Rounds of showers and storms move across New Orleans area

[00:00:02]Good Saturday morning. This is meteorologist Alexa Trishler here to bring you the latest update on the rainy Mother's Day weekend that we are stuck with. It's about 11:03 in the morning and we are dealing with some pockets of heavy rain across the area. No severe storms at this point. Just some nuisance showers across the metro area and beyond. Heavy rain in the uptown section of New Orleans and on the West Bank too into Morero to Terry Town to Alers and into the French Quarter. Some heavy soaking showers for the city of New Orleans. Some heavy rain in Kennor, too.

[00:00:33]Steady and moderate rain in River Ridge and in Meery and along I 10 and Jefferson Parish. Off into the west for our river parishes. Pockets of heavy rain continuing over St. Charles Parish into Lelass into Grammar and even back west towards Donaldsonville. Then on the southshore, farther down the bayou and along the coast, more pockets of heavy rain in Cookree, lower plaemens, also at Homa and Tibido seeing some good soaking showers. There are some breaks in the rain, but some of the rain is coming down pretty heavy. Just heard a rumble of thunder over our studios here in the French Quarter. So we have a few thunderstorms embedded in there, too.

[00:01:08]Heavy rain in Pro River County, Hancock County and South Mississippi, St. Tam Parish seeing a bunch of heavy rain.

[00:01:14]Even southern Tangapoa Parish, Mandeville about to get another good soaking shower. And then Lake Pona train covered with rain. So the causeway messy drive for early this morning and continuing throughout the late morning.

[00:01:26]Some messy driving conditions across the area. Lighter rain in Slido. Now Washington Parish is mostly dry. So is the majority of Tangaho Parish.

[00:01:35]Yesterday we had severe storms too. We had several reports of severe um some tree or severe reports the last day.

[00:01:42]Some reports of down trees and also we had some power outages yesterday.

[00:01:47]reports of hail, some hail in the river parishes yesterday, wind damage in Belchase, wind damage in Pro River County, several down trees from this morning, storms on the northshore in Tangapoa Parish. So, we've had some at least some minor damage over the last day and a half with these storms coming in Friday and again this morning. So, little bit of damage, mostly hail and uh down trees, wind damage to one home in South Mississippi. There could be some more reports coming in, too. And off to the west in Baton Rouge, Baton Rouge has seen so much rain over the last day, over 10 inches. When I was checking earlier, in some parts of Baton Rouge, they have just seen the worst of the rain. Our immediate area, we've picked up about four to five inches on parts of the Northshore, two to four inches on the Southshore. That's just general estimates, looking at radar estimates.

[00:02:36]Nothing, no official measurements just yet. Uh, I haven't put those numbers together yet, but we've certainly seen an abundance of rain. Helpful to the drought, but not great for our weekend plans. Taking a live look outside from the West Bank. The rain is coming down right now. So, make sure you're driving carefully. You're rearranging your plans accordingly since it is a soggy weekend.

[00:02:57]67° winds from the east a little breezy around 15 miles hour. It'll be breezy within our thunderstorms that come in.

[00:03:03]Due points are in the 60s. So, it does feel a little bit humid. So, it is a pretty unsettled pattern thanks to this stalled stationary front that's over the Gulf Coast. Plus, we've got ample moisture and an upper disturbance. So, we've had the storms so far this morning and they're starting to redevelop off to the west along this boundary. And then we'll probably have another batch of storms making their way in from the Gulf into Louisiana. We'll see how far they extend into our immediate area once that batch of storms moves into Louisiana, maybe more so into the western part of the state later today, but we'll watch and see. Just very, really active unsettledness to the atmosphere that storms can fire up very easily this weekend and that continues into Monday.

[00:03:45]Here's a look at water vapor showing you that upper disturbance off to our west making its way eastward along the Gulf Coast this weekend. So that's why we have more fuel for storms throughout the course of today, tomorrow, and then finally later in the week or later in the weekend, more like Monday, early in the work week of coming up, I should say, we'll have an upper trough and a cold front coming in. And once the cold front comes in Monday, h we'll get the dry air moving in by Monday night. But Monday, we still have some storms to deal with out ahead of that cold front that moves in. So let's time out these storms for the rest of today. So what what's to expect for the rest of your Saturday into Sunday and Monday? More scattered heavy showers coming throughout the rest of the morning into the early afternoon with a few thunderstorms working in there too.

[00:04:28]Storms could produce some lightning, some brief gusty winds, too. Showers and storms continuing through the early afternoon. By this evening, we start to quiet down a bit, but there could be still some lingering showers and a few storms even early in the evening. But by like 6:30, 700 p.m. tonight, we should be mostly dry. Later in the night, mostly dry. And overnight, too, pretty quiet. Then tomorrow for Mother's Day, looks like the morning the model wants to keep us quiet still, but I think tomorrow afternoon we'll probably see a few isolated showers and storms popping up once again later tomorrow, but the model has backed down a bit for tomorrow. We'll wait and see. I wouldn't get too excited. I think we'll still have a little bit of rain around on your Mother's Day Sunday. So, keep the plans flexible for tomorrow. Hopefully, we can squeeze out enough dry time though tomorrow for your plans. And then Monday, more pockets of rain, batches of heavy rain and storms coming in looking like Monday morning into the afternoon, even into the early part of the evening on Monday ahead of the next cold front that we get. It's not going to be that strong, but some dry air will certainly filter in and we'll get some nice extended break with no rain starting Tuesday. We'll stay dry for the rest of the work week starting on Tuesday.

[00:05:39]Weather impact alert for today and tomorrow. or watching for localized street flooding, one or two severe storms with damaging wind gusts being possible. Small hail too and lightning.

[00:05:57]Bring your rain gear this weekend. Keep your rain boots handy, umbrellas, rain jackets, things like that. Have it by your side today, tomorrow, and Monday.

[00:06:05]Also today and tomorrow and Monday, the next three days, every single day we have the same thing going on, and that's we have a marginal risk of severe weather. It's a level one out of five.

[00:06:15]The lowest risk it can be, but it's certainly there. We'll have to watch for isolated severe storms. It's not going to be a problem everywhere, but we could get those storms producing wind gusts up to maybe 50 to 60 miles hour. Small hail could fall out of these storms, lightning, and downpours. But also there is a very low risk for an isolated brief weak tornado. That's the lowest level concern I have is for tornadoes, but it's still there. But the risk for that is quite low, but we'll keep an eye on things just to be safe this weekend.

[00:06:45]Today we have our highest risk of flooding. It's a slight risk, level two out of four for most of the area. So, we're watching for a little bit of flooding today. Drive carefully. Always avoid flooded roadways. You may have to go a bit slower on your normal drives today just because there's going to be standing water, puddles, ponding. You know how it gets when it rains like this around here. So, it might be a little bit slow to go when you're driving around today. Tomorrow and Monday, we're not being highlighted for a risk of excessive rainfall, but we'll see if that changes. There could be a little bit of heavy rain, but more localized on Sunday and Monday. Here's your Mother's Day forecast. Mostly cloudy, temperatures in the 80s. Not really expecting much sunshine tomorrow. Maybe a few little peaks possibly early tomorrow and then we'll see a few little scattered storms I think tomorrow in the afternoon and early evening. Hopefully we get some good breaks and dry time in between for tomorrow. But still planning for at least a little bit of rain for the remainder of your weekend. Monday, still scattered storms in the mix to kick off the work week. Keep that in mind. Your work week starting off on the wet side. But don't worry, Tuesday and through Friday, it's going to be beautiful outside. Plenty of sun, seasonably warm. Temperatures will be in the 80s. And with the front, it's actually going to feel less humid on Tuesday and Wednesday will be nice. And our nights and mornings a little be a little bit cool and refreshing. 50s and 60s for our morning low temperatures.
