From the copy's perspective, the machine works perfectly. But what if teleportation isn't travel at all? What if it's just death with a fancy replacement? Probably one of the scariest parts is imperfections wouldn't even matter.

The copy would rationalize every flaw, because we already do that every single day. You already don't remember most of your childhood, and your personality changes over time, and your cells already replace themselves constantly. Maybe it's realizing that consciousness might already work like a slowly updating copy of itself. And if that's true, how would you even know you're the original?
