Details on an unusual mid-May freeze

[00:00:00]Hey, it's meteorologist Corey Reppenhagen taking a closer look at those cold temperatures that are coming in with this storm. The coldest part of this event will be very early on Tuesday morning, just before the sun comes up.

[00:00:12]And we do have a freeze watch, which has been issued by the National Weather Service, and for all of Northeast Colorado, it is detailed for temperatures as low as 29°, and in the northwest part of the state, temperatures as low as 21°.

[00:00:30]Now, not all the places in that freeze watch will be freezing, and some and some places will be below that 29° threshold. Take a look at our forecast here, and you can see place like Lyman, 27°.

[00:00:44]31 we have for Denver. Now, when we forecast temperatures for Denver, we gear them towards the official temperature, which is recorded out at Denver International Airport, and that is by far the coldest place in the Denver metro area. So, if you take a closer look at the metro, you can see that most likely a lot of places will actually avoid that freeze technically by a few degrees. So, what that tells me is that the impacts will be to the vegetation, the sensitive annual flowers, and the sensitive veggies like tomatoes. So, what I would do is cover them up or bring them inside tonight, on Sunday night, and leave them covered or inside until Wednesday afternoon. That's when we'll be clear of this unusual cold snap for this late in May.
