[00:00:00]Why do some bridges slowly bend under traffic and eventually fail? It is not just about concrete. The real strength of a bridge actually comes from the steel structure hidden underneath. The load first goes to the girder, then to the peers, then to the pile cap, and finally to the piles, which transfer it down into the hard rock layer below.

The steel cage is reinforced with spiral bars and tied together. When the bars are not long enough, lap joints are used to connect them.
