This video reviews the 2026 psychological horror film 'Obsession,' which stars Michael Johnston as Baron 'Bear' Bailey and Inde Navarette as Nikki Freeman, written and directed by Curry Barker. The reviewer, The ReviewJunkee, praises the film for taking a recycled horror trope (the obsessive male lead who becomes dangerous after making a supernatural wish) and executing it with fresh supernatural elements, strong performances, and clever ambiguity. The reviewer gives it a high 9/10, noting it stays fresh and intriguing despite being a familiar story structure, and recommends it as an impressive independent film made under a million dollars.

OBSESSION - Movie Review 2026 (Hand drawn illustrations)Added:
[music] >> Hey, this is the Review Junkie and today I'll be reviewing the new psychological horror film Obsession. As always, my review will be illustrated and the artwork is done by myself. And if you like movies, art, and comic books, please hit that subscribe button because all my reviews are hand-drawn and hype up the video if the option is there because it really helps out the channel.
So, this movie stars Michael Johnston and India Eisley. It is written and directed by Curry Barker.
So, the plot pertains to Michael Johnston who plays Baron and everyone calls him Bear and he has the hugest crush on his coworker Nikki. And every time he sees her, he just lights up, cyberstalks her, just scrolls endlessly, right? And wants nothing more than Nikki to be his girlfriend. His crush is so deep, he can barely contain his erection every time she's around.
Huh, isn't puppy love just grand? You know what I'm saying? Okay? So, something happens and he ends up at a mystic shop to buy something for Nikki but instead ends up getting a one wish willow. And let me say this, don't we all wish we had one of those because I'd like to make a lot of wishes. So, that store is one of those oddball stores that sells trinkets like stone-colored necklaces, mood rings, witchcraft spell books, tampons, bleach, panties, and pregnancy tests.
Yeah, it's one of those stores. Okay?
So, he makes a wish and I don't really need to tell you where things are headed because we all know how this goes. So, this is one of those rare instances where I actually agree with the high Rotten Tomatoes score. This is so good that I actually saw it twice already and the teaser trailer had me hooked. But as soon as I saw the Blumhouse banner, I almost wet my pants because they haven't had a win in many, many years.
And thank God this is R-rated. And you know, we've seen this plot reused so many times before, right? From The Crush with Alicia Silverstone in 1993 to Fatal Attraction and Misery, it's been done to death. Now, this did remind me of an episode of Tales from the Crypt, but what makes this special is that it takes something that we've seen a million times over and finds a way to keep it fresh and entertaining. And it's all about the surprises, and that's my first pro. Things immediately get wonky after the wish is made. Whereas the other girl-obsessed-with-the-boy films are grounded in reality, this has supernatural and horror elements sprinkled in. And everyone knows she's going to fly off the handle, but it's the way she flies off the handle, how things build up, and the situation and surrounding things that make it unique.
I kept waiting for her to return in every subsequent scene to see what crazy was going down next cuz I was here for that. Okay? Okay. And the casting here is spot-on. The performances by the two leads are superb. Michael captured the energy of a love-sick puppy really well done even down to his voice, which had an innocent-like quality to it. But, the MVP here goes to Indie because her part is super juicy with a capital J.
She naturally gets more to do, and she blew me out of the water. Now, I don't want to give anything away, but the wish is nuanced and has side effects. And what she's asked to do from being really sweet one second to suddenly being off the rails in a moment's notice, and she toggles between the two with ease. She goes from wearing hot pants and then batshit crazy in mere seconds. Now, I also like that the antagonist here is really ambiguous. I also thought it was rather clever that Nikki does an act of kindness in the first 10 minutes of the film, and once the spell kicks in, things start to unravel, certain things are said, and you never quite know what's real and what isn't. And this happened several times, and there are also scenes where she's not visible, it's just her silhouette, and it added to the mystery along with amping up the tension. Like her eyes would light up just enough to come in focus and then fade out. It really mirrored the juxtaposition of what she's going through that made it nuanced. Now, I wouldn't say this is a traditional horror because there's no real jump scares per se, and the sound design here really stood out because there are abrupt sounds that are very loud, and a score that plays every time you know it's heading in a certain direction, like something good always happens followed by something bad. Now, I don't have any real cons, but I was a bit surprised by some of the things in Barrett's medicine cabinet, and it was probably explained somewhere and I just completely missed it, but if you know why that stuff is in the medicine cabinet, please let me know in the comments below. Lastly, I was confused by everyone's age group because one character is applying to colleges, and nobody here looks age-appropriate.
Nobody's in their late teens or early 20s, and the two male lead actors that are here look like they're in their early 30s to me. So, this brings me to my and this gets a high 9 out of 10 from me. I felt this was something recycled, but done impeccably where it stays fresh, intriguing, and I was invested in the turnout because I had no idea which direction it was going to go in. This was extremely impressive for a film made under a million dollars, and if you happen to know any movies like this in reverse where the man goes crazy, please let me know in the comments cuz I don't think I've ever seen it backwards. So, this is a big green light for me and definitely something to see on the big screen, where it's meant to be seen. So, thank you again for checking out my review. If you like, please subscribe.
