Planet of Fire (1984) is widely considered one of the finest Classic Doctor Who serials, featuring Peter Davison's Fifth Doctor, Mark Strickson's Vislor Turlough, and Nicola Bryant's Peri Brown in her first appearance. The episode is notable for its stunning European location filming on volcanic landscapes, the return of the Master (Anthony Ainley), and the introduction of the Chameleon as the Master. The hosts praise its narrative structure, particularly Turlough's departure arc, and consider it more accessible to new viewers than many other Classic Who episodes.

>> I'll say not that weekend, but the weekend after.

>> That's very sweet of you.

>> He [ __ ] did, bro. What the hell?
>> Conor's got to go.
>> What's he doing?
>> Yeah, he's they're down the pub as we speak.
>> Yeah.
>> I didn't know about I was like, was I invited? Because it's all going off in the family group chat. I'm driving at work. No, no, no, no.
>> Uh >> Then comes through a message, "What time are you going to the pub tonight?" I was like, "Pub?
Do you You not remember I film on Thursdays?"
>> But, you told previously that we're going to No, okay.

>> Uh I guess we could quickly talk about how Doctor Who is uh canceled and not coming back for Christmas.
>> Welcome to the sort of news, sort of [ __ ] >> And I was having such a nice day.
>> Um Oh, wait. Uh so They Sorry, Connor just pointed out a technical error. We can't hear our speaker system and it's cuz there's a cord that's not plugged in.
>> That'll do.
>> You can just plug that cord in, Connor.
>> I didn't know if I was allowed to. I came in and >> in and then and then we can hear the sound bites.
All right? Ready? Ready? Ready? Put it in the hole.
>> Oh, that'll do it.
And I was having such a nice day.
>> Welcome to the news. Now we can hear it.
That happens every now and then. We can't hear what we're uh what the sound bite is saying.
>> count on us cuz we look at each other and go >> Awkwardly wait while the sound bite happens, yeah.
Uh but no, so Okay, so it all sort of started. The sun was like, "Hold on a minute, guys. You know >> The sun spoke?
>> The sun cha- You know what I'm saying?
>> sun spoke?
>> Icarus. Because I'm close listening to the sun. [ __ ] kill my >> Isn't that Icarus and Icarus?
>> Flight No, no.
>> Icarus >> Icarus Icarus flew too close to the sun.
>> I I don't think it's Icarus.
>> It's Icarus. Icarus.
>> Icarus.
>> Icarus. Yeah, there we go. Yeah, not Idris Elba. My apologies.
>> yeah.
>> [laughter] >> Uh so, the sun >> That's the hottest place on Earth.
>> The paper.
>> Yeah, okay.
>> They came out and said, "Hold on a minute, you're probably not going to get Doctor Who Christmas special." Insider.
And the one the one thing I'll say is these articles always get worded with with like It was things I say, "Because of woke storylines." And that's that's where you start to like discredit them a little bit because it's not real [ __ ] reporting if you're just making [ __ ] up like that, IMO.
But >> Yeah, Doctor Who's always been [ __ ] That's the reason.
>> It's always been poo. It's just Everyone just now knows it's poo, it's the difference.
>> actually starting to realize that it's just dog [ __ ] >> Yeah.
>> And because of that, we Here you go.
>> So, everyone sort of jumped on the on the bandwagon, right, and have been saying like, uh like all the other articles have been like Doctor Who might be delayed. It It's either going to get scrapped or it's going to be delayed to Easter.
Uh you guys all know by the time this pod's come out, you guys would have all sort of I I guess seen all this stuff circulating.
I, personally, think that where there's smoke, there's fire. And >> Oh, [ __ ] >> I'm not saying that The Sun is being credible for once. Oh, no, no, no, no.
All I'm saying, Mr. Hannon, is that you know, Russell being asked like being asked questions, he's like waving them away, doesn't want to talk about it. And I just think if it was happening, if if there wasn't some form of problem, he'll be saying like, "Oh, yes, it's it's going to be great. It's going to be fantastic."
>> to be marvelous.
>> times the same sentence. "Oh, it's going to be marvelous. It's going to be the special." The fact that it's now a bit like hush hush hush >> Yeah.
>> makes me think that there is something going on that we don't know about.
>> Yeah.
>> Okay. And this is pure speculation.
>> How [ __ ] stupid do they think we are?
They taking me a [ __ ] and I'm not having it.
>> [ __ ] You think it's coming out at Christmas.
>> Well, it's not, [ __ ] >> loser. Just cuz you were Just cuz we told you it is, and you fell for it, idiot.
>> you [ __ ] >> Idiot, dumbass, loser.
>> Literally, like, come on.
>> Okay, great. Thanks, BBC.
Now, all the all the top Doctor Who YouTubers have been talking about it.
>> Have they? What have they been saying?
>> And I disagree because I say we haven't spoken about it yet. Am I right, folks?
Kill yourself.
I don't know what they've been saying.
Everyone People either agree or disagree.
>> I've seen some big ones >> I agree with what you said, basically.
>> I've seen some big ones saying like, "Oh, no, it's not true." And look, it's not true currently.
But where there's smoke, there's fire is what we always >> that when there's smoke, there's fire thing.
>> No, I didn't. I said it with David.
>> No, you [ __ ] >> I said it with you.
>> I started saying that saying on the podcast in series one.
>> No, I was I was saying >> I said it. I said it. That is not true.
Aiden, take accountability.
>> I was saying it for the 60th.
>> Oh, it works. You won.
>> When we learned that David was back, and then when Moffat was back, that's when I said where there's smoke, there's fire.
>> Right.
>> Yes.
>> I totally disagree with all that [ __ ] I said it.
>> [screaming] >> I said where there's smoke, there's fire, [ __ ] >> Kill your Kill your Kill your >> That Let's just say that button never has any dust on it.
>> [laughter] >> Most used sound bite.
>> used.
>> It's just >> so [ __ ] isn't it? Like >> Yeah, the Yeah.
>> It's like It's not Nothing's going well.
We're in the worst timeline.
>> No, broken.
>> Is it Is it actually just Are they pulling the wool over our eyes for a wilderness years too? Do you believe that No one wants to play the doctor? I do kind of believe that.
>> No, that's stuff I found [ __ ] My mom's calling me, so I'll put her on speaker.
>> Let's do it. Let's go.
>> Um Let's Hey Mom, you're on the podcast.
Oh, she >> [laughter] >> She hung up as she was >> hold on. Hold on. Hold on. Let me get her back. Let me get her back. Let me get her back.
>> [laughter] >> First Call his mom now. Aiden's mom.
>> Yeah, I'll get her back. Don't worry.
Hello, Mom.
>> Hi, this is James' phone.
>> What is this woke woke nonsense?
Okay.
Never mind. My phone's got a mind of its own right now. Interesting. Okay, well, never mind.
>> We were trying to get a call in from Aiden's mom to give us her thoughts on is Russell T Davies for the [ __ ] >> Yeah, that's that's what I asked her.
>> That's That's That's the person we need on.
>> I'll ask her, is Doctor Who coming out at Christmas?
And then we'll we'll find out. Um Yeah, interesting. Yeah, I I think it's just yeah, probably I think this article is probably based on [ __ ] but I do think it comes from a place of like genuine Yeah, it's getting a bit dire out there and it's probably it might not come out.
And I and I think I don't think we I don't think we're getting an Easter 2027 special. I think it's either coming out this >> What? No.
>> I think it's either coming out this year or not at all.
>> getting anything at Easter. Stop [ __ ] lying. You're such idiots. I'm sick of Doctor Who Twitter.
>> I don't want any Easter special.
>> It should [ __ ] end.
>> [ __ ] an Easter special.
>> I don't I'm so sick of hearing it of like all this tidbits from the peanut gallery. You want you want opinions? You come here. Don't go anywhere else.
>> These are opinions that you just have to agree with.
>> Yeah, I'm sick of it. This [ __ ] It's just such crap. Sick of it. I just I'd rather like I'd rather just like not worry about it anymore. Yeah. Although, because I do this show, it kind of becomes a part of my life. You know, I walk down the street, people come up to me and they say, "I know who you are."
It's just so hard, you know.
>> [laughter] >> No word of a lie, I was on a I was on a shoot today, right?
>> Oh, no.
>> And um there was someone with like a bit of tech gear on and he he was like he was like a trader. He was like, "It feels very sci-fi."
>> Yeah.
>> It's like one of those uh one of those things from Doctor Who. And I like bit my tongue from being an idiot and say anything. And then it was like kind of quiet for 30 seconds and I was like, "Oh, you mean Cyberman?"
And he said, [snorts] "No, I don't know what that is." And I was like, "Oh."
"Dalek?" He goes, "Yeah, the Dalek."
>> I thought you were going to say you got noticed.
>> No, [snorts] but it was just like a very awkward thing and then like someone was like, "Oh, someone knows their Doctor Who." And I was like, "You don't know the half of it."
>> Oh, yeah. Only a few people at work know.
It got leaked.
>> A lot of a lot of my work know. This this was clients.
>> Oh, this was clients. I see. Yeah, my YouTube channel got leaked. I I didn't want people >> loser loser Conner Conner's loser cave?
>> No, it was I don't No, it was I told my work friend Hannah and at the work party she was like something along the lines of like Conner's YouTube channel and I was like, "Hannah, for [ __ ] sake, I told you not to say anything." And said it in front of someone who then told someone else, told someone else.
It's now Now that it's out there, okay?
I have a Doctor Who podcast.
>> Did you whip out one of these?
>> Kill yourself.
>> In a respectful manner, I did not do that.
We're peace and love. I did not do that.
This is a serious message. We're peace and love, peace and love.
This is my first beer. And but people probably think I come in sloshed. That is That is false and I will sue you for defamation.
>> Not my first beer.
>> Aiden's back on the beers again. Aiden's back on the beers again. And I'm just I'm trying to fill time, I guess.
>> No, it's fine. There's no time to fill.
>> Cuz I which is funny cuz I actually do have a lot to say.
>> About Planet of Fire?
>> Yes.
>> All right, shall we do it cuz like no one needs to hear us talk about Christmas Battle speculation again.
>> Yeah, because everyone already knows about that battle.
>> We've done it so many times and like literally nothing has changed.
>> Well, a [ __ ] changed.
It's now canceled, so >> Allegedly, lawyers stay away. Let's talk about Planet of Fire.
>> Goodnight, girls and boys.
>> Planet of Fire is the fifth serial of the 21st season of the British science fiction television series Doctor Who was first broadcast in four twice weekly parts on BBC One from the 23rd of February to the 2nd of March, 1984.
In the serial, the Doctor's old enemy, the Master, plots to use the volcanic gases on the planet Sun to renew his body after accidentally shrinking himself in an experiment. Obviously, we have Peter Davison back as the Fifth Doctor, Mark Strickson as Vis- Vislor Turlough, Nicola Bryant introduced in the first ever story, Peri Brown, and you guessed it, the Chameleon's back, played by Gerald Flood. And not only that, the Master, played by Anthony Ainley.
This is written by Peter Grimwade and directed Do you know who it's directed by?
>> Uh uh not Graham Harper, he does next week.
>> It's not directed by Graham Harper.
>> He doesn't That's why I said >> But I think it'll be interesting for the for for a point that you're going to make later in the show.
>> What point?
>> This was directed by a woman called Fiona [ __ ] >> I didn't I didn't I didn't do I did I did look at Connor's fact corner, but there was nothing really to talk about.
So, there is no Connor's >> I kind of have some fact corner for you.
>> Wait, because it was directed by a female?
>> That's my fact.
>> Fantastic. I knew I did read that Graham was going to do it and then did next week's episode.
>> No, but my the the female part, that will come back.
>> Okay.
>> That will come back. Um >> It's weird that he said that.
>> I'd never seen this one before.
>> Okay.
>> Uh neither had you.
>> Uh that's true, I haven't. Every episode we watch of classic Doctor Who I've never seen before. I've seen this episode before.
>> Probably [laughter] was the episode other than uh next week.
>> Yeah.
>> The episode that I was probably most excited for. Oh, maybe Resurrection of the Ah!
I was I was just keen. I was hyped for this one. I was hyped to see this one.
Planet of Fire, you know me, I love volcanoes.
Uh ooh volcanoes >> Volcanoes, yeah.
>> And like I you also know me.
European >> Oh, my fact.
>> Get me some European >> fact corner.
>> location filming >> boring me >> Get that in my blood.
Volcanoes. Get that in me.
>> No, no, no.
>> all three.
European location filming on volcanoes.
This could be a [ __ ] barn burner of a story.
What was it?
>> The suspense is here.
>> I very much enjoyed this a lot. I was I was riding that that lava magma wave.
>> Magma.
>> All the way down. Yeah, make America great again. I thought it was seriously just a lot of fun.
>> Yeah.
>> Like the it's cool one where it's like goodbye. Goodbye Turlough. Hello Peri.
>> Hello Peri.
>> Hello the Mediterranean.
Let's have a swim.
>> Yeah, that's true.
>> And then you throw in like, you know, Peter Davison's last one. All these like 80s >> penultimate >> Oh, yeah, sorry, penultimate one. All these like 80s who who story seasons.
The final season of each doctor is always weird.
But the the unlike New Who where it's like you get a new doctor and a new companion and it like starts anew and then that doctor and companion, they might go to the end of the era or that companion might get cut halfway through and a new one comes in but quite often the companion leaves with the doctor or at least some form of arc is wrapped up there. Whereas this is very different alongside Tom Baker and Colin Baker where they introduce the new companions before you get the new doctor. And so these last seasons keep turning into like [snorts] weird eras of change and I kind of like it.
Connor [ __ ] me.
I'm trying to just have a simple conversation.
>> me to tears.
>> Oh my god.
I don't even need the sound bite. Kill yourself.
>> Let the real man talk here.
>> Uh all right, real man.
>> get demonetized.
>> Real man that's being summoned by his daddy to leave the podcast early. [ __ ] me. [laughter] What do you think?
Going into this episode >> Yeah.
>> spoiled by BBC iPlayer, unintentionally again. Okay, it's a joke on this podcast. This idiot not you for once, I mean >> Right.
>> looks at IMDb spoilers for no reason. Why do you do it to yourself?
Literally in the picture Well, I saw Perry, who I didn't know was going to be in it. And I saw the Master, who wasn't going to be in it.
Two things that I really wish I didn't know.
>> in part four, you saw Victor waving.
>> Oh, finally.
>> Goodbye.
>> Uh well, there you go. Thank god. And I Well, I didn't I guess I think that didn't get spoiled as the robot.
>> Chameleon.
>> Yeah, Nimo. Yeah, I didn't know until I saw >> who I guess had been set up before.
>> Yeah, but like he's not been in the season at all, then all of a sudden he's just like hanging out in the toilet.
>> Ah ah ah, he's on the floor like C-3PO and was like >> As soon as I saw him, I was like, "Have you just been [ __ ] sat in here for like a season, bro?"
>> So, last week Well, not last week on the show, but last episode that we did I said how much I loved the episode >> Mhm.
>> and how great I thought it was.
And I know I haven't watched it, but I know people a lot of people say that the the Caves of Androzani >> Mhm.
>> is one of, if not the greatest episodes of classic Who. In fact, I think it was on IMDb, which I love to mention, the highest for a very long time.
>> Mhm.
>> This serial is drumroll, please [ __ ] awesome.
>> Hell yeah, brother.
>> This is such a great >> Why the [ __ ] is no one talking about Planet of Fire?
>> I'll tell you what.
How enjoyable is this? It's so so great.
So, the Master returns for the first time since Tom Baker.
>> No, no, no, no.
>> No, no, no, no, no.
But, first time that I've seen him since Tom Baker, at least.
Last time I saw him mechanically.
>> you saw him in Castrovalva.
>> When?
>> And you saw him in The Five Doctors.
>> Oh, [ __ ] me. Yeah, true. Whatever.
>> And he's in other ones as well.
>> Okay, let's just pretend I didn't say that. Okay. All that [ __ ] is true.
>> Yeah.
>> But, how great to see him again. I know he's overused, and I know his like antics are a bit overdone.
>> But, there's something about it.
>> But, there was just something about it.
>> Something about Anthony Ainley doing his thing. When he's like when he's like commanding the room, and he's like waving his hands around and all that.
>> I love his suit.
>> It's fantastic. The small miniature.
>> Yeah.
>> It's fantastic seeing Peri, who >> Opus.
>> forgot how much I loved her as a companion.
>> Mhm.
>> And it makes sense [clears throat] now with knowing that regeneration is coming next.
I've seen all of Trial of the Time Lord, not to flex.
>> Whoa, that's crazy. You've seen an entire season of television?
Whoa, no one's done that before.
>> Thank you, Roy. So, I do know Peri quite well.
>> Mhm.
>> So, when I saw her again, I was very excited.
She's great. Turlough's great.
>> Yeah, Turlough's great in this one.
>> Peter Davison is great. His look >> Great fit.
>> Dude, the fit. The suspenders. Homie looks hot. He's rocking around. I'm like >> Sucky teeth.
>> Does this Doctor like Do I only start to like this Doctor near the end of his run? Cuz I feel like I'm not going to like him in his first season, which I haven't seen much of. I've only seen the first serial.
This season so far I've done a lot of this crap.
I've done a lot of it, okay?
>> Mhm.
>> And can I just say so far this season, I think has been the strongest >> Mhm.
>> that I've personally seen. Maybe analytics and Aidan's dumbass ex all >> Are you saying Sorry, are you saying this story or this season?
>> This whole season. I think so far has been really good.
>> Hectic.
>> I think so. I think we've had It's so weird to have >> Sea Devil fight.
>> Yeah.
>> And then we went to uh was it the awakening after that that that weird >> Yeah.
>> The little fight the comedy one.
>> I admit it doesn't start incredible.
>> we had the one what the [ __ ] was it called when they were on that like planet and it's like media showers and stuff.
>> Yeah.
>> That was not bad.
>> It's pretty good.
>> Pretty good and then I think it was resurrection from there. And then this and then we'll see how the designer goes.
>> And then there's two [clears throat] with Colin or just one?
>> Just one one with Colin.
>> Just one. I think look it's hard enough to get one.
This is this is this is how much I enjoyed this cereal. This is actually there's very rare episodes or cereals of classic who that I would show a new who fan who's not into classic who.
And I think it's bearable and I think it's worth watching. There's only a few.
Survival horror friend rock three doctors five doctors. I would say this.
>> Mhm.
>> I genuinely like even if it's something like Genesis I think I think I know people are going to kill me for saying it.
>> Yeah.
>> But I think something like this is a lot more enjoyable than Genesis.
>> I I'm going to lie totally agree cuz you know me my >> I'm full of facts baby.
>> My favorite classic cereal which isn't an original opinion is city of death.
And I >> That's another good one.
>> that one and and this one's very similar to that in terms of tone and >> Location filming as well.
>> European location filming.
>> Yeah which looks stunning by the way.
You can tell that they actually went somewhere.
>> film >> I bet it looks stunning.
>> Fantastic. It's all done on film and you know how much I want you know how I like a classic who story when I I finish it and I'm like I'm not done yet and I go and check out some behind the scenes.
>> No.
>> I watched yeah the the director Fiona and I think it was the production designer >> Uh-huh.
>> back in like 2010 or something they took them back to the locations and they walked around talking about it.
>> That's awesome.
>> It was just cool so they just a 10 minute short thing.
>> That's amazing.
>> But really cool.
>> No that's that's honestly the location filming looks stunning. There's just a great vibe to the episode.
>> what's really great about it as well?
>> Go ahead, Aidan.
>> Classic Who. You know, classic Who gets too much slack of like they don't do the companions enough of a farewell.
Sometimes that's justified, but sometimes they do get really beautiful scenes, but those beautiful scenes always feel tacked on to like a an episode. Might be a great episode, but it never has any >> Normally just an ending >> It's usually just a random scene where they're like, "Time to go, Doctor."
>> Normally when they're about to walk into the TARDIS.
>> For Turlough, the fact that like the arc is kind of built around him him leaving.
>> It goes full circle.
>> It does.
>> Yeah, it makes it makes sense.
>> The Tom Baker story.
>> Correct.
>> Full circle.
>> Which I haven't seen.
>> You have.
>> I have.
>> It was Adric's first one.
>> I mean, I have seen it.
>> Adric's first one.
>> Ah, of course, final season type [ __ ] Okay, yeah, I have seen that. Not great.
>> No, [ __ ] >> Yeah, pretty crap. [snorts] I agree. It's like and there's just there's also there's also like there's hints of almost modern Who in this and and don't don't at me for this, but there's conversation between Turlough and the Doctor. One thing he says is "Will you miss Tegan or do you miss Tegan?" Feels very reminiscent of of now new Who, a similar scene that would happen there. And also, he questions him about Gallifrey. Why doesn't he go back?
>> Yeah.
>> What's the deal with that? Again, very reminiscent of of new Who.
Um that's why I would recommend it to someone who I don't know people watch this and don't watch the stories or don't watch classic Who.
I don't know if you notice I do this sometimes. I'm like, "You should watch this one." Because I feel like I'm a bit more of a fan >> out as one that you should watch.
>> I'm a bit more of a fan than you are for classic Who.
>> Yeah.
>> Obviously.
>> Yeah.
>> Uh but I [snorts and clears throat] I would 100% say like this is one of the best classic Who serials. Like it's really great and and I think the location film is like the the on the cake.
>> Yeah. It just looks looks stunning. It sounds stunning.
Um let's talk about the plot a little bit.
>> Go ahead.
>> So, they arrive They're originally in uh in Spain.
Right?
>> Español.
>> Español.
Uh and they uh end up like traveling through time to the planets to different planet, which is where Turlough's like, "Oh, this could be where I'm from."
>> Mhm.
>> Question. And there's like a tribe that all uh you know, praises and looks up to a symbol that Turlough has on his arm.
>> Yeah.
>> Turns out, crazy history plot twist, Turlough's family are like refugees, like prisoners of war from from like a war on their own planet, and they've been sent They were sent to the planet for prison a prison sentence, and like they were all these civilians all thought that these guys were like, you know, Jesus coming down from another planet when they were sent down and banished down there.
Uh and so like Turlough finds his brother as a result of it. Like it's just so >> His brother, that was very interesting.
>> Yeah.
>> The mark on the arm.
>> Yeah, yeah, yeah.
>> So funny. Had that been shown in other episodes?
>> I don't think so.
>> Yeah, okay. Cuz I was like I hadn't seen this yet, and I know he was Turlough was there before the Five Doctors.
>> Yeah, yeah, yeah.
>> He mentions being in a boarding school or something.
>> Yeah, that's his first one in like Mordred on on Gorgon on Dragon >> Right. So, he gets like banished to like a boarding school or something.
>> Something like that. Yeah, the Brig there.
>> Have you seen it? Oh, really?
>> Yeah, yeah. Yeah, I've seen it.
>> I've seen this episode before.
>> [gasps] >> Uh so that's a good >> with a Peter Davison episode?
>> Yeah.
>> Interesting.
>> Yeah.
>> Interesting. Cuz he doesn't pop up much after >> Yeah, after after Terror of the Zygons.
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah.
>> Interesting.
>> What did you think of Perry Brown?
>> ticking them >> What did you think of Perry Brown's introduction?
>> [snorts] >> Fantastic.
>> Care to expand?
>> Yeah, and the fantastic, great.
>> Would you like to have words with the costume designer?
>> No.
Not personally.
>> I So, here's what happened. I watched the serial. I saw one shot in it and went can't wait to hear Connor talk about this shot.
>> joking? You actually thought that?
>> Yes. I did. And then lo and behold, the next day open up a group chat and Connor sent in the shot into the group chat.
>> [laughter] >> You didn't reply. You didn't reply.
>> I thought I'd save it for this moment.
>> Oh, I literally at the pub last night down I was like, "I didn't even [ __ ] reply that."
>> No, I didn't want to spoil the chat. I didn't want to spoil the pub chat.
>> I like that.
On iPlayer for some reason it's the thumbnail. What a great What a great thumbnail that will make. And that's what they used to do back in the day. They used to do that so people would click.
And probably till this day they do it.
I I You couldn't screen record on iPlayer, which is like very rare. If you use any streaming apps and you go to like screen record it's like a photo.
>> Yeah, you can't.
>> It just comes up as black. For some reason you can do it on iPlayer. So, for research purposes only I recorded that scene, put it in the group chat. I was like, "Isn't it insane?" I didn't really say it to give me credit. I was like, "Isn't it insane how much they sexualize Perry?"
>> And this is where I set something up earlier.
>> Great.
>> Directed by Fiona [ __ ] a woman.
So, I do wonder whether it is the gaze of the director or the gaze of the viewer.
>> It's um >> Yeah, cuz I only thought I thought there was only one shot in there where I was like, "All right, we're showing >> There was one and that was it.
>> other than that it was fine.
>> It was fine.
>> Okay, so we've covered >> Perry Brown.
>> Perry Brown. What about Perry Brown?
>> Gordon Brown, fine temptress.
>> What about Howard?
>> Uh I read a thing. This is really dark.
>> Okay.
>> I read a thing on Connor's cancelled fat corner, back soon, >> Mhm.
>> that he's like some kind of like predator.
>> Right.
>> Did you get that impression?
>> Like uh >> I don't know, sexual or physical.
>> Like in the script or the actor?
>> No, no, no. Uh the script, like his character. Howard has like a um >> Interesting.
>> inappropriate relationship with Peri.
Almost took a bath with him.
>> call him like Father Howard or something.
>> Yeah.
>> So, but I didn't know whether it was like a school thing.
>> I'll find it.
>> I didn't know. Yeah, very curious about that.
>> I probably should have just done Connor's fat corner at this point.
>> have, instead of just doing it live on the pod. She had a great drowning scene, which looked beautiful on the Blu-ray.
>> Yeah, I bet it did.
>> You see um you see bloody >> You see everything.
>> You see Visla, Visatolo, Visatolo taking off his getting into his tighty whities >> They're so tight.
>> and going for a swim.
>> They're insanely tight.
>> He might as well have just showed his nuts.
>> I have no issue with that, but >> Yeah, but you loved it.
>> I'm not judging you. I'm just saying everyone else is going on.
>> But do you have your uh >> Yeah, I'm finding it.
>> Oh, he's finding it. Okay. Um but that I thought was like a fun introduction. The one thing I'd say is that like we saw her go through the whole story and there's not a lot of Peri and the Doctor meeting. And that's something you kind of want in a in a first >> just like, "Yeah, I'll I'll I'll Can I please, Doctor, can I travel with you?"
>> And he's like, "Well, I've got no one [ __ ] else, so."
>> Which is funny because like he dies next week.
>> Mhm.
>> It's like she's really getting like introduced to this uh guy just to be [ __ ] killed.
>> Yeah. Actually, have you found your fact?
>> It's coming.
>> God, it's >> You just got to talk in the end.
>> Yeah, I'll I'll talk. Uh so, looked beautiful, colors looked beautiful.
Also, the AI remaster on the on the set looked good on this one.
>> Uh-oh.
>> More More AI More AI, I say.
>> AI.
>> As he loves AI for more things.
>> No, man. Don't say it.
>> More things.
>> Don't say it, A.
>> So, that's great. Um I thought the sets look really nice as well. Usually, when we go from the cuz this is what happens with classic Who, right? These great location filming ones. Here's the structure. Episode one, shot mostly on location. Episode two, 50/50. 50% location, 50% they're introducing some sets in the studio.
And then episode three, it's all studio bound pound, and that's where I want a neck. And then episode four is when it's mostly studio bound, but a few bits of location shoots. That's the formula I've seen in there. And uh so, usually by the time it it gets to episode three, it loses me a little bit. Um no one gives a [ __ ] about what I'm saying. Why don't you just tell me?
>> So, it says here this is from a Doctor Who novel called Shell Shock.
>> Right.
>> It says in >> with Earthshock.
>> That's That's true. They're They're not to be confused. They're >> It's Earthshock, but >> for >> for crabs.
>> Don't don't get confused.
>> Crabs.
>> In prose, Shell Shock it is strongly implied that Howard sexually abused Peri when she was younger.
Some read this as supporting Peri's strange behavior in the story where she shouts out Howard's name after saying, "Don't turn out the light." However, by blah blah blah No, Howard, please don't leave me alone.
Uh it's somewhat unlikely that a person plagued by parental abuse would be begging for all of their abusers to stay with her. So, it's very dark, as well.
>> So, there's an expanded media thing that hints that perhaps there was something.
>> Yeah.
>> You know, it takes a interesting take for someone to be like, "Hey, we're going to commission you to write a like Doctor Who prequel."
>> Yeah.
>> And like, "Sure, I'll make one of the characters a predator."
>> A little weird, eh?
>> Yeah.
>> It kind of ruined Corner's fact corner for this week.
>> Why? You got too sad reading it?
>> Blame it on that, not my laziness.
>> Or your dad.
>> No, it wasn't Yeah, it wasn't lazy. I actually I went through and I read it all. That's how I knew that fact. How do you think I knew that?
Pure luck? I doubt it.
>> I'll pay Yeah, mostly my father. Nothing like that.
Um >> He's flying to get his teeth done.
>> Where is he going for it?
>> Uh I can't uh uh Where is he going?
>> Bali.
>> Vietnam.
>> Damn.
>> I just played the Black Ops 1 campaign, so I'm worried about him going there.
>> Yeah, no, well, that was a long time ago, so I'm sure he'll be okay. I don't know if you know, but the Vietnam War is now over.
>> No way.
>> Is he going on his own?
>> Yes, he asked me to come with him. And I said I said no.
>> Oh.
>> I'm not much of a traveler, you know this.
>> I know, but it would be great. Think about the podcast you could do over there.
>> I ate them in Vietnam.
>> Doctor Who from Vietnam.
Yeah, very good.
>> Vietnam story Doctor Who could have done that one.
>> I don't think there is.
Untapped potential.
>> Give me Give me the writing reins and I'll give you a banging story.
>> a Vietnamese Doctor Who story.
>> Is Alex Mason there?
>> Even Top Gear's Top Gear Top Gear has done a Vietnam special.
>> What about Frank Woods?
>> Frank's Sinatra.
>> Uh Frank E. Sinatra.
>> Frankie Boyle.
>> Uh Frank E. Sinatra.
>> Yeah, um so like Chameleon becomes the Master. That's a whole thing happening.
And Howard. Yeah, Chameleon is evolving a lot.
>> Chris, have I watched the episode that I know this [ __ ] >> Yes, yes, thank you for confirming.
>> Thank you. Only one time I didn't.
Watched two episodes, that's it.
>> So, that's good.
>> Mhm.
>> Anything else?
>> Uh Not really.
>> There's blue flames blue flames that were supposed to >> who walks in them.
>> Yes.
>> Again, Chris, have I watched the episode?
>> Yeah, well done. Very very nice very nice very good very good very >> I watched three episodes in a row, that's how much I liked it.
>> Do you know that's good? I watched four in a day.
>> See, there you go. This is proof. I watched three in a row.
>> The one in the morning.
>> Yeah?
>> I was I was a work from home day, so I watched one in the morning.
>> One at lunch and one at dinner.
>> Well, one Yeah.
One when I finished work and then like one Yeah, around around in the evening.
>> Yeah, you had meat and five veg for the day. You had You had your Doctor Who fix.
>> Except it's just four episodes of Doctor Who.
>> Well, you watched two at dinner then.
>> Well, one like before dinner, one after.
>> So, one at dinner and one at supper.
>> No one gives a [ __ ] about what I'm saying right now.
>> dinner, and supper.
>> Fun fact about this one though.
>> Yeah.
>> This is good actually because uh when we do uh when we used to review New Who, we'd have great stories to go along with it and that was what I That was part of the fun of those. Like our first time going to see this episode at the movies or something like that.
>> Yeah.
>> This one I sort of did a lie at the start of the show.
>> Huh.
>> Part four I had sort of seen before.
>> Interesting.
>> When I was 6 years old.
>> The suffer stories.
>> I had just moved to Australia.
>> Mhm.
>> It was one of the very first days only series one of Doctor Who had come out.
Christopher Eccleston and I'd become a Whovian after one season.
>> Who is he?
>> Don't know. He didn't last long, did he?
>> [laughter] >> And then um I moved to Australia. Been in Australia for like a week. It's pissing down, middle of winter.
>> That would have been weird move from the UK.
>> And it's pissing down.
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah.
>> Your parents like >> Why did we move? It's still raining.
>> Yeah.
>> What's going on?
>> But I'm feeling a bit lost in this new town, all right? Bit >> Oh, bollocks.
>> Bit distant, bit not quite fit in, haven't started school yet. So, still finding my feet.
>> Yeah, yeah.
>> Sat down at dinner, having my dinner.
Nom nom nom nom nom.
What do I hear coming from the living room?
>> Doctor Who.
Ain't this first class of Who story?
>> So, I poke my head out and I see Peter Davison running around and I see lava going down some cliffs.
>> Mhm.
>> So, this and I could tell you that that was two shots that I saw watching this that I could have told you were in this episode purely cuz I remember watching as a 6-year-old.
And it was like a when I saw that as a kid, it was like a oh, Doctor Who, like I'm I'm home. You know, and it was it was on ABC, it was playing on ABC.
>> Back when ABC played classic Doctor Who.
>> Yeah, and this is why Peter Davison has a soft spot in my heart cuz it was the first thing of classic Who I ever saw.
And um really in a in a time where I was still finding my feet, this episode uh pulled through.
>> Well, that's very beautiful. And I can >> That's it.
>> almost shed a tear.
>> There. It was >> how beautiful that was.
>> That's kind >> It was very beautiful.
>> Mhm.
>> I had never seen this episode before. I don't have that.
>> Oh, well, that's nice. Always good to share share >> I remember watching Horror of Fang Rock part one with my >> Yeah, you said this, didn't >> auntie in 2016. And after the end of part one, we both looked to each other and then we turned the TV off.
>> Too scary.
>> No.
>> Too scary.
>> 18.
>> Yeah.
>> Too be scary.
>> Would you ever want to go to uh to Spain, to Lanzarote? It's not Lanzarote, is it? It's >> I've been thinking a lot about what I want to spend my super money >> Lanzarote.
What do you want to spend your super mon- super money on?
So, when you're like 60, 70?
>> If I'm lucky, 70.
Yeah, it's like your superannuation.
I've been thinking a lot about it.
>> Right.
>> Yeah, I know it's dumb. I know it's weird. This is even a bit. It's not a bit.
>> Fore planning.
>> It's not a bit.
>> Respect some advanced planning.
>> I I want to go to Italy. I want to >> But why do you want to do it when you're old and like can't move versus doing it as a young gun?
>> You're not wrong, Aim. Well, first of all, who do I go with?
>> You go on your own.
>> I don't want to go on my own. [ __ ] that.
I I've spent enough time on myself, which is I like I like being by myself.
>> I'm a boss at Call of Duty Zombies. I enjoy my my free time, but I don't want to go alone. I I want to >> That's fine. If solo travel is not for you, that's fine.
>> I'm not going on this Contiki to a to you know, >> find sex >> cafe yeah exactly I can I can find that down the road or in Busselton like last time.
>> Well >> [laughter] >> Oh no.
>> I don't know. Do I need Why would I go there for that when I go to Busselton?
>> Fair. No, but you're in the India Europe it's romantic.
>> India Oh yeah.
>> In Europe it's romantic.
>> Yeah, I don't know man. I mean >> someone you might meet a European lovely lovely person.
>> have fallen for a girl before who isn't in my country and it sucks.
>> No, but then don't Yeah. Well >> hard not to I'm such an emotional person I wear my heart on my sleeve.
>> Yeah, someone looks at you and you're like marry me.
>> I love you.
>> I love I love >> love you.
>> I love >> I'm just so in love with you. You're the only girl for me.
>> Huh? [laughter] >> [gasps] >> But then all right, give it that. If you find a partner in the next couple of years >> Yeah, if >> Sorry, when you find >> If >> when you find a partner in the next couple of years >> Yes.
>> If you guys, you know, settle down, find a place and you're like 30 and you'll go all right, let's go to Europe.
Would you then go with them or >> 100% If we go >> She's like kind of I love you. Let's go to Europe and you're like we can do that in 30 years.
>> Absolutely not. Absolutely not. If I do want to wait to like get like a partner to be like before we before we take things a bit too seriously with like savings, let's go to Europe. 100% Go visit my family UK. Just right now with me, I'm kind of focused on I've been at my age of 30 year now. I love it and I mean I'm probably a little too like focused on work.
>> And you're also focused on saving for your super.
>> Haha yeah well where does that come from Aiden?
>> Mhm.
>> Yeah, exactly. So I'm a little focused on that right now. But then you know, I definitely want to to to go and do that eventually. I don't want to wait till I'm old to go to Italy, but if it does take that long.
But also I'm not I'm I'm as much of a traveler as you. I can't I get nervous.
I I I I start to like freak out.
I can't do it all, you know.
>> I had an old man try and >> You did?
>> smash me in Italy.
>> You're very beautiful.
>> Very handsome man. Are you sure you were alone?
>> Well, no one else is here.
>> Yeah.
>> Good for you, eh? See, I don't know what I'd do in that situation. I'd be like, am I going to die?
That's how I felt in Brussels, too.
>> I should have hit him up with a like, yeah, no, let's smash. You go away in that corner and I'll >> I'll be right there.
>> Yeah, that's that's what I'll do next time.
And I'll And I'll just run.
>> But that's got nothing to do with Spain.
>> No, so >> [laughter] >> I'll ask a question again.
>> Sure.
>> Would you ever go to Lanzarote?
>> It looks absolutely stunning.
>> It does. It does.
>> But also, Australia's very stunning.
>> Yeah, but there's something about going to Europe.
>> I love I'm sure I'm sure.
Beautiful and holiday and romantic There is parts of Europe that Australia can't capture and that's fine.
>> How are the European parts?
>> Yeah, and Guinness and Ireland, you know, like you know, that that's definitely a thing that I want to do.
I like to think that like I'm more of a do it later on in your life because like my youth didn't really I guess I'd be lying if I said it turned out how I thought it would and that's not necessarily a good or a bad thing, but you know, I think I definitely will get there eventually. It's not like it's never going to happen.
Um I've always done things like a few years behind everybody else. I've always been like that, so.
>> You'll get there.
>> This is like the 50% therapy podcast.
>> Deep deep deep. We need We need like a sting.
>> I need that therapy sting.
>> 50% therapy podcast is just the Sopranos theme.
>> Ah, I love Sopranos.
>> Yeah, don't be back.
>> Hey, Tony.
>> Tony. All right, Connor. Let's get you out of here. What would you give Fires the Fires Oh, sorry. Sorry, before we say that.
>> Yeah.
>> Um Did you ever see the documentary, Fire of Love?
>> No.
>> Great documentary. It's about like a a couple that are like volcano hunters.
They love volcanoes. And it's in like the '70s or something. And they take film cameras with them to get as close as possible to volcanoes.
>> Insane.
>> And they're literally like standing on the cliffs looking into volcanoes. It's [ __ ] insane, man.
Um and like this I think it's well cuz all the locations stuff set on fire film.
Um >> He proposed just as the uh volcano erupted.
>> Well, they did die.
>> Oh my god.
>> die. Definitely recommend it. It might be on Disney. It might be on Disney.
>> If it's National Geographic, it should be on Disney. Yeah. Yeah.
>> Yeah.
Uh anyways, yeah, what do you want to give Planet of Fire out of 10?
>> Uh I'm Oh god, this is hard.
Oh god. Eight and three quarters.
>> Wow, so like slightly more than last week. Is that what you're going for?
>> Well, I gave last week's >> 8.5.
>> Nine.
>> You want to give it a full nine?
>> Nine.
>> Drop the full nine on this one.
>> Yeah, this is this is pretty much as good as it gets, IMO.
>> Yeah.
>> And if you're not talking about it, you're a fool.
>> I'm going to put this uh Is it on par with last week or is it slightly better?
>> better.
>> You reckon?
>> In my opinion.
That's my opinion.
>> I'll give it a nine, [ __ ] it, cuz I too enjoyed it. Fist bump.
>> Come on, it is better than last week's, but last week is great.
>> It is. Yeah, two bangers.
>> Wow.
We did it. We did it.
>> took 20 21 seasons, but Classic Who's found its way.
Don't do that.
>> Why?
>> It just looks like a willy.
>> What's that?
>> Yeah, it looks like a >> Oh, I used to It took me a while to figure out how to do this.
>> I hate that.
>> Yeah.
>> Also, speaking of lava >> You have dark sake.
>> Watched Revenge of the Sith last night.
>> Let's go. This is where the fun begins.
>> Mustafar looks great. Looked fantastic on the OLED. Did not expect it to look that good. Oh, no.
What's that nerdy thing you said? It's like, is it an OLED or is it a >> QLED?
>> Yeah, QLED. Cuz there's a big difference.
>> [ __ ] QLED TVs.
>> There's a big difference. No, my movie's pretty good, actually.
I don't see anything.
>> Yeah, it's a pretty good movie.
>> Anyway, you're obsessed with lava.
>> Yes.
>> Mustafa?
>> Mustafar.
>> You're obsessed with it.
>> That's what That was the connection.
>> You were like, I know I need to watch Return of the Sith.
>> now I've been rewatching the prequels.
Watch all three.
>> Are you getting ready for Mandalorian, Grogu?
>> Yeah, pop pop pop.
>> Macaroni and Grogu.
Baby Yoda. Meow.
>> Yeah. Yeah, I will.
>> Macaroni and Grogu.
>> I'll form my own opinion after watching it. All right?
>> on, mate.
>> I'll tell you if it's good or bad.
>> I'll go and look at your Letterboxd.
>> Yes, do.
>> Were you upset that your Letterboxd go down this week?
>> I didn't notice it. I don't sit there >> Yeah, you do. Yes, you do.
>> I check it like once a week, I want to say.
>> Yes, you do.
>> Like I log stuff as I watch it, but then only probably once a week do I go who's posted what. Cuz you don't follow Like people don't watch movies like they do post on online. So, like you can only refresh it that many times.
>> If I got one, which I won't, would you check out what I watched?
>> No, I wouldn't give [ __ ] >> Yeah. Not after everything that you've given Letterboxd. I could not let you have >> Well, I wouldn't do it. I'd say >> I'd just [ __ ] block you.
>> I'm so sick of that [ __ ] app.
>> I'm blocking you just >> It's for pretentious wankers.
>> It's not cuz it's funny. Like you have a laugh on it.
>> You know who >> And if any if anything, you can just log what you've watched.
>> No, yeah, it's so hard to remember.
>> Cuz I've been using Letterboxd for eight years, all right?
>> Oh, one of the OGs, huh?
>> Yeah, that's me. I made Letterboxd.
>> You might as well have made it, yeah.
>> the first Letterboxd.
>> Yeah, okay.
>> So, I love going like a movie like The Prequels being like, "Huh, when did I last watch this?" Like 2020 or something. I'll have look. I've never logged it before.
>> Oh wow.
>> So then I'm like wow, it's been over 8 years since I watched it.
>> know? Yeah, wow.
>> Crazy scenes.
>> Yeah, yeah. You How would you know?
Thank god it's got Letterboxd. Who cares about Letterboxd?
Stahmaus is like uh Cur- Kern Kernis Ronquest who I can't stand.
Oh, I use Letterboxd. I like film Oh, I ran into Timothy Chalamet in the streets of New York and got a picture. Who cares? And that loser will pass me over like you suck, bro. You're overrated.
>> I was at a at a party on the weekend and someone looked exactly like Timothy Chalamet.
>> I bet everyone thought that he sucked.
>> Yeah, everyone said who's this Who's this Everyone said >> Kill yourself.
>> Everyone said Timothy Chalamet, more like two Is it three >> Timothy Timothy go away.
>> Is it three Oscar losses now?
>> Probably.
>> Or two.
>> He's a good actor to be fair.
>> Nah, not good.
>> Call me by your name.
>> I'm better.
>> That's a great movie.
>> Nah. Nah, he's got nothing on me.
>> All right, next week folks, we will be doing Sarah Jane Adventures Death of the Doctor.
>> Matt Smith, baby. Written by Russell T Davies.
>> Guess who's back. Matt is back.
>> Matt again.
>> Matt again. Matt is back. Matt again.
>> It's good to see Russell here is right like a Matt Smith.
>> Matt is back. Matt >> What's the doctor say some weird [ __ ] like um >> Alons-y.
>> I love family. [laughter] >> Matt Smith says Alons-y.
>> Yeah, Alons-y. Then we just go do a throw back with Joe Grant which is cool.
>> Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. True, true, true.
>> And Iron Fist is in it.
>> Apparently so.
>> Yeah, I could tell >> big big alien vultures.
>> Big birds and not the ones you see in primary school.
>> But Any- Anyone watch that pod? Removal pod?
>> Just me but it actually >> Just me?
No worries.
>> Two people watched it. A people care which is nice but >> I edited that so quickly and so late.
>> Good for you, man.
>> I did it last night. Slip slop slap, up it went.
>> how you did the uh comment at the beginning. That was pretty >> Yeah, I kept the piss comment in.
>> Kind of grace. Which is funny cuz I I generally did not think that was That was a If you want to get the rawest interaction between me and Aiden, watch the first few seconds of the Primeval podcast because that is That's generally not something I ever thought would be in it. When I clipped it, I was like, "Lovely, Aiden."
>> But it's pretty much just how we are off camera.
>> Pretty much, yeah.
>> As you say something and then I say something probably slightly offensive.
>> Yeah.
>> And then um >> Yeah, pissing on hands is offensive.
>> No, but you get the deal.
You get the deal.
>> Kind of.
>> Uh so yeah, Sarah Jane is next week, guys.
>> I'm sorry.
>> Thank you all for watching. Subscribe, like, comment, uh do all the stuff. Uh don't forget we're here every Sunday.
>> It used to be Thursdays, I can't remember that.
>> Used to be Mondays.
>> Oh, Mondays.
My bad.
>> Got a case of the Mondays.
>> Yeah, no one wants to watch podcasts on Mondays, too.
>> Well, my pitch was always it was like you'd watch it on your commute on on a Monday morning. That's what my pitch was.
>> does.
>> Well, that was Yeah, that was what I did with a lot of podcasts. It was something to look forward to the start of the week. But then no one was watching it.
>> Well, podcasts I watch uploads like practically every day, so >> Yeah, that's great. And it's just you watching it.
>> No, they're huge. What do you mean?
>> You're watching those silly [ __ ] >> 30 fresh, baby.
>> Cringe.
>> I'm completely alone.
This isn't OG [ __ ] You can't buy this at >> What What about the shirt?
>> That's what it says. I'm completely alone.
>> No, but what does the shirt say?
>> I'm completely alone.
>> No, what No, not No, I'm not asking you how you're going.
>> I'm God bless you.
>> Say what does your shirt say?
