Square hung blocks and fascia

[00:00:00]I have a couple mock-ups right here.

[00:00:02]Square hung fascia, which you see in California a lot.

[00:00:07]So, that means that the face cut of the fascia as well as the cheek cuts of the fascia miter change as does the hip tail itself.

[00:00:22]But, what you see more often than not out here is square hung block blocked, which is the same principle.

[00:00:30]Block There's a common rafter running down.

[00:00:33]And the block hangs square instead of plumb.

[00:00:37]Usually, it's some kind of finish block gets painted out. And where it runs up against the hip, you have these changes.

[00:00:44]The bevel right?

[00:00:48]Cheek cut changes as does the face cut here.

[00:00:51]And There's a traditional method which I'm going to talk about uh how to get it.

[00:00:56]Traditionally, on the tongue, you'd set the rise and on the body you'd set the run and measure across it and you'd get the hypotenuse.

[00:01:06]And you'd slide this stair gauge down to the hypotenuse. Now, in this case, it's a 5 12. Hypotenuse is 13. And that would give you the face cut, believe it or not. So, what I mean by that is I'm going to pull this model down and show you.

[00:01:24]The face cut be 5 13 on a 5 12.

[00:01:28]On a 12 12, it'd be 5 17.

[00:01:34]So, there you have it. That's one of them.

[00:01:39]Now, how do you get the other? How do you get That's the space cut.

[00:01:43]You have to set your saw protractor to the bevel. What is the bevel? You just take that same hypotenuse and you put on the body and you put 12 on the tongue. So, instead of being a 12 12, which is a 45° angle, which is normally with plumb blocks and fascia, what it would be it'd just be a 45° angle, but then in the in the world of framing square means 12 12 looking down, instead it's going to be 12 13.

[00:02:20]So, you set that on the top of the board.

[00:02:29]12 on the tongue would be the cut.

[00:02:35]And then you bring it down to five. I mean, yeah, down to five.

[00:02:42]Lock it out at five.

[00:02:48]Face cut right there.

[00:02:50]The tape now draw it and my back to you and I'll turn it show it to you. See?

[00:02:57]Bevel. Right?

[00:03:02]Right? So, the bevel might be the other way. For a valley it'd be different than a hip.

[00:03:08]Right? Be opposite.

[00:03:12]And then you'd have to figure out what this angle is on your saw.

[00:03:17]Yeah, I just use math or you don't have to use math. You can use your protractor or a piece of plywood or 2 by. You just square over from the bevel and then parallel down.

[00:03:33]Measure at a 90 to each one of them, you know?

[00:03:38]In this in this case it's inch and 3/8.

[00:03:41]So, you have an inch and 3/8 and an inch and a half.

[00:03:45]Do the math or draw it out on a piece of plywood.

[00:03:49]Turns out it could be 42 and 1/2 inches.

[00:03:51]Set to center of 42. Woo, done.

[00:03:54]Take a look at it.

[00:03:57]Perfect. Super tight.

[00:04:00]See how tight that is? First try.

[00:04:02]Interesting, right?

[00:04:05]That has to do with the cosecant all [clears throat] this semi-complicated math.
