Mule shopping at a horse auction in Colorado! ~ She was AMAZING! 😍Added:
It's been quite a while since I took you guys along with me for a horse auction.
This auction seems to have a pretty good reputation, but I've never been to it before, so I'm excited to check it out.
This auction should have a pretty good selection. There's a bunch of mules, using horses, there are halfdrafts.
I'm really not looking for anything for myself, but I am going to scope out a few of the horses I saw in the catalog for a few friends.
And then roll off and then make a great As soon as I got to the sale, I noticed there was this cute little mule previewing in the arena. I've had a few mules in the past that I've rehabbed, and it would be nice to have a little bit of extra predator protection around the ranch. I'm not sure what the average sale price is at this particular auction, but I'm anticipating that it's going to be a little bit higher than some of the other sales.
This is a truck building.
This horse was super cool. He was almost 17 hands and moved around pretty good.
Over the last couple of years, these big old horses have been gaining popularity, but they're really just not my style.
From what little I've already seen, this guy should sell for quite a bit of money.
Before I got too distracted watching horses, I wanted to find the sale office so I could get registered. I wanted a bidder number and also a sale catalog.
It looks like the bad weather did follow me here today. They are doing a sale preview of all of the horses and then this afternoon they will be auctioning all of them off inside. I was just settling into viewing some of the horses when I noticed a black and white blur out the corner of my eye. While I always have my eyes peeled for a cute little companion for Nigel, I bet this little pony is going to sell for a pretty penny.
>> They got him solid and pretty here in the catalog.
A pretty big number of these horses are advertised as working ranch horses. So they might look a little bit different to what you guys are seeing as far as show horses are concerned. Lots of cattle around here. So it's always important that if you're buying a horse, they can do the job that you need them to do. I'm a little bit spoiled after attending some really high dollar horse sales up in Montana. The horses I'm looking at today are probably not going to be as nice. I'm sure a bunch of them are going to sell for five figures, but I don't think we're gonna see a six figure horse today. I always like to pick out who I think is going to be the high selling horse for the sale.
>> This one is going to be a little bit tricky because there is such a variety of horses. I think ultimately it's going to boil down to who shows up to bid on horses. There is a special session in this sale called Women of the West. I believe all of these horses were trained by their owners and there is a set of X-rays for all of these on file. There were more than a few handy ladies out there showing off their horses. The cattle did seem a little bit sour today, but there was a storm brewing over the arena pretty much the whole entire morning. I go shop a lot of horse auctions and typically I can keep my cool. There was one horse in the catalog that I knew I was really going to like though.
>> And ready to work, Lindsay has been hauled to jackpots and rodeo and eyebrows gas 37 in the c.
>> You guys know how much I like my plain brown ponies and this little mayor was the cutest. She reminded me so much of Frisco Bill. I got a little bit teareyed when I was watching her. Out of all of the horses I've seen so far, I bet this one is going to be the best deal. She's bred really cool with highbrow cat on the top and Zippo pine bars on the bottom. A really neat combination of cow and pleasure bred horses.
or women of the wet. Let's move along to spot number 38 for sale.
>> These kind of sales are a lot easier for me to just sit and watch the horses and enjoy. It's only catalog horses today.
No loose horses. The preview was moving along pretty quickly with the help of a few supervisors.
I briefly flipped through the catalog and just by breeding and accomplishments alone, the next horse is the one that I am thinking is going to be the highselling horse. He was really broke, very pretty, and it seemed like he loved to get to work.
her leg like a rattlesnake when she's heading down the spin.
There was one eichcoin that I came specifically to see and she will be coming up next. She is certainly going to be out of my budget and I bet she's going to get very close to being the high seller today.
>> Designed by West Line is a striking versatile mule started on her saddle by her owner. She has been used extensively in the mountains.
this super cute Molly mule I've had my eyeballs on for a while. I've got one client that I'm looking at this mule for, but I have a feeling she is going to go for a lot more money than she's wanting to spend. She's coming from a very reputable mule breeder, even though I don't think they bred this particular mule. And after seeing her work, I think she's probably going to be very close to selling for as much as or more than that palamino.
Antonio, Colorado.
>> Super gentle. G really wants to be in your pocket.
>> There were a handful of really big, beautiful draft crosses. In Montana, these horses were really desirable to get out into the mountains with. One of the big problems with these horses is they tend to be extremely wide. They're hard to fit a saddle on and they're pretty uncomfortable if you're trying to sit on them for hours and hours. I would still much rather have a tiny little brown horse to cruise around on. This little geling was a son of cats marada and seemed to be pretty handy on the heel side. Since I'm still not super familiar with what kinds of horses sell for big money around here, I'm not going to take too many guesses. I think that this year in particular, the prices are going to be a little bit skewed because of the hay situation. While I was at the sale, I took the opportunity to check out a few horse trailers that they had.
This one's really neat. It's like a aluminum version of what I have with a slam gate, so you can tie two horses in the front and two horses in the back. It also had a walkth through tack room that went into a living quarters with a slide out. pretty fancy digs, but it would be really nice if you were road tripping with your horses.
Before we found our property, I really tried hard to convince my husband that we could just live in a nice living quarters trailer. It was one of my schemes that he really turned his nose up at. I really liked the tack room in this trailer. It was a lot like the other one except the back had slants for horses. This is basically a much much nicer version of the trailer I have.
It's a very similar but smaller version of the kind of trailer that all of the horses rode down to Colorado in with the hauler.
This one doesn't have the fancy living quarters in the front. It just has a little section over the nose to store things. You could definitely put a mattress up here and live in it short term if you wanted to. I always like to give you guys an idea of how much stuff actually costs when dealing with horses.
And this trailer is a little bit expensive. It's 56,000.
This plain old steel stock trailer is more similar to mine. It has a really cool rubber floor in it. A very basic tack room for storage. A few different areas that you can put your horses and cattle in. Definitely a more sensible buy if you just needed the bare necessities.
For the official sale preview today, they were going in catalog order, but a lot of the horses were hanging out in the warm-up arena. For it being a drought year, there were a lot of buyers around. I was a little bit surprised.
This fairgrounds is pretty nice. There's multiple arenas and barns, so there were quite a few horses that I saw that were not for sale. I wasn't going to bid on anything, but after I saw the next animal, that completely changed.
I have a lot of friends with mules that I've talked about our predator problem with. While I would like to be able to have donkeys, they typically need to be bought in pairs. A mule would also be a more practical purchase. While it's nice to have those big old satellite dishes out listening for possible predators, it would also be really good if I had an animal that I could take out and hit the trail with. And this cute little paint Molly seemed to be the perfect kind of mule to fit right into my whole setup.
I did not want this opportunity to pass me by, so I made sure to flag down the seller and have a nice long chat with him.
>> Six minutes. Okay.
>> Enough to know what she's like.
>> But she does even better with somebody.
>> Seems like a nice girl.
>> I didn't even bring my horse trailer today because I had not anticipated on finding such a perfect match for what I have currently going on at the ranch.
This little girl is mid- teens and she just seems like a nice quiet mule. Even if she is perhaps not the most broke one here, I need a mule that's going to be easy to handle and not do any kind of shenanigans while I'm not around.
While she wasn't exactly impressive in the arena, her attitude more than made up for it. I was really not expecting it, but I'm going to have to make a quick phone call to talk to my husband.
We've been married for quite a while now, and I think my husband finally has come to the realization that even if I don't take a trailer to these sales, I still could perhaps end up buying something. I'm really not that far away from where we live. And all of the animals don't have to be picked up until tomorrow.
Oh, surprise. Sorry.
My favorite little brown mayor is definitely going to be too expensive for an impulse buy. Hey, girl. Girl.
Oh, sweet girl.
I wanted to sneak one more peek at the mule before I really got my heart set on her. Oh, you're a different mule.
You're a totally different mule.
There were a handful of mules in the catalog and they all seemed a little bit different. I know what mules sell for up in Montana, but here I am not really sure. Hey.
Oh, you are pretty. You are handsome.
Yeah, >> all of the draft crosses that I saw today were absolutely gorgeous, but they were all almost 17 hands, which is way too tall for me. There was a big group of horses that were actually brood mayors in full. I came specifically to look at these for one of my friends who is a breeder. These mayors are being sold only because of the drought and they are really nice. I hope my friends end up bidding on them online, but we'll just have to see what the prices are. I haven't seen one of these in a long time. This is a stock rack. It's actually a little compartment for your horse to ride in the back of your truck with you. Pretty handy when you're out in very mountainous terrain where a horse trailer cannot go. They timed the preview really well. There wasn't too much standing and waiting around before the sale actually started.
>> She's got the heart over the size of Kansas and has been handled.
Lay down here. Don't miss out on a good one. Now, this booger rides around.
>> This really cute little pony was a steal at $1,900.
Usually, the first couple of horses through the ring set the tone for the day. I was a little bit worried after seeing the pony sale, but then the bidding really picked up.
>> Here he is. He's a rocker now. Bid 10 5 11 11 now five 11 five. You're out once.
>> She is due. Um this is lot number three.
Ja Frosty Face. She's an experienced brood mayor and she >> This mayor was 19 years old and she was so gorgeous. I really liked all of these brood mares in their stall, but after seeing them in the ring, I like them even more. The sail ring was packed. It was standing room only. The speakers were really loud and there was some crazy weather happening outside that did spook a few of the horses. The first halfdraft was a steal at $7,000.
The first mule of the sale ended up passing out. They did not get enough money for him.
225 25 34 help you out all I can 324 32 to 4 done got to be 32 on board 32 now 32 now >> if there aren't very many mule buyers here then I could luck out and get a screaming deal on that little painted Molly she is all the way at the end of the sale so I'm going to have to watch pretty much every other horse sell first >> seller 7750 thank you everybody Buddy, Susie's buying the man. No, sell that good horse. $3,500 horses wedding.
$3,500 horses wedding.
>> The few horses that were a little bit spooked by the surroundings all went for a very reasonable price. For horses that do a lot of work out in open spaces, this can be a pretty scary environment for them.
>> And being around livestock, she stays levelheaded and handles new situations with confidence. She's ready to go in any direction, whether it be ranch work or recreational riding. I completely missed this girl in the preview, but she was a gorgeous halfdraft.
>> 87 now. Nine. You're out way up top. I got the man in the green right here. 87.
Now 89. Now 89. Now >> here in bed, she's short and strong and would also make a great mule. Moose is an outstanding young buckskin gelling.
He is ready to take home and be your friend. After watching a few of the regular cataloged horses sale, it was now time for the special women of the West session. We've still got quite a few more to go before that fancy little spotted mule comes along. The prices for this special session were definitely a bit higher than the regular cataloged horses.
So 21,000 727 21,000 >> that from ranching in Texas, Nebraska and Colorado to being shown in Versa, Colorado, Wyoming, Nebraska, and Texas.
>> That's epic times and all this stuff.
Hey, now that thing is he he knows more about a cow than a bull does. That thing's good.
>> When the really fancy Palamino came through, he ended up being the high seller up until this point. I am thinking that spotted mule is going to sell for right around the same price.
>> 28 $29,000 down 29,000 28 29 28 29 28 29 Do it.
>> Thank you. You bought yourself a really really nice does an outstanding job with these mules.
This is definitely a super flashy mule, but if she was just plain brown, I think her price would be pretty high compared to the other mules I saw today. 17 18 19 21.
>> It's always really nice to see a high quality animal sell at one of these sales to really excited buyers. And I can't imagine that this little mule's new owners aren't over the moon to have her.
>> 31 sell 30,000 bucks right there on the internet. Hey, $30,000.
That's a good one.
60 days. I was a little bit worried that the price of these brood mayors was going to be a little bit too low for the sale, but they all sold for a pretty good amount given their age. I think the prices for these draft crosses was a little bit lower than the national average, but that may just be because the area that they're selling in, and they were some big old wide horses. This super cute little cats Marada definitely was not bringing the amount of money that he should have. His owner ended up passing him out and bringing him home.
>> Sold the horse 32 and 12 to our number >> who rides well in and out of the arena and a smooth flowing load. You can >> 145 145 145 >> safe and they'll ride in and out of the arena.
>> 18,000 I'm getting 17 >> now. 18,000 in 18,000. I only had a few more horses to prepare to decide how much money I thought was reasonable to bid on the little Molly mule. My husband was actually quite a bit more excited about it than I thought he was going to be. While this is not exactly an impulse buy, I wasn't quite prepared to bring a new mule home this weekend.
>> I was feeling pretty hopeful after the first couple of bids and then it started to heat up.
Now 2,00 now 2 and 1/2. Hit 2 and 1/2.
And now five. Now five little 25 and 1/2. Now 3 down. Now 3 down. Now 35. 35.
35.
What about >> the more this little Molly mule trotted around the sale, the more I started to really like her. I have a lot of mule friends across this part of the West.
And I could definitely find one just like her for probably half the price she sold for today.
number.
>> All righty. Next, we have >> When the bidding was over, she sold for $4,200, which was about double what I wanted to pay on a impulse buy mule.
Today, I watched the remaining horses sell. And then I had to hit the road so I could get back in time to feed all of my horses dinner.
Hey, can you also hook up to the pony?
And hey, you buy.
>> We got a screaming good deal on the pony for $6,000.
I know this sale company does a few sales around Colorado, and I'll definitely come back and check this one out. I'm going to be on baby watch pretty soon, so it was nice to get out and experience an auction before all of that starts happening. Thank you guys so much for watching and stay tuned for the next video.
Holy mackerel.
Get down from there.
See we make an arch.
They're crazy.
