Long ago, the calendar originally had only 10 months, leaving part of winter completely uncounted. Later, King Numa Pompilius added January and February to fix the calendar, but the Romans believed even numbers were unlucky. Since one month had to be shorter, February was given only 28 days and became connected to ancient rituals.
