Rhino beetle larvae (Enzylotropes philippinensis peregrinus) undergo significant weight loss during the pupa chamber construction phase, with males typically developing both upper and lower horns while females lack horns entirely; this species has a longer pupation period compared to stag beetles, and larval wandering behavior can result in smaller adult beetles.

My Rhino larvae update (positive) #BETL #stagbeetle #beetle #insects #bug #pets #shorts追加:
Hello, welcome beetle people. And today is my update on my three rhino beetle larvae, specifically my Enzylotropes philippinensis peregrinus rhino beetle larvae. Gosh, that is a hard scientific name. So, first one here is at 14.3 g. Unfortunately, they've actually lost weight. Before, they were over 16 g. They appear to have lost a lot of this weight because they spent a lot of time wandering looking for a suitable place to make a pupa chamber.
All right, and now time for the smallest one.
Now, this one has been kind of weird.
Even after all this time, this one is still much, much smaller than its siblings. As you can see it right here, they are only 6.5 g. That is nearly a 10 g difference compared to its other siblings. So, I'm a little worried about them.
All right, to now here for the last and final rhino beetle. I know this one has already made a pupa chamber, so I'm just going to carefully dig it up until I find it. There we go.
Let's open up the hole a little bit so we could take a look inside.
So, taking a look, I was a little bit surprised to see, but this one is actually a female. They don't have their horns. This individual was around 15 or so grams the last time I weighed them.
So, I'm just going to cover them up, make sure they stay moist, and wait for them to emerge.
One thing I had noticed is that rhino beetles tend to have a much longer pupation period compared to stag beetles. Stag beetles are generally around 1 month. Rhinos seem to be longer than that.
And looping back to the first larvae from the video, this is about 1 month later. As you can see, he has finally decided to pupate. And because he has a bottom and upper horn, I can tell that he's a male. Unfortunately, because he did some wandering and lost a good amount of weight, he's going to be a bit of a smaller male. This is somewhat unfortunate, though this species is already really small, and they are very cute either way.
I also really like how the light reflects off the pupa. It gives them a nice cool yellow outline.
That's all for this update, and happy beetling.
