The Catholic Church permits cremation but requires four key stipulations: (1) respect the deceased's explicit wish for cremation if expressed, (2) the person must believe in the resurrection of the body, (3) ashes must remain intact and not be subdivided among family members, and (4) ashes must be deposited in a sacred space such as a cemetery or columbarium, not scattered or kept at home. These guidelines were officially declared in 1963 and amended in 1999, reflecting the Church's respect for individual wishes while maintaining theological principles about resurrection and proper burial.

Shadow.
Good morning.
What's perfect?
Everything is Hallelujah.
Thanks.
One hour.
Hallelujah.
Thank you.
Hallelujah.
Hallelujah.
Amen.
Hallelujah.
Hallelujah.
Shall we begin? Okay, we'll begin the mass.
Let us all stand.
Eternal rest grants unto Jose Orortes, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May her rest in peace in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
>> My dear brothers and sisters, to prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries, let's call to mind our sins.
I confess to Almighty God and to you my brothers and sisters that I have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words in what I've done and what I have failed to do. Through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault.
Therefore, I ask blessed Mary, ever virgin, all the angels and saints, and to you my brothers and sisters to pray for me to the Lord our God. May Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life.
>> Lord have mercy.
>> Christ have mercy.
>> Lord have mercy. Let us pray. Oh God, almighty father, our faith professes that your son died and rose again.
Mercifully grant that through this mystery, your servant Jose, who has fallen asleep in Christ, may rejoice to rise again through him, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.
Please be seated for the readings.
First reading is taken from the book of wisdom.
The just man, though he die early, shall be at rest. For the age that is honorable comes not with the passing of time, nor can it be measured in terms of years. Rather, understanding is the holy crown for men. And an unsolided life, the attainment of old age. He who pleased God was loved. He who lived among sinners was transported, snatch away, lest wickedness perverts his mind or desert beguile his soul. For the witchery of the poulter things obscures what is right, and the world of desire transforms the innocent mind.
Having become perfect in a short while, he reached the fullness of a long career. For his soul was pleasing to the Lord. Therefore, he spit out of the midst of wickedness, but the people saw and did not understand, nor did they take this into account. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
Responsorial Psalm. The Lord is my shepherd. There is nothing I shall want.
>> The Lord is my shepherd. I shall not want. In burden pastures, he gives me repose. Beside restful waters, he leads me. He refreshes my soul. He guides me in right paths for his name's sake.
Response.
Even though I walk in the dark valley, I fear no evil, for you are at my side with your rod and your staff that give me courage. Response.
You spread the table before me in the sight of my foes. You anoint my head with oil. My cup overflows. Response.
Only goodness and kindness follow me. 40 days of my life and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord for years to come.
Response.
Second reading is taken from the letter of St. Paul to the Philippians.
Brothers and sisters, our citizenship is in heaven and from it we also await the savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. He will change our lowly body to conform with his glorified body by the power that enables him also to bring all things into subjection to himself.
The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
Let us all stand. Allelujah. Allelujah.
Allelujah.
Blessed are those who have died in the Lord. Let them rest from the levers for the goodness go with them. Allelujah.
Allelujah. Allelujah. The Lord be with you.
>> A reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew.
>> At that time Jesus answered, "I give praise to you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth. For although you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned, you have revealed them to the childlike. Yes, fathers, that has been your gracious will. All things have been handed over to me by my father. No one knows the son except the father and no one knows the father except the son and anyone to whom the son wishes to reveal him.
Come to me all you who labor and are burdened and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me for I am meek and humble of hearts and you will find rest for yourselves for my yoke is easy and my burden light.
The gospel of the Lord.
Please be seated for a while.
Good evening to everyone.
I am Father Ramon Pedrosa and I'm chaplain at Roomich Memorial Hospital in Long Beach and also associate pastor of Holy Trinity Church in Long Beach and I know some people here.
Okay. Now, and where is the other one?
Oh, there she is.
And who else now? Of course, Elizabeth.
So first off, I'm very very sorry that Jose Ortiz died and I'm extending to you my heartfelt condolence and I know this very difficult time for you and what with the loss and the grief and the sorrow that you are undergoing right now.
It is indeed very very difficult and in fact one of the most difficult things all of us human beings will always go through life is losing someone we love the most. Be that someone or grandma or grandpa, mom or dad, husband or wife, son or daughter, brother or sister or best friends. It is always tough to lose anyone of them.
And yet here we are. We have to move on.
And so though our brother Hussein may have passed yet, it does not mean that we lost everything we love about his person. Our relationship with the disease prior to his death is based on human physical experience.
And so we love him, we kiss him, we embrace him, we ate with him, we you know eat out with him and we went out to many places with him and many other memorable, funny, and fun, joyful things. So remember all of them and treasure them in your hearts. Now that he's passed, from now on, our relationship with him will be entirely based on memory. So this is very, very important. So whatever you have of him as memories or whatever impacts his life had upon you, cherish and nourish all of them and it's them at the bottom of your hearts.
Our journey through grief is based on memory.
That's why one of the first one of the steps that we are going to uh encounter and uh live is travel back to our memory lanes where everything is stored. And so there will be times not only today, not only tomorrow, but the days after, weeks after, months after that you'll be missing him. You'll be very very sad and emotional but once that happens it is happening right now but in the long run will still be happening. So you go and enter into your memory lens and you will find there those happy memories. And when you find them, little by little, your sadness and your loss and your grief will be eased out and you'll begin to smile. Especially when he was giving jokes, especially when he is happy with his laughter, whatever joyful things. And therefore, you will begin to smile.
Or even if something you feel resentful because we're just but human beings.
We're flawed human beings. We have all shortcomings. We have all imperfections and we hurt each other. One of the ironic things that is happening to us all the time is that we hurt the one we love the most. So in our relationship this hurtful things are happening. So when you become a little resentful or when you're a little angry then go back to your memory lens and you will find in there many many many acts of kindness and when you see and feel the acts of kindness that he did to you and impacted your life, you begin to forgive and you begin to forget And therefore these two very very significant things that are very experiential in our lives, bear them, think of them and always reflect on them and you will be on the way to recovery. Berements is very very long. For some people it takes only a week. For some people it takes only some months. But for some people it took 10 years. I have experienced and I have witnessed and I have uh counseledled people 10 years of anger in their loved ones who passed away. So berement is an ongoing thing. It is very difficult to erase that but in time you'll be able to overcome that. So once again though our friend uh Jose may have passed yet. As I said everything is not lost. So remember him all the time. Go back to your memory lens and you'll find very beautiful things in there. Having said that, therefore, never never let his memory die at all.
It's that memory inside your mind and at the deepest precises of your heart. So that's the first part. The second part is this is uh mortaring. This is for cremation. But there are many things that many people do not understand why cremation is being done.
2,000 years ago, more than 2,000 years ago before even Jesus died thousands of years ago, people had been cremating people, especially the ancient Romans and the ancient Greeks. And when they went to battlefields, many of them died and they just simply brought the bodies of their comrades and their you know uh men to the camp, build a big big pile of wood and bess. You just simply light a fire and place them on top and they burn. You see them in the movies. That's cremation. That's burning. And people at those times they do not have any qualms at all. So they just simply burn the bodies.
Now for Christians like us and especially for Catholics, when did cremation practically start?
And you will be surprised that as far as the Roman Catholics are concerned, the church only began to allow cremation in the church in 1963.
That's as late as 1963.
And why?
The reason is simple. Jesus died and he was buried. And that tradition is being carried over generations after generations up to 1963.
So officially the church declares from now on will open up the gates of cremation and why the change.
You do not know the change but I know the change. And so I'm giving you this information.
In 1963 there was the declaration of cremation and in 1999 there was an amendment to it and I was not private to it because we were passed here. I was in Texas by then and all arises ardes of the United States and Paris were sent copies of the old declaration of cremation for amendments for reduction and for addition. So after so many months the whole thing was done and it reverted back to the uh uh conference of bishops and therefore the final uh amendation was published in 1999.
So what were the stipulations of the amendations or the changes of the first declaration of uh cremation? Number one, if one of your loved ones happens to be telling you all the time, repeating and repeating all the time, please don't bury me anymore, just burn me or cremate me.
It happens to me many, many times at the hospital in Long Beach where people especially when they're very very seriously ill. And we have the forms at the hospital called five wishes. One of those five wishes is saying when I die, I want my body to be burned or to be cremated. So those are five one of the five wishes and the copy is given to the family. A copy is given to the hospital and the third copy is to the spiritual you know uh a spiritual department I belong. So I have passed several of those five voices when people were asking me oh if I'm cremated do I sin? Do I what? Do I what? Do I what? So there are a lot of questions you need to answer them. So one of the stipulations of the declaration of the cremation is that when somebody is repeating all over again that I will be cremated, we have to respect the wishes of that person.
If it happens at the hospital and in critical condition and says okay let me be cremated when I die before you know he is incapacitated to make decision for himself. So when that happens at the hospital, so here is a copy and therefore we have to respect the decision of the person to be cremated and that is if there is no such express permission to be cremated, we must not according to the church create a person. What is to be done is to follow the traditional solemn funeral mass and interament to be buried. So mind you that that is what the church says. And second that the dying or when we speak about the dying it doesn't mean that you die tomorrow or you die uh six months after or you die a year after.
I'm a chaplain of 16ospices for terminally ill people and therefore some of them died the day after they're you know enrolled or one week after just yesterday I you know I just give two you know last rights for people on hospice and almost every day people are dying. I have to give last rights every every now and then. So uh therefore when these people are actively dying or dying uh for hospice you are given six months that within 6 months you have to die but if you overcome that term of six months so you'll be released because you are doing well. So extended prognosis some people live after that after three years. I have some people that live after three years before they died after you know being uh given the last right. So my dear friends the second point the church is that the person who is dying must believe in the resurrection.
There are only three very important you know uh feast in the church in our Catholic church. One is Pentecost. We just finished Pentecost and the second is Easter and the last one is Christmas. These are the most important you know feast in the calendar liturggical calendar. So resurrection for as long as we believe in the resurrection we must not worry about what happens to the body. If for example we are shipwrecked at the middle of the sea and nobody survives and therefore eaten by the sharks or whatever creatures are there or whether you are buried six fat below the ground and you are eaten by the worms. For all you know the worms can smell the dead body from a distance. So they flock into the bottom of six you know fat below the ground eaten by the worms.
Whether you are eaten by the sharks or eaten by the worms it does not matter.
What matters is that you believe in the resurrection. That means that you believe that there is life after death.
So that is the second stipulation by the Catholic Church. So I'm pretty sure that Queen Hi died. He had been expressing himself don't bury me anymore and I believe in the resurrection. So that is perfectly clear and he is on the right way. And uh the third one is that we have to uh not only believe in the resurrection but also the manner of disposal of decrements. He will be cremitted tomorrow. Right? So how would you dispose of the cre according to the church in that declaration of cremation is that we must never divide the ashes.
Let the ashes be intact. That's the word intact meaning say no subdivision. And who does the subdivision only Filipinos do the subdivision? Why?
Because a large family are in the Philippines and a large family here. So half here, half over there. And if there are other parts of the globe that need you know the ashes. So 1/4 here, 1/4 there. So that is subdivision.
But don't let the asses be subdivided.
Let the asses be intact.
So you know what else? For all you know, in my private masses, I have seen a lot of people that have been subdividing the ashes. And so the church says no don't sub the let them be enter some approach me okay father remembrance the church says no don't have it and so uh some people uh the fourth is according to the church find a sacred space for the disposal of the cre.
That means no throwing of the ashes into the sea, no throwing of the ashes into the legs, no throwing of the ashes into the parks wherever. Let the cremens be intact and be deposited in a sacred space.
What does that mean?
So I have seen a lot of earns in my private asses our masses that their decrements in the earns remain up to 10 to 15 years at the middle of the living room. Now above the furnace there is a furnace right above that there is a ledge and they put in there in front so that when people come to visit there there is somebody in here. So that is psychological remove the psychology of that or if within the family some way somehow they said okay oh I love I love I love him so very much so let him stay at home for as long as I want. The church says leave them at peace. Have a sacred space for them. Either you bury them in the ground wherever you already have somebody in the ground or wife or mom or dad and you can deposit you can arrange with the morttery deposit above the casket of your loved one. It's doable or find another space. There are uh niches in the mouse that are a lot cheaper. So you don't have to worry about cleaning. Uh there's already a space if your corn is like this big. So you have all the sizes over there. So deposit them there. But let them stay in the secret spaces, not at home to avoid psychological matters. And so because sometimes you cannot you go to work, you cry, you come back home, you cry and so on and so forth for as long as he is there or she is there. So to avoid that, find a secret space. So those are four very important stipulations of the declaration of the church for cremation.
I hope that stays in your mind so that we know what to do when our loved ones die.
Nobody explains this anymore. No, as far as I know, nobody because They don't they don't do that anymore.
So just have some you know feeling well you know feel feel good feel good feel good kind of you know homeless but important things must be said first especially in cremation I take time to explain because many of us do not know and it is because only Filipinos do that and so we have to educate our brothers and sisters who are doing that. So when you hear somebody like that and somebody that I'm alone so help me spread the word so that things will be you know cleared up. We don't hear what the church says. It is through the priest that you could hear them unless otherwise you read a lot. So you can read this in the internet or whatever but many not so many read not so many try to find out. So I'm trying my best to do this for you.
Do I make myself clear on this? I hope you do them and follow the policy of the church. Okay. So that's all. Let us all stand and I hope you learned something Okay.

Hello.
>> Hi.
Hi. Good evening everyone. My name is Nicole.
Um, I am um Jojo's niece, but really I feel like I'm his daughter because um when I was young, I lived in the Philippines and I I didn't have my mom there. she was here working hard for for me and for our family.
But so I was in a sense alone in the Philippines but because I had such a great extended family with Tita Rose tab especially Tito Jojo my logo my Lola everyone in the Flores family they were so kind enough Tito and Tito Jojo to me in to treat me like I was one of their own.
And even though he wasn't he wasn't my my dad, he was my dad in every sense because during my time spent with Daddy Jojo and mommy bed, they really took care of me.
They never made me feel like I was just someone they're taking care of because they had to.
They really made me feel like I was their own.
And if that doesn't speak to the kind of person that Jojo was, I don't know what does because Tito Jojo really touched so many lives.
He was so loving and so caring and just so giving to everyone that he came across and he would always just make you feel so welcome and so part of his family that you always you even forget that you're not even his own kid, you know, cuz he never let me feel that way.
And I'm just I'm just so thankful to have known him and to have known his love and his care.
And thank you so much for taking me in and showing me how a good dad is. what I what you know I was looking for all my life and thank you Jojo. Thank you Daddy Jojo.
I wish we had just a little bit more time so we could I could show you even more how thankful I am for you.
But I hope whatever I was able to for you is enough because what you've done for me.
I can never repay.
Thank you. Thank you, Daddy. Jojo, I love you.
Hello everyone. Um, this is a message from uh, Tito Jojo.
So, sorry you couldn't be here today, but you heard this >> and how proud I am that you are my father.
>> Hey, Dad. I just want to sh how grateful I am and how proud I am that you are my father.
Thank you for everything that you taught me. Growing up, I always look up to you.
I admired all your works, your decision makings, and how you handled every single problem that you received.
I'm very thankful to you for raising me as to who I am today. Thank you for showing me how to respect, be disciplined, to love, and to man up. Thank you for taking care of mom and loving her so much. That showed me how much you care about me and mom.
You always choose God and family more than anything else.
I remember when I was younger, you sacrificed your work just to support me and watch me in my games.
when I was still playing football. I even switched my sport to basketball because I saw how much you love the game. And I thank you for introducing it to me and even guiding me how to become better and even when you can't play the game anymore.
We always talk about basketball nonstop.
Thank you, Dad, for always having my back whenever I feel down.
You've always been proud of me for whatever I am doing.
You supported me in all my hobbies and all the things that makes me happy from playing football, swimming, basketball, and even cycling.
And lately, you showed me again how much um fun camping is, even if I was still refusing it at first.
Dad, I also want to apologize if there was a time that I disappointed you. I'm not as smart as you, but you never gave up on me. Even though I failed countless times, you never got tired of helping me to rise up again until I achieved the goal.
for Dad.
God, we miss you so much. Thank you for everything. I love you.
Um, hi everyone. I am Nicole's husband.
Even though when uh Tito do Jojo first came to my life was back in 2014 he came from the Philippines with Tito Rose and that's when I first met the other side of of my family.
They embraced me so much with so much love.
Um Just what I would make said meto Jojo was unexplainable. He was really like my other father. Um he was Um, there was a point in me and Nicole's life where we had a son.
His name was Nolan.
And passed away in 2023. He was only 10 months old.
And that was the most difficult time of my life.
And I felt so alone and Tito Jojo was one of them to always keep me strong. Um he's such a great example of a father how he treats Tito Beth as a wife. He's he's such a great example.
Um, and because of such a good person he wasn't care when he came from the Philippines, I wanted to make his dreams come true.
Um, whatever it was. Um, he loved the Lakers so much. Um, bought him courtside tickets. Um, me and him watch the game.
He loved uh Ferrari a Ferrari and we had a trip going to Vegas and uh we drove the Ferrari uh one of his dreams. There was there's no amount of money that no matter when he came from the Philippines, I would just spend it just because he took care of Nicole and he was um like my father.
Um, I'm going to miss him so much.
Um, I just want to say thank you.
Thank you, Tito Jojo, for being a father figure for me, being another example of a father.
And I love you so much.
Thank you.
We invite Hello. Um, my name is Joy. Um, I'm um, Tita Jojo's niece in the Ortiz side. Um, I've heard, you know, everybody's stories about my uncle, but there's one thing that, um, forever going to be in my heart was when I was doing my exams for college and I wanted to take up engineering and I thought I wouldn't make it. I stayed at my uncle Jojo's house for a while and he was teaching me math and everything and he made it so easy for me. He made it so simple and that little act of love just gave me a whole lot of confidence to make sure that I and I am where I am now because of that kindness.
And just like what Nicole said, he would take in anyone, everyone in his home because that's the kind of person that he is. And every time I will go back to the Philippines, he would pick me up from the airport.
And now when I go back there, no one's going to pick me up anymore.
So when he came here and he was sick and I went to the hospital to see him, I was holding back my tears because I know he didn't want me to see that we're crying and every time my auntie, my nth and my mom would cry in the hospital, he would look at me and like he was telling me take care of this too. So, I couldn't cry. And um Gracie, my daughter, and him already had a blood compact that she was going to do gymnastics for her Lola Jojo. So, she asked me to sign her up this summer for a gymnast class. So, that's how much we love him. And so, um it's it's too soon. We did not expect this.
But I was praying when when he left and I was praying and praying every night. I was crying to God because I could not understand why it's too early, too soon.
And God told me that, you know, the law is to love God above all and love others as you love yourself. And your uncle already did that.
He did that his whole life. And so, you know, it's time for him to come home.
And now he's with my grandma.
Um, so Tita Jo, if you can hear us from here, we love you and we miss you so much.
Before we go our separate ways, let us take our brother.
May we express our affiction for him. It is our sadness and strengthen our hope.
One day we shall join.
your hands of mercies to command our certain hope that all he will rise with him on the last day.
We give you thanks for all the blessings upon him.
There are signs to us of your goodness of your saints in Christ. Merciful Lord, turn toward us and Open the gates of paradise to the servants and help us remain to confir Christ our rest.
Amen.
for the mercy of God. And stand for the final blessing.
The Lord be with you. And mayy God bless you all. The father, the son, and the holy spirit. The mass is ended. Love the Lord.
That's There's also Hallelujah.
