, for instance, had once been joined together. However, the response from the scientific establishment wasn't simply skepticism.

He was dismissed, ridiculed, and died never seeing his idea accepted. Yet, 30 years later, plate tectonics became the foundational theory of modern geology, and every scientist who had laughed at him had simply been too deep inside their own framework to see what was right in front of them. And that's Kuhn's point. You see, consensus doesn't mean correct. It might just mean everyone is trapped in the same assumptions.
