In 1878, European diplomats gathered in Berlin to redraw the map of the Balkans after the Russo-Turkish War. They drew borders with no knowledge of who lived where, what languages people spoke, or what those borders would mean to the people inside them. Bosnia was handed to the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The Bosnian Serbs who lived there had no vote, no representation, and no say. They wanted to be part of Serbia. The diplomats in Berlin did not care. A line was drawn.

[00:00:33]An empire was given a territory it did not govern, did not understand, and could not control. 36 years later, a 19-year-old Bosnian Serb named Gavrilo Princip stood on a street corner in Sarajevo. He was not acting randomly. He was the direct product of a generation raised under foreign occupation that began with a line drawn in Berlin by men who never came to Bosnia. On June 28, 1914, he shot Archduke Franz Ferdinand. Within 6 weeks, every major European power was at war. 20 million people died. 21 million were wounded. Four empires collapsed. The entire 20th century traces back through an unbroken chain of cause and effect to a line drawn by a diplomat who had never been to Bosnia.
