[00:00:23]Well, there could soon be a new way to get to and from JFK Airport and it avoids a lot of traffic.

[00:00:28]>> Fox 5's Duarte Geraldino takes us for a ride on what's being called an electric air taxi.

[00:00:36]It's called eVTOL, short for electric vertical takeoff and landing. No gasoline, no jet fuel, just batteries.

[00:00:43]Think about it. With a connected network of eVTOLs in the city, time-sensitive organ transplant deliveries could take minutes, not hours. It looks like a big drone, but it can carry four passengers.

[00:00:57]Watch as the aircraft lifts straight up, like a helicopter, then switches into horizontal flight mode, like a plane. It lands in the same small space as a helicopter. It flies much more quiet overhead and it cuts travel time dramatically.

[00:01:15]>> This flight brought three names together. Joby Aviation, the California company that built the aircraft, Blade, the New York operator Joby acquired last year, and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which runs JFK and helped clear the path for the demo.

[00:01:28]Blade CEO Rob Wiesenthal says the eVTOL is more comfortable than a helicopter because it was designed for commuters, not for gas workers or the military. A conventional helicopter, it's going to be tricky to get into. You're putting on four-point seat belts. You have headphones, wires. You may not see the pilot well. These are panoramic windows, easy ingress and egress, and most importantly, quiet and fast. Inside, the cabin feels like a modern car with shoulder strap seat belts, panoramic windows, charging stations, even. A trip from Manhattan to JFK will cost about the same as an Uber Black, about $200.

[00:02:06]The aircraft will eventually fly the same routes Blade flies its helicopters today, from heliports on the West Side, the East Side, and downtown, out to JFK, Newark, Westchester, and the Hamptons in the summer. Man, we worked so hard to make this thing. Please don't call it a helicopter. It's a totally different thing. Zach Reeder is eVTOL's chief test pilot. After last year's deadly helicopter crash in the Hudson, safety is the question on everyone's mind. He points to the propellers. Well, this thing has six big propellers. Up to two of them can stop functioning altogether and it can still land safely. And then each motor is really two electric motors driving a single propeller, so it's basically a 12-motor aircraft.

[00:02:46]>> The flight from JFK over here to the West 30th Street heliport took about 15 or so minutes, but before you can buy a ticket to ride this aircraft, it still needs to get FAA approval, but sources tell me that should be very soon. On the West Side, Duarte Geraldino, Fox 5.
