Is MAT Replacing One Addiction With Another? An Addiction Doctor ExplainsAdded:
MAT is medication for addiction treatment.
And actually, I don't use that term anymore because many of us that work in the addiction field realize that medication for addiction treatment just is addiction treatment. And so, whether it's a medication or whether it's a type of therapy, all of that is just part and parcel of what someone should expect um to be offered in addiction care. So, the actual definition of MAT is evidence-based treatment that uses medications like buprenorphine that are aimed to help people with cravings, with withdrawal, um prevent overdose, and really just help someone stabilize their lives.
So, none of that to me is replacing one addiction with another. It's really just treating a medical condition with a medication, um the same way we would treat diabetes with insulin.
