The video insightfully deconstructs how "historical accuracy" is often weaponized to gatekeep Western mythology from modern diversity. It reminds us that classical icons are universal symbols of beauty, not static racial property.

Why Are People So Mad About a Black Helen of Troy?本站添加:
Over the past seven months, 6% of Musk's posts on X, a total of about 850 have been about race. More than half of those have used the word white. He's posted on X about race almost daily.
166 days out of 197 from last October to midappril. Suddenly, he cannot stop talking. and he's repeating little bits from the far right, you know, cuz I'll see other people saying the same things and then he'll sometimes pick them up and and repeat them >> and magnify them >> and it's concerning. Is it Do you do you find it concerning?
>> Yeah. I mean, did there was the one that I was talking about? Is it Leita?
>> Yeah. Yeah. So, >> Leita Nung.
>> Yeah. Yeah. So, she she's starring as Helen um >> Helen of Troy, but she's not. That's just just come out. She's playing a different character.
>> Oh, she is.
>> Oh, really? Do we know for sure?
>> I'll I'll tell you. Okay. Yeah.
>> So, he was upset that she was cast in um like uh >> the the Odyssey.
>> The Odyssey.
>> Christopher Nolan. Let's get all the background. Christopher Nolan, one of our greatest filmmakers. Big budget Odyssey. Um Matt Damon is playing Odessius. Is that who it is? Odysius.
Yeah. Yeah. What is it?
>> Yeah. Yeah, that's Matt Damon.
>> I don't remember. Yeah, Matt Damon. Is he even Greek?
>> And so the point is like having a black woman I don't whether or not this is true or not. This was the discourse.
Having a black woman be um portrayed as being beautiful enough to inspire these wars, which clearly ridiculous. And so he's been posting pictures of her >> from when she was playing a slave, a slave, an enslaved woman, and I think it was to slave. And it's like look how unattractive she is. And so you have and blatly racist, right? Because there's tons of pictures of her that exist on the internet. You could have showed another picture and they like and so and even the idea that a dark-skinned black woman could be seen as attractive to the entire world there. He's presenting it like the the mere fact of who she is makes it clear this is a ridiculous idea. And so you do have like a a strange focus on race and in particular race as relates to standards of beauty that him and a bunch of other people are picking up on.
>> Okay. We were both right and we were both wrong.
>> Oh, >> Lupita Nuango is set to play two important characters in the Odyssey along with portraying the famous Helen of Troy.
>> Yeah.
>> The actress will also play Helen's sister >> Clemenestra. Is that how you say? Cle whatever some. Yeah. So she's playing two characters.
>> Were they twins in the account? I don't know. I mean, there's less less relevant than the racism.
>> I think that's even more offensive, but like the whole family is a black woman.
>> The same black woman.
>> The same black woman. What's that all about? People everywhere.
>> I Okay, >> because she'd been a slave for 12 years.
>> I don't know if Elon Musk tweeted about this at the time, but you remember when Rings of Power that Amazon series based on the Lord of the Rings simmerely and stuff like that, people flipped out because there was a black elf >> and people were mad about Black uh Black Snake. Black Snake, too.
>> Oh, yeah. Black Snape is another one, right? But these are all fictional characters.
>> You're erasing my culture.
>> Yeah.
>> Hobbit culture.
>> No, Western civilization. This this battle over over civilizations has has so captivated the far right. You know, that we are in a knockdown, dragged out, allin battle to save Western civilization.
>> Here's the thing. If you really wanted to preserve quote unquote western civilization, maybe western civilization shouldn't have colonized the rest of the world so that now all those places are coming back to the west >> only because of our suicidal empathy >> if we didn't care. We colonized them but we shouldn't have started caring about them because now they want to come and open up a Pakistani restaurant right down the street from me and I don't like it. Maybe maybe I missed this because I was looking up her character while you guys were talking, but like okay, Helen of Troy famously, even people who don't know anything about Greek mythology knows that she's supposed to be beautiful.
>> Yeah.
>> By any objective standard, Lupita Noongo is a beautiful woman. What >> is she Greek?
>> But Helen of Troy wasn't Greek. Troy wasn't >> of course we criticized we criticized Greek women for being sworthy. So we didn't we want we want a Swedish Greek.
I think that you have we have this weird thing that and this is we were talking about this earlier. There's been this weird return to the ability to sexualize and objectify women in an attempt to fight wokeness. And so you see this >> in evangelical evangelical. So you the whole point is >> I don't think we ever stopped objectifying women as a culture within Christian context. So what they have is like here's a what people will see a traditionally beautiful blonde woman with a certain build and they will put this like they'll put the picture up and go clearly this is what we all want and then they put the black woman up and go clearly this isn't what we want and I like well hold on aren't we supposed to like not be lusting after people but they're saying no this is the woman that we should be lusting after in this fictional film not this woman >> cuz this is the beauty that God created the garden any picture I've ever seen of Eve she's white >> yeah and so what I'm saying is like not all that attractive, right?
>> She doesn't shave.
>> People People are putting these Y like you're not I'm going to make a real point. My there you have this thing where the racism and the sexism are showing at the exact same time because there's a constant fight over who we're allowed to be attracted to.
>> Yeah.
>> And the fact that the black woman I mean they're not even making an argument.
They're just saying clear dark-kinned black woman, nobody likes her. everybody likes this other woman. And and there's a part of like Christianity or evangelical Christianity that is saying in the battle against wokeism, I see what Elon Musk is doing as an ally. And part of it is the this idea of racial fatigue that he's saying, "Hey, >> all of the work that we've done to kind of end racism, it made me feel not great about myself sometimes >> as a as a South African raised in apartheid." And so what I'm going to do is I'm going to I'm going to like I'm going to shut off any concerns about empa empathy or propriety or anything and I'm just going to kind of fight for my own. And because he seems to be pushing back on things that are leftcoded, people are ignoring the blatantly racist stuff. I mean, it seems like some Christians somewhere ought to have gone, hey, this guy seems to be putting forward the elements of the great replacement theory that he's afraid that white people are being replaced. And it is that idea that we need to save like white civilization.
>> He's an immigrant.
>> I know what I'm saying about >> but he's a product of uh you know South Africa.
>> He's a white immigrant.
>> Yes. South Africa. That's why we can only accept refugees from Africa if they're white South Africans because they they can do Western civilization >> because they don't have melanin >> because they're white.
>> That's so dumb.
I >> Here's the thing. Yeah. Okay.
I'm assuming Elon M I mean he had the whole Doge thing. He's obviously been big partner with Donald Trump and all that stuff. I'm assuming he's a big fan of like deregulation, keeping government out of business and let me do what I want.
>> Yes.
>> Shouldn't he be like celebrating the fact that Christopher Nolan is making the film he wants to make >> and he's casting the actors he wants to cast and just let him be?
>> He believes Christopher Nolan had to do this to qualify for an Oscar because the Academy has diversity requirements now that they add read up on that.
>> Yeah, I I I also read up on that >> and that's not it's a total misinterpretation of >> Variety wrote a piece on it and and said that every Academy Award best picture film since the beginning would technically qualify >> under the new standards. So there's no reason, and that seems hard to believe, but they did the math and said it's true. Um, so there was would be no reason for Christopher Nolan to have had to change any casting to qualify for an Academy Award. He could have an all Greek cast. He didn't want one. Right.
