Weather forecasting involves analyzing atmospheric conditions to predict temperature, precipitation, and weather patterns for specific time periods. Meteorologists use historical data, current conditions, and computer models to create forecasts that help communities plan activities and prepare for weather events. For example, a forecast might predict sunny conditions with temperatures in the 50s for a particular day, followed by rain showers the next day, helping residents make informed decisions about outdoor activities and clothing choices.

A nice flick.
>> Doesn't end that way.
>> That brings home another run. And then Caleb Durban. Whoa. Between the legs singling in to make it a tie game.
>> That's when the good vibes stop. Socks would fall 8-4.
It'll go against Tampa again at Fenway tonight. First pitch at 710.
>> Also, uh the Socks have placed Roman Anthony on the 10day injured list.
Remember, he suffered a wrist sprain in Monday's game at Detroit. Anthony said he doesn't need surgery, and the move is retroactive to May 5th, so he could be back in a week.
>> All right, 657. Billy and Lisa over at Kiss 108 getting [music] ready to help you hit the road.
>> Yeah, let's check in with them. See what they're talking about this morning. Hey guys, happy Friday.
>> Happy Friday. And happy Mother's Day, Briana.
>> Happy Mother's Day.
>> Thank you guys. Happy Mother's Day to you too, Lisa.
>> Yeah, >> thanks. So Olivia Rodrigo was hilarious on Saturday Night Live last weekend.
She's out on tour. Tickets for her tour, her three shows here in Boston, actually the entire tour went on sale yesterday and it was nuts. Lisa, >> well they were adding dates. So we were talking about concerts that are selling well like Olivia Rodrigo, Ariana Grande, Harry Styles, 30 Nights at Madison Square Garden, but then you've got other tours like Megan Trainer, Post Malone, Zayn who have either canled shows or cancelled the entire tour. So, like what's going on?
>> Some people are selling too many tickets. Other people can't sell tickets.
>> This is interesting.
>> What do you guys think is behind this?
Is it Is it pricing? Is it too many dates to start with being offered? What is it?
>> I think it's probably a little bit of both. I think that these ticket prices keep creeping up and up and up and then you're right, there are like a lot of shows happening all at the same time.
>> It just seems like they're jamming a lot of shows in a shorter period of time and people just can't even keep up. I said, "Who's coming now? I can't buy another ticket."
>> Yeah, that's a good point. It's the old supply and demand. And uh that was a very generous term saying the prices are creeping up, Lisa. [laughter] >> Yes. It's like, do I fill my gas tank or do I go to a concert? I don't know.
>> That's the choices people are making.
>> These are Yeah, these are questions that everyone has to ask themselves.
>> And by the way, hot tip, Shane Gillis is in town for three shows this weekend.
Then he flies off. He's going to be hosting the Kevin Hart Roast Sunday night on Netflix.
>> That's going to be fun. All right. Hey guys, thank you so much. Happy weekend and again, happy Mother's Day. We got to get to this breaking news one last time here. Uh look at this. We made a lot of progress. It looks like they've moved that tractor trailer out of the way.
This was in the Rotary, Sullivan Square Rotary over in Charles Town. Yep. Look at that. Uh so that's good. We're back in business here. Uh Jason, we want to get a check of the forecast for you here for this allimportant weekend. Oh yeah, the warmest day of the next seven, Briana and Chris will be on Sunday here for Mother's Day. A pretty decent day overall here. Coolest day is likely going to be on Monday with heavy rain happening yet again. You can see we're going to be dealing with off and on rain chances over the next several days here.
For the most part, we're going to keep those temperatures seasonal.
>> All right, sounds good, Jason. Hey, thanks for joining us here on WBZ. We'll keep it going on our stream CBS News Boston.
>> Yeah, that's right. But as we head to break here, enjoy this look at Situate Light and CBS Morning starts right now.
>> [music] [music] >> Now streaming on CBS News Boston, this is WBZ News Mornings.
>> Right now on CBS News Boston, a platform [music] used by thousands of schools hit by a cyber attack. The issue that is promp prompting [music] some colleges to postpone final exams. We are live with a closer look at the impact.
>> Honoring a fallen state trooper killed in a wrongway [music] crash. We'll show you the latest tributes as family and friends remember his life.
>> And a pilot [music] is okay when a small plane lands upside down on the Cape.
What she is saying about the crash.
>> Plus, high prices and big profits for oil [music] companies. The latest on gas prices in the country and new violence in the Middle East.
>> Well, good morning [music] and thank you so much for joining us. It is Friday, May 8th, as we take a look over the city. Gorgeous sunrise there. I'm Brianna Pittz >> and I'm Chris Tanaka. We want to get straight to Jason Michael for the next weather forecast. Good day ahead of us.
A little cooler, Jason, but of course, everyone's got eyes on Mother's Day.
>> Oh yeah, my friend here. Good morning to you and good Friday morning everybody. A stable start and also a sunny start to our Friday with some overhanging clouds developing throughout the course of the afternoon here. We're going to keep those temperatures fairly mild from the Carolinas all the way up north there on the I95 quarter right into New England.
Look at the stunning start. Wow, the Zikum Bridge looks gorgeous on this Friday morning. 30s well out west there.
40s m middle of the state there. 44 degrees in Bedford. 49 in Boston and Hyenas and also Ptown. And the low 50s on the islands again this morning. We have more clouds developing throughout the early afternoon here, friends. But again, lowle spot shower chances will keep minimal sort of impacts for our Friday afternoon. The Red Sox game later on this evening here is going to be a okay for the first pitch around 710. As we close out our Friday and march towards our Saturday, this is what we're expecting here. Some rainfall forecast models actually bringing rain in earlier for our Saturday and likely continuing throughout the late morning into the early afternoon and unfortunately for the evening hours as well. So, it kind of appears as though we're going to have a bit of a wash out for our Saturday.
Here's the hour by hour. 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. Notice a lot of green on the map. This is going to be pretty steady rain there, especially across northern Mass through northeastern Mass there up towards the Northshore. We're going to keep the rain around as the sun goes down for tomorrow evening. We got to talk about Sunday because there's a lot of big plans happening on Sunday for Mother's Day. And we'll get right to it coming up in the full weather forecast.
Let's head on over to Brianna now with an update on what's been happening here overnight. Breezy. All right, Jason, we're going to get a check of traffic for you here right now. And we have some good news. There was a overnight uh rollover crash here with a tractor trailer in the Sullivan Square Rotary in Charles Town. It was right in front of the traps building. Well, they have uprighted that tractor trailer and pulled it off to the side here so traffic can once again uh move. It was being diverted onto Rutherford A. There was no access here uh from a couple of the ramps. But that crash happened just after 4:00 a.m. and within about just about 3 hours here as of a few minutes ago, it is back open. Uh so that is some good news roadwise. Breaking overnight, an ambulance was damaged in a crash with a Jeep in Matipan. This happened at Morton and Harvard streets. Boston EMS tells us that the ambulance was transporting a patient at the time. They were taken to the hospital in another ambulance. Both EMTs were taken to the hospital to be checked out as well. Uh neighbors do tell us that it is a dangerous intersection.
>> We're also following a developing story impacting thousands of schools across the country, including here in Massachusetts.
>> Hackers hit a platform that's used by universities and other school systems and it's forced some to postpone their final exams. WBZ's Anna Miler is live in LOL with the impact there. Briana.
>> Well, Briana and Chris, this cyber security incident is a huge disruption to so many schools and it couldn't come at a worse time. Here at UMass Lowel, final exams for onampus classes have been cancelled today and pushed to Monday. The program that has been impacted by this is called Canvas. It's an online learning platform that schools use for assignments, notes, and tests.
The tech company that operates Canvas Instructure was hit by a cyber security attack. And the hacking group named Shiny Hunters claimed responsibility for this breach and warned that student and faculty information including student and teacher names, email addresses, student ID numbers, and even private messages will be linked unless instructure pays up. This is impacting schools all over the country. Students in California say it's adding a lot of stress to the end of their school year.
It's finals season. Like I'm going to be graduating in like two or three weeks and you know I'm already anxious enough and now I can't, you know, now I'm unable to do my assignments and I I mean yeah I no one really knows what's going on.
>> And here are the local schools we know have been impacted. Nor Eastern University, UMass Dartmouth, UMass Lowel, Emerson College, Harvard University and Welssley public schools.
The hackers are threatening to leak that personal data if they don't get paid by May 12th in Lowel. Anna Miler, WBZ News.
>> All right, Anna, thanks for the update.
American flags draped over overpasses, strangers lining the street with hands on their hearts. First responders standing at attention. All of it a somber tribute to a fallen state trooper. Last night, the body of trooper Kevin Trainer was escorted from to a funeral home in Peody a day after he gave his life trying to stop a wrongway driver in Lynfield. And funeral services we now know will be held for trooper trainer next week.
>> Last night, an entire community gathered to show their respect and gratif gratitude for his sacrifice. WBZ's Brandon Truit was there. It's >> one of the most sacred traditions in law enforcement and one no family wants to take part in. Freezing >> the dignified transfer of trooper Kevin Trainer carrying his body from the medical examiner's office in Boston to a funeral home in Peody. Overpasses were filled with fellow first responders.
Some waved American flags. Others held signs of support for the family as they passed underneath. Hundreds of people lined up in front of the funeral home waiting for their chance to pay their respects.
>> So sad. Such a long young life taken too soon and such a terrible tragedy for his family.
>> After a 30 minute journey, the procession arrived in pee. Trooper trainers loved ones embracing each other outside of the funeral home.
>> It was beautiful. A beautiful Yeah, I've never seen anything like it.
>> Yeah, it was pretty powerful. It was a nice tribute.
>> The 30-year-old trooper was killed Wednesday morning while responding to a call for a wrongway driver on Route 1 in Lynfield. New video from a passing truck shows that Jeep driving the wrong way moments before it collided with Trooper Trainer's vehicle. The driver of the other car also died. Earlier Thursday, Trooper Trainer's fiance laid flowers on a cruiser at the Danver's barracks. The memorial there growing by the hour.
Trooper Trainer is being remembered for his sense of loyalty, integrity, and compassion. His loss sending a wave of grief throughout this community. It's everybody's worst nightmare, right? Sad, devastating.
>> Trooper trainer is survived by his mother, fiance, and siblings. He comes from a family of first responders. His obituary writes that being a trooper was his calling in Peody. Brandon Truit, WBZ News.
>> And trooper trainer will be honored at a funeral mass on Wednesday at St. James Church in Salem. At service begins at 11:00 a.m. and you can find more information at wbz.com. A pilot tells us she's doing okay after a crash landing on the Cape. Her small plane landed upside down at the Cape Cod Gateway Airport in Hyannis yesterday afternoon.
Plane had left from Falmouth. Pilot was the only person on board. We actually talked to her on the phone last night.
Said she wasn't physically injured.
>> Patient had been self-extricated prior to our arrival standing next to the aircraft. Yeah, definitely ended best case scenario. Um, everybody walked away and uh no injuries. So, couldn't get much better than that.
>> And the airport was temporarily shut down while crews cleaned up a small fuel spill from the crash. The NTSB is investigating what actually caused the plane to go down.
Now, to the war with Iran. President Trump says the ceasefire is still intact despite the US and Iran exchanging fire.
>> Yeah. Yesterday, the US fired what it's calling defensive strikes on Iranian boats and missile launchers. It followed an Iranian attack on three American Navy vessels. Those votes eventually passed through the straight of Hormuse to join the blockade. President Trump praised the move.
>> They trifled with us today. We blew them away. Every missile was knocked down.
Every drone was knocked down. And the people that shot it are no longer with us.
>> Well, the US is waiting on Iran to respond to its latest peace proposal. An Iranian spokesman says the plan is under review. Meanwhile, national gas prices jumped another 2 cents yesterday, up to 455 a gallon. That's up more than 25 cents from last week. Here in Massachusetts, a gallon is up to 446 on average. And it could get worse.
>> Probably be at $4.90 by next week. We could be at $5 by Memorial Day. And unless the street reopens, we are going to go above $5. And that's going to be very politically and economically painful.
>> Yeah. The higher prices also mean higher profits for gas companies. Yesterday, Shell announced it brought in 6.9 billion in the first quarter, highest revenue in 2 years.
>> Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Campbell is facing a 30-day deadline to decide whether she'll represent the state auditor in her attempt to sue lawmakers. The yearslong dispute centers around Diana Daglio's attempt to audit the legislature. In 2024, voters approved a ballot question giving her that authority. However, lawmakers have argued an audit could violate constitutional rules regarding separation of powers. The Supreme Judicial Court says Campbell has to file a report about her decision by June 6th.
>> All right, just ahead this morning on CBS [music] News Boston, sounding off on potholes. The opportunity you may have to share [music] your thoughts today.
Hey, hey, hey.
>> [music] [music] >> Hey, [music] hey, hey.
>> [music] [singing] >> Welcome back. [music] Another lovely morning in the city. Look at those blue skies. It's going to be a little cooler today, says Jason. [music] Of course, we got our eyes on Mother's Day weekend and it's going to be a tale of two days, right?
>> Yes, it's going to be a tale of two days here. Wet on Saturday. Unfortunately, [music] it's actually going to be pretty decent uh for us here by the time we get to Sunday here, which is a great sort of kind of sort of a landscape for celebrating mom, celebrating grandma, celebrating the aunts, celebrating the sisters, celebrating all moms.
Everybody, our weather headlines here for our Friday begins with partly sunny skies there. We'll have a few pop-ups likely for us here with very low-level impacts in terms of our Friday, our Saturday, we have more showers beginning to envelop and move across the Mass Pike region here. Interior showers possible for us on Sunday, but even as we look towards our Sunday night into early Monday, would you believe more rain is going to be ramping up here again. Let's get right into our futurecast here, friends. Talking about the hourby hour forecast. Again, low-level impacts for our afternoon and evening hours across New England. At least for the vast majority of the Commonwealth, we're talking about a few passing clouds.
Again, emphasis on passing for our afternoon and also our evening. Now, our Saturday opens up with a bit of a modest start here and becomes rapidly more unsettled as we move towards the noon hour on Saturday. That is likely going to cause a bit of a wet weather pattern to linger, just linger all throughout the afternoon. It's going to be a very raw, so going to be a very damp and also a very dank type of day for us on Saturday. Meanwhile, enjoy the sunshine at least while we have it here. Again, afternoon clouds are going to be dancing across the skies there. A bit drier for us on Sunday for Mom's Day around a 20 to 30% chance for a few pop-ups here and there. But as we look towards our Monday, unfortunately, we're going to be ramping back up here again, requiring the wet g the wet gear. Saturday, noticeably cooler as Chris mentioned, lower 60s on deck for us on Saturday and the upper 60s and low 70s for us on Sunday. So, let's double down on Sunday as you're going to be ramping up those plans and getting them solidified there.
50s to start, perhaps even a couple early spot shower chances coming in off the tail end of us on Saturday. Mild sun and also a few clouds developing there for midday on Sunday around the upper 60s, low 70s. More clouds developing and moving back in with overnight rain ramping up on Sunday night. Here's a bigger scanner showing what's going to be happening here. This is 5:00 a.m. on Saturday. Notice lowle spot shower chances right along central and also western Mass moving from the southwest up to the northeast and also heavier rainbands developing and moving eastbound out of Worcester towards Boston. That'll likely take us right into our evening hours for us tomorrow evening. A bit drier on Saturday, Saturday night and then more rain showers beginning to move back in from the west moving towards the east there to affect our Sunday night spilling over into our Monday as well. And I think we're actually going to have some boomers happening across northern Mass beginning on Sunday night. A gorgeous start to our Friday. Again, we want to emphasize that. A bit of a cooler start there. Lower 40s in northern Mass, 43 in Worcester, 44 degrees in Norwood, 5 degrees cooler, at least 5 degrees warmer in Boston. And again, a threat of the lower 50s out on the islands again this morning. So, we're going to remain seasonal for the most part, friends, over the next several days. Sunday being the warmest day. Likely Monday being the coolest day with that heavy rain expected on Monday. Chris, I wouldn't actually be surprised if daytime highs stay in the mid-upper 50s.
>> Ew. Yuck. All right, Jason. Thank you.
Hey, today Boston city councilors will address concerns about potholes.
Councelor Ed Flynn's going to host a hearing at 10:00 in city hall. He says he's seen a spike in complaints about road conditions and roads in need of repaving. >> The new train will also have rides uh between Boston and DC with stops in New York City, Philadelphia, and Baltimore.
Hey, Rhode Island bars are one step closer to expanding their hours for the World Cup. State senators there just approved a bill that would allow them to stay open until 4 in the morning.
Initially, the proposal would have allowed restaurants and bars to operate 24 hours a day. Lawmakers modified it based on feedback from business owners.
The bill still needs to be approved by the House before it heads to the governor's desk.

>> Yeah, the first full squad activities are set for later this month. All right, there's a mustsee if you're spending your Mother's Day weekend on the Southshore. Harbor Blooms is back for its eighth year. Briana Pittz went to Situit Harbor yesterday to watch how this really stunning popup display comes together. So, it takes hundreds of hours of planning and a team of eight florists working non-stop for about 5 hours to do the installation. Harbor Blooms has always been about more than just flowers. Every year it benefits a different organization. This year it's giving back to the Love for Laney Foundation that provides financial support for local families dealing with the loss of young child or a parent.
This year's theme is fairy house in honor of Laney who loved the color purple.
>> A woman walk by earlier and say, "Thank you so much for doing this." So, it just really makes it feel very fulfilling for us um for everyone involved in Harbor Blooms and for what it means to everybody. I think the best part is like the stories that we hear all weekend from different moms like you know what moms might be going through. Um I have four children of my own so I know like every day is not like sunshine and rainbows and there's a lot that comes along with being a mom so to have this opportunity to celebrate moms.
>> Yeah. Starting at 9:00 on Saturday and through Sunday, you'll be able to shop flowers, locally made candles, uh also Mother's Day portraits. A portion of the proceeds will go to the Love for Laney Foundation, and the flowers will be there through Monday if you want to go see them. I got a warning for college grads looking for summer jobs or internships.
The Better Business Bureau says scammers are trying to take advantage of them with fake job and internship offers. The BBB says to make sure recruiters are legitimate, be wary of anyone who just messages you on an app, never pay to submit an application or background check.
>> You should never um be providing financial uh payment to get a job. So, people are saying that they have unfortunately been asked to provide a small fee uh to run a background check and they're just, you know, it's a nominal fee. They don't think anything of it, but they're leaving themselves vulnerable not only to financial um but also identity theft potentially.
>> Well, the Better Business Bureau is also warning new grads looking for apartments, saying they should verify any listing before sharing any personal information or financial information.
Hey, starting today, the US will revoke passports of thousands of parents who owe child support. The State Department says it'll first focus on individuals who owe more than $100,000.
However, the program could be expanded to include parents who owe more than 2500. The threshold was set by a little enforced federal law that was passed back in 1996.

Well, yesterday was the first time they got to meet each other.
>> The New England Revs fans voted on one of our puppies names and they voted Turner.
>> A little bit of surprise. It's weird calling, uh, someone else Turner. Uh, that's for sure. So, uh, but no, it's super cute and it's a huge honor.
>> Yeah. The dogs from Needs will go on to a number of jobs. They're being trained to support veterans, people with disabilities, kids with autism, and those with mental health needs.

>> Another warning about a game that has teens lurking around neighborhoods. The message police have for the students and public. [music] More Americans being monitored for haunt virus. We'll tell you why experts say this is not [music] like CO and high fuel prices impacting the Greater [music] Boston Food Bank. How it could trickle down to people who really need the help.
Take a look at your screen. Would you call police if you saw this in your neighborhood? Well, someone in Stonem did. Afraid that person had a firearm walking their streets. Welcome back. I'm Chris Tanaka. Turns out that was a high schooler with just a real looking water gun playing a game. As WBZ's Christina Rex reports, police say the situation could have turned out much differently.
>> I have a gentleman outside of my house hiding with a gun. Looks like he's about to ambush somebody. I need somebody to come right away.
>> It came in as a terrifying 911 call. A witness reporting a man with a gun ready to ambush someone on Jerry Street in Stoneham Monday morning.
>> He's got a black hoodie on. He's got a gun in his right hand. He's got gray sweatpants. Police responded shortly after 7:00 a.m. and placed the man in cuffs.
>> All right, lay in your face.
>> Yeah, lay in your face.
>> Put your hands behind your back.
>> But what did they discover?
>> He's a Stonem High senior and the pistol looking gun was really a water gun.
>> It's a senior assassin water gun.
>> Senior assassin. Students tell WBZ the game started last week. About 80 kids are playing for a chance to win $800.
They each get a target. They have to get them with a water gun off school property to eliminate them. Senior Sophia Blessing got her target this morning.
>> This morning I went and I like hid in like the bush near her house like near her car so I could get her before she got to her car.
>> But now Stonem police are warning of the dangers of using real looking guns.
>> We get a call a guy with a gun hiding in the bushes. So and they said that the guy seemed crazy. The student didn't get in any real trouble. In fact, when he called his mom, she wanted to know how the game went.
>> Did you get >> uh I got called by the cops.
>> That senior student I spoke with tells me she's happy police now know the game is going on so they won't assume anything nefarious is going on with teens in town. The police chief here in Stoneham says, "Let this mishap be a lesson to other students to not use realook water guns in Stonem." Christina Rex, WBZ News.
All right, a beautiful, beautiful picture. Uh, will the rest of the day stay that way? And of course, everyone's wondering what Mother's Day weekend is going to be like. Jason Michael is back with your next weather forecast.
>> Our next weather forecast on this Friday morning, Chris, is just as you said. It is absolutely beautiful outside here.
Temperatures are milding up as we head throughout the morning hours there. 49°.
We're just under 50°. I actually want to go pretty broad here and show you not only what's happening across the northern northern hemisphere here, but also what's going to be happening as far as the northern hemisphere slipping all the way down through Florida here. So, we have a lot of cold temperatures still kind of concentrated up towards the Hudson Bay area. 40s widespread across the northern tier of the country, 30s over in Bismar there. 40s also in Mini and even 40s here in Boston as I mentioned earlier about 49 degrees there. A trough of cooler weather is slipping out of northern Canada, friends, and it's also impacting the region. We're still kind of at this point in the spring season where we're still experiencing those chilly nights, but also those milder days as well. The sun rays are pretty warm, but also we have those cooler conditions prevailing with those breezy winds. That is for the most part not changing. We have a partly sunny sky on deck for us here today. We can expect a few spot showers later on this evening and also passing clouds.
Emphasis on passing. Okay, by tomorrow though, cloud cover will be hanging overhead and likely sticking in residence. So, it will allow for a bit of a raw and also a cool start, but also a wet start to the weekend. By the tail end though, it seems like we're going to be a bit more balmy for us on Mother's Day Sunday, but also more rain is going to be arriving by Sunday night, spilling over into Monday. So, lots to unpack here over the next several days. There's going to be a cooler than average sort of ne next seven, but we'll talk about it and also break it down for you coming up in just a few moments. Chris, back over to you.
>> All right, sounds good. Jason. Well, this is awful. An ugly act of hate at Maynard High School. School officials say police are investigating after students found anti-Semitic graffiti in a classroom on Monday and again on Wednesday. The school says it takes the matter extremely seriously.
A 14-year-old boy is under arrest charged with shooting a 14-year-old girl in Boston. It team sources say it happened at a house party in Dorchester Wednesday night. They say the victim was shot in the stomach is expected to recover. Police say they caught the boy in the basement of a home on Milton Street with a loaded gun in his backpack. And a Dorchester man is now headed to prison for the 2023 shooting at the Caribbean Carnival Festival. A judge sentenced 31-year-old Gerald Vic to life in prison yesterday for his role in the shooting in which eight people were injured. He'll be eligible for parole after 15 years. Two other men were also charged in the shooting. One pleaded guilty is serving a 4-year sentence. The other will go on trial next month. Well, this morning, Havirus confirmed in two British nationals with a third case suspected. This news is from the UK Health Security Agency.
Meanwhile, multiple US states are monitoring people who disembarked the cruise ship at that's suffering from this deadly outbreak. Despite the mounting concern, multiple health officials are urging calm. CBS's Jared Hill has the latest.
>> It's very much, we hope, under control.
>> President Trump, for the first time, speaking on the HANA virus outbreak that has multiple Americans under close watch.
>> A lot of great people are studying it.
It should be fine. We hope. The cruise operator says nearly 30 passengers from at least 12 countries, including six Americans, left the ship without contact tracing during one of its first port stops. The stop on the island of St. Helena before the haunt virus was suspected in the first of three deaths linked to the ship. In the US, passengers are said to be home in Arizona, Virginia, Georgia, Texas, and California. An American doctor from Oregon is still on board. Congresswoman Janelle Binham of Oregon says he's been helping provide medical support. Earlier this week, three passengers suspected to be infected were evacuated from the MVHandas near Cape Verde. Now the ship and the nearly 150 people on board are headed towards Spain's Canary Islands.
It's not allowed to dock, only drop anchor offshore.
>> The island president called it good news to help reduce contagion.
>> I want to be unequivocal here. This is not SARS KV2. This is not the start of a COVID pandemic. This is an outbreak that we see on a ship.
>> Health officials are addressing fears of a repeat of the pandemic from six years ago. The virus that caused CO was one that we had never seen before. This one we've known for 30 years. We know how it spread when it is spread from person to person. It's with close contact.
>> Stressing the risk to the broader public is low. Jared Hill, CBS News.
Well, today a Utah judge is set to decide whether cameras will continue to be allowed in the murder case of the man charged with killing conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Attorneys for Tyler Robinson argue having photos and video of their client could create bias in a potential jury. Prosecutors, including and Kirk's widow, uh want to keep cameras in the courtroom. They argue transparencies necessary to combat conspiracy theories surrounding Kirk's assassination.
The Greater Boston Food Bank says high fuel prices are slowing its mission and the timing couldn't be worse. The cost to transport millions of pounds of food is cutting into the food bank's budget and making its mission more difficult.
WBC's Aaron Parcian shows us.
This 117,000 square foot facility near the south end is the center for serving more than 600,000 people facing food insecurity every month.
>> We are feeding families, so we have to make sure that we provide quality.
>> Inside the Greater Boston Food Bank is more than 4 million pounds of food. This is the number one requested item.
>> And the workers and volunteers >> making sure it gets in the hands of who need it most.
>> We are distributing over 110 million pounds of food a year.
>> And these are the engines that drive what they do here. Eight trucks on the road every single morning delivering hundreds of thousands of pounds of food to food pantries across eastern Massachusetts.
But as the rest of the country grapples with soaring fuel and diesel prices, those impacts also felt here at the food bank.
>> We have seen fuel costs go up one month to the next close to 30%.
>> COO Cheryl Shaund says it's >> simple math, Aaron. If I am spending more on fuel, I can't buy as much food.
>> But that's not much of an option. So instead, they're adjusting on the fly.
As the costs continue to go up, we have to find creative ways, efficient ways to save money.
>> And that could mean shifting where they bring produce in from and even what it is or isn't packaged in.
>> It does not affect the quality of the product and I save money because my focus is on the food.
>> Being flexible is the name of the game to make sure no one misses a meal. The team needs to stay nimble because I cannot say to a client that I am unable to feed you >> in Boston. Aaron Parcen, WBZ News.
>> When we come back, [music] a powerful message from the heart. Why Bernie and Phils is asking people to become organ donors.
Hey. Hey. Hey.
[music] Hey.
Hey. Hey.
Buy myself flowers. [music and singing] my name in the sand.
[music] >> What a lovely start to the day. Maybe a little cooler today. And Jason, I know a lot of uh moms [music] out there deserve the best weather. Every mom out there deserves the best weather all weekend long, but it's just not to be.
>> Yeah, it's just not going to be today. I I think even [music] for tomorrow, I think it's likely going to be the worst over the next few days or so. But if mom just needs a respit on Sunday, she needs to get in the garden, she needs a moment out of the house and just for some peace, I think we can do that. I think we can give that a gift to mom here.
Well, let's talk about where I left off with you last time here, friends. We were talking about our weather headlines here. Pretty decent conditions again today. More clouds moving around the cloud uh around the skies again later on this afternoon. And even for the start of the weekend, though, we will have a raw start to the weekend and also a bit of a wet note. I think Sunday for the most part will be pretty tranquil for moms. Let's talk about early next week as well here, friends, because even as we close out our Sunday on Mother's Day and spill over to Monday, we have rain showers ramping back up again here. So, we're expecting over the next 24 to 36 hours around a quarter up to/ inch of rain. We've kind of been dealing with that range over the past few days or so here and that's pretty much not going to change at least for our Saturday. Some models may actually push us a little bit closer to that 3/4 of an inch, but I think it will not be a wash out by any means in terms of flooding. Okay, I think if you have any sort of outdoor plans for tomorrow, they may or may not need to be rescheduled. 40s outside as of right now. Light jacket, light sweater, again necessary in terms of the first few days of the month of May here.
Take your pick here. We've had temperatures slightly above average. So, it's been a pretty decent start to the month of May, but also been a little bit of a wet start here and there since April began. We're still dealing with a deficit. Okay, so that means the drought conditions are still going to be going on here. Rain chances ramping up again tomorrow by Monday. Back dry again for the most part Tuesday and Wednesday.
Back wet again by Thursday and Friday and largely dry as of right now for next weekend. Next 24 hours here, friends. As you can see, they're stopping the clock roughly around 4 to 5 later this evening. More of those cumul cumulus clouds will be tracing across the skies.
Those are fat cumulus sort of cotton ball type of clouds there. They're indicating heavier rain is going to be moving back in. The cloud cover overspreads the base state there as we open up the doorways for our Saturday.
Light rain showers to start becoming more moderate and also steady throughout the day part for tomorrow. Most of the rain chances begin to wind down by midnight for us on Saturday, but a couple spot sprinkles can be expected come Sunday for Mother's Day. Increasing clouds again later today. We're going to keep those temperatures hoisted right around 60°. More or less the same for tomorrow, even though we're wetter tomorrow. Drier, but also warmer for us on Sunday for Mother's Day. Breaking down the day part for us on Sunday for mom. We'll be around the upper 50s for the start there on Sunday morning and then upper 60s, low 70s with increasing clouds by the tail end for us on Sunday night. Here's a wider scan showing what's going to be happening. We're going to push all this energy across the Bay State, ramping up the Northshore, also to the north coast there between the crown of Maine and also the south coast. still with some lingering spot rumbles we can expect for Saturday night and through early Sunday. Sunday morning up update uh excuse me opens up with a couple spot showers across central and northern Mass. Few extra clouds for the Boston area around 10 a.m. we start to get a little bit of clearing. But as that cold front approaches by Sunday night here, that's when the rain is going to be ramping up. It's going to be crawling all the way up north across the I95 corridor right into New England to allow for a bit of a raw and also a cool start. Chris, I'm not actually going to be surprised if we remain in the mid to upper 50s on Monday, but our chance of getting more drier and sunnier conditions than low 60s moves back in for Tuesday and Wednesday of next week.
>> All right, Jason, we'll take it. Thank you. Hey, a thousand drivers are now the lucky owners of one of the most coveted specialty place in Massachusetts. The state raffled them off yesterday in a special low number lottery. WBC's Mike Sullivan spoke to some of the winners.
When it comes to the MA250 plates, the blue is new. Its look is hot, too. And there's quite a few. In November of last year, we told you 29,000 people registered for the sleek and celebratory plate. With tens of thousands of these on the road, there must be some in the wild.
There are plenty in the wild now. Masdot saying nearly 80,000 people have one. A fraction of that figure will be getting a low-number plate.
>> This year, we've saved 1,000 iconic blue plates for a once- ina generation [music] opportunity.
>> That is the chance to land one through 999 or the coveted 1776 plate. So many people entered a lottery to win a plate number, you'd think it came with a cash prize.
>> We had 48,457 entrance. Massdot broadcast the winners online. Each number coming with a piece of state lore.
>> Number 17. Benjamin Franklin invented swimming flippers in 1717.
>> Somebody's like, "You won." I'm like, "What?"
>> Steven Nichols is Mr. 17. But at home, he's MA250 plate number two.
>> So, you already have a plate?
>> I do.
>> That might make some people pretty mad.
There's a lot of these they're trying to get.
>> It might. But hey, I rolled the dice and the dice rolled in my favor. Like many, he was drawn in by the uniqueness. The blue color stands out, matches the car.
>> Michael Wilkinson felt the same way.
>> So, I ended up with the MA 45 plate.
>> Number 45, also known as Webster Lake and of Native American origin. At 45 letters, is one of the longest and unique names in the world.
>> I'm not even going to try and pronounce it.
>> Lake Charag Manag Chabuna.
>> I'm like going for I'm like, I'm probably not going to win. And then I see my name pop up and I'm like, okay, that's crazy. Winners have until August 28th to come forward. It's going to cost them $40 every two years for the plate.
They can also turn down the offer if they don't like the number.
>> We did pull 100 alternate winners that we would go randomly through the list as if there were anybody to decline what they want.
>> For those of you who lost, we are saying there's a chance in Boston. I'm Mike Sullivan, WBZ News.
>> Hey, one of Dr. Seuss's most iconic stories is coming to life in Boston. A photo booth popup inspired by Oh, the places you'll go will be on the Rose Kennedy Greenway today. It's free and open to the public from 10:00 till 6:30.
Hey, the Red Sox are going to celebrate more than a century of history today, marking the 125th anniversary of the team's first home game. They're bringing back some heavy hitters, if you will, for a ceremonial first pitch that includes Wade Bogs, Pedro Martinez, and Big Poppy, David Ortiz. Now, yesterday the team honored this year's Red Sox Hall of Fame class. World Series champs Johnny Damon, John Lester, and Mike Timlin were all on the field for an honorary first pitch on the diamond. The Socks were hosting the race. They were down three nothing in the second. Watch this. Saddam Raphael's line drive goes off the third baseman's and short stops.
Gloves. Trevor Story would score. Same inning. Connor Wong sending one at the short stop. It looks like a nice flip.
>> Didn't end as a nice flip. That scored another run. And then a few minutes later, Caleb Durban yay between the legs.
>> Tie game there, but the Socks couldn't hang on. They lose 8 to four. They'll go against Tampa again tonight at Fenway.
First pitch at 710.
>> Also, the Socks have placed Roman Anthony on the 10day injured list. That was after he suffered a wrist sprain in Monday's game in Detroit. Anthony said he doesn't need surgery and the remove is retroactive to May 5th, so he could be back in a week.
>> Well, at Greater Boston starts with sharing a lifesaving message. Bernie and Phils has partnered with the New England Donor Services to raise awareness about the importance of organ donation. WBC's Logan Hall shows us why this topic is so close to the Bernie and Phil's family's heart. reason anybody should not be an organ donor. I mean, if if you can't use your organs, then you might as well save somebody else's life. For brothers Rob and Larry Rubin, the owners of Bernie and Phil's furniture store, organ donation is a deeply personal cause.
About a year ago, Rob was diagnosed with autoimmune hepatitis, leaving him in dire need of a liver and kidney.
>> I always say I was lucky enough to be the sickest one in the hospital, so therefore, I got the organs that came in about a week later. Thanks to the donation, Rob has a second chance at life. But their fight isn't over. His brother Larry was diagnosed with kidney disease at a young age and is still searching for a living kidney donor.
>> A person only needs one uh to live a long healthy life, and I only need one to uh to save my life.
>> The two brothers are using their platform to raise awareness, partnering with the New England donor services and holding events at their stores, encouraging people to sign up and become donors. They say it's been meaningful to see the community unite behind a common cause.
>> Most of the people in the room have been touched, whether it's their family or whether they're a donor or whether they're a recipient or whether they're waiting. Um, so it's it's almost like a community.
>> Yeah.

I got a warning for college grads looking for summer jobs or internships.
The Better Business Bureau says scammers are trying to take advantage of them with fake job and internship offers. The BBB says to make sure recruiters are legitimate, be wary of anyone who just messages you on an app. Never pay to submit an application or background check. you should never um be providing financial uh payment to get a job.

>> Well, good morning and thanks for joining us. It is Friday, May 8th. I'm Brianna Pitts. We are following a developing story that is impacting thousands of schools across the country, including right here in Massachusetts.
Hackers hit a platform used by universities and other school systems and it has forced some to postpone their final exams. WBZ's Anna Miler is in LOL with the impact.
This cyber security incident is a huge disruption for so many schools and it couldn't come at a worse time. Here at UMass Lowel, final exams for onampus classes have been cancelled today and pushed to Monday. The program that has been impacted is called Canvas. It's an online learning platform that schools use for assignments, notes, and tests.
The tech company that operates Canvas instructure was hit by a cyber security attack. The hacking group named Shiny Hunters, claimed responsibility for the breach and warned that student and faculty information, including student and teacher names, email addresses, student ID numbers, and private messages, will be leaked unless instructure pays up. This is impacting schools all over the country. These students in California say it's adding a lot of stress to the end of their school year.
>> It's finals season. Like I'm going to be graduating in like two or 3 weeks and you know I'm already anxious enough and now I can't you know now I'm unable to do my assignments and I I mean yeah I no one really knows what's going on.
>> Here are the local schools that we know have been impacted. Northeastern University, UMass Dartmouth, UMass Lowel, Emerson College, Harvard University, and Welssley public schools.
The hackers are threatening to leak personal information if they aren't paid by May 12th. In Lowel, Anna Miler, WBZ News.
>> Let's go outside everybody. Welcome to your Friday here, May 8th. We're talking about the second Friday being greeted with some extra clouds arriving by midday, spilling over into the afternoon. And we are out of the 40s this morning into the lower 50s as well.
Dupoint temperatures dry dry national temperatures. Take a look here, okay, as we put more numbers on the map here. 40s in areas north across the Montana region. 30s and 40s stripping out of the upper Midwest and even the upper 40s there. You can see over in Halifax, we have a range of 50s all the way down through uh Atlanta as well. But a lot of the colder weather from northern New England is nudging areas south there.
We're going to keep these nights pretty chilly here in the 40s widespread and maybe even the lower 50s if we can get more cloud cover to kind of pack in here. But again, we are dealing with more of a threat of more rain showers over the next few days. We are solidly into the spring season. Warm days, chilly nights, but also ramping up with more rain chances. In fact, the weekend actually begins with a bit of a wet start there. We are talking about light showers by tomorrow morning through midday throughout the afternoon. rain becoming heavier and also steadier to impact the Red Sox game at Fenway tomorrow. We'll talk much more about that. But of course, Mother's Day Sunday is also going to be here as well. We're talking about a nice balmy end to the week, but also more rain arriving by the tail end, spilling over from Sunday night through early Monday. We got a lot to impact in the 7-day forecast, which we will do coming up in just a few moments. Back to you.
>> A breaking overnight, an ambulance damaged in a crash with a Jeep in Matapan. This happened at Morton and Harvard Streets. Boston EMS tells us that the ambulance was transporting a patient at the time. They were taken to the hospital in another ambulance. Both EMTs were taken to the hospital to be checked out as well. And neighbors tell us it is a dangerous intersection.
Well, American flags hung from overpasses. Strangers lined the streets with their hands over their hearts. And first responders stood at attention in a somber tribute to a fallen state trooper. Last night, the body of trooper Kevin Trainer was escorted to a funeral home in Peody one day after he gave his life trying to stop a wrongway driver in Lynfield. Funeral services will be held for trooper trainer next week. Last night, an entire community gathered to show their respect and gratitude for his sacrifice. WBZ's Brandon Truit was there.
>> One of the most sacred traditions in law enforcement and one no family wants to take part in.
the dignified transfer of trooper Kevin Trainer carrying his body from the medical examiner's office in Boston to a funeral home in Peody.
>> After a 30inute journey, the procession arrived in Peody. Trooper trainers loved ones embracing each other outside of the funeral home.
>> It was beautiful. A beautiful Yeah, I've never seen anything like it.
>> It was pretty powerful.
Earlier Thursday, Trooper Trainer's fiance laid flowers on a cruiser at the Danvers barracks.
His obituary writes that being a trooper was his calling in Pub. Brandon Truit, WBZ News.
>> And trooper trainer will be honored at a funeral mass on Wednesday at St. James Church in Salem. Service begins at 11:00 a.m. You can find more information at wbz.com.
Well, a pilot tells us that she is doing okay after a crash landing on the Cape.
Her small plane landed upside down at the Cape Cod Gateway Airport in Hyannis yesterday afternoon. That plane had left from Felmouth and the pilot was the only person on board. We spoke to her over the phone last night and she said she wasn't physically injured.
The NTSB is investigating what caused that plane to go down.
To the war with Iran and President Trump says the ceasefire is still intact despite the two countries exchanging fire. Yesterday, the US fired what it's calling defensive strikes on Iranian boats and missile launchers. It followed an Iranian attack on three American Navy vessels. Those boats eventually passed through the straight of Hormuz to join the blockade. President Trump praised the move.
>> They trifled with us today. We blew them away. Every missile was knocked down.
Every drone was knocked down. And the people that shot it are no longer with us.
>> While the US is waiting on Iran to respond to its latest peace proposal, an Iranian spokesman says the plan is under review. Meanwhile, national gas prices jumped another 2 cents yesterday to455 a gallon. That's up more than 25 cents from last week. Here in Massachusetts, a gallon is up to$4.46. And it could get worse. Probably be at $490 by next week.
We could be at $5 by Memorial Day. And unless the street reopens, we are going to go above $5. And that's going to be very politically and economically painful. Well, the higher prices also mean higher profits for gas companies.
Yesterday, Shell announced that it brought in 6.9 billion in the first quarter. That's its highest profit in two years. However, lawmakers have argued that an audit could violate constitutional rules regarding separation of powers. The Supreme Judicial Court says Campbell has to file a report about her decision by June 6th. Well, the Patriots welcome some new faces to Foxboro. The rookies began a three-day mini camp today.
Offensive tackle Caleb Lomu was the first to be introduced. He walked out with Robert Jonathan Craft at Gillette.
He caught a redeye from Phoenix, piloted by his uncle. This is Lomu's first time in New England. This is definitely the coolest part right here, you know, coming to the stadium, being actually be in here and see everything, you know, have my picture up there and name. It's it's pretty cool to see and so it's been, you know, it's been an awesome day.
>> Well, the first full squad activities are set for later this month. Just ahead this morning on CBS News [music] Boston, the city of Boston wants to hear from you how they plan to address potholes in the city [music] today.
>> [music] [music] [music] >> Hey, [music] hey, hey.
What's next [music] in your next weather headlines? Well, let's talk about it here. Partly to mostly cloudy skies again arriving for us as we head towards the afternoon for our Friday here, friends. Temperatures are going to be just slightly below average again for daytime highs. But as we look at our weekend, it's going to be a very important weekend with a lot of moms being celebrated this weekend for Mother's Day. It's a bit of a dank start to the weekend here. Especially expecting pretty steady rain for us here tomorrow, even early next week. We're talking about a cool pattern, but also a bit of a wet pattern to kickstart early next week, especially on Monday. We are expecting around a quarter up to a half inch of rain. Some heaviest amounts rain likely going to be raking right across the axis of 495 down towards area south there once you get down towards 84, 81 as well, moving back down towards New York and also the Keystone State. upper 40s and also lower 50s across the Boston area as of right now. It's been a steadily kind of warm start to the month of May here over the past week or so.
And also still dealing with a lot of drought conditions. We are heading deeper into the month of May with at least a half inch in terms of a deficit for the month of May so far. And when you're talking about rain, a bit of a drier sort of midweek next week, but by the time we get to the tail end of next week, we're talking about more wet weather moving back in. streaming west northwest winds is actually going to keep te temperatures a little bit cooler again today as opposed to yesterday and even the day before. We topped out around 70° for us on Wednesday. Our Friday will likely be coming in just about 10° cooler. Developing clouds not only keep daytime highs stay a little bit cooler, but also going to keep overnight lows tonight a little bit milder. Even tomorrow morning, we are waking up with more clouds rather than sunshine around noon. We got heavier, steadier rain developing across the Bay State there and even perhaps even some rumbles possible for tomorrow afternoon throughout the evening hours. We're going to be back dry at least for the most part starting out on Sunday morning and then late rain arriving by Sunday night, spilling over into Monday of next week. How about 60 to 61°, give or take one or two degrees there on either side of 60. Same goes for tomorrow, but I believe as more rain fills back in, that rain cooled air may keep some locations confined to the upper 50s for tomorrow.
Ouch. We'll be around 70 degrees with interior spot showers possible for us here on Sunday here. Friends, we begin Sunday morning from Mother's Day in the mid to upper 50s. Maybe a lowle spot shower chance kind of trailing off of what's happening on Saturday for early Sunday. Milder with some sun and also cloud cover around the upper 60s by noon time on Sunday. Notice what happens here for the bigger sort of larger picture.
Okay, you can see that runaway band of rain showers over overspreading and moving north across the I95 corridor out of Connecticut through Rhode Island right into the Bay State there and also tracing right along the coast there, coastal bend of Maine. This is actually going to be pretty steady if you're going to be traveling up to Maine there this upcoming weekend or maybe have folks coming down from Maine. They're going to be running up to some afternoon showers for tomorrow. Then a bit of a dry slot between Saturday night and early Sunday. But this approaching coldront coming in out of the west that is actually going to accompany our late Sunday night through early Monday rain.
And a lot of the rain is going to be riding right up along that boundary.
Tuesday is back dry with some sunshine.
Few extra clouds, a little bit warmer by Wednesday. And look at that, more rain arriving between Wednesday and Thursday of next week.
>> Well, today Boston city councilors will be addressing concerns about potholes.
Councelor Ed Flynn will host the hearing at 10 a.m. at city hall. He says he's seeing a spike in complaints about road conditions and roads in need of repaving. Residents are invited to speak in person or provide written testimony.
Well, the FBI says they have caught one of the suspects accused of robbing two banks in Boston last week. Steven Harris of Falmouth is facing multiple charges.
Investigators say he and another mass man held up a Santandere bank in Roxberry and a Titi bank in Roslandale last week. Well, an ugly act of hate at Maynard High School. Officials there say police are investigating after students found anti-Semitic graffiti in a classroom on Monday and again on Wednesday. The school says it takes the matter extremely seriously.
Well, all aboard the Freedom Express. A group of fourth graders joined transportation secretary Shawn Duffy on the special Amtrak train yesterday. They celebrated the nation's 250th birthday with a trip from Washington DC to Philadelphia. The train has 10 coaches themed around historical events and is stuck out with the US themed rap.
>> All really well done everybody.
>> Well, that new train will also have rides between Boston to DC with stops in New York City, Philadelphia, and Baltimore [music] along the way. And this is a mustsea if you are spending Mother's Day weekend on the Southshore. Harbor Blooms is back for its eighth year. I went to Situit Harbor yesterday to watch how this stunning popup display comes together.
Such a special tradition and people come from all over to see it every year. Uh and this is all done by the team at Beach Plum Floral in Marshfield. They cover the entire facade of the Lucky Fin Cafe and thousands of flowers each year around Mother's Day. And you are looking at the finished product. But as we said, we were there yesterday as it was going up. It takes hundreds of hours of planning and a team of eight florists working non-stop up on ladders for about five hours to do this installation. But they tell me that Harbor Blooms has always been about more than just flowers. Every year this event benefits a different organization and this year it is giving back to the Laney for Love Foundation that provides financial support to local families who are experiencing the loss of a young child or a parent. And this year's theme is fairy house. That is in honor of Laney who loved the color purple. The woman walked by earlier and say thank you so much for doing this. So it just really makes it feel very fulfilling for us um for everyone involved in Harbor Blooms and for what it means to everybody. I think the best part is like the stories that we hear all weekend from different moms like you know what moms might be going through. Um, I have four children of my own, so I know like every day is not like sunshine and rainbows, and there's a lot that comes along with being a mom. So, to have this opportunity to celebrate moms. So, starting at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday, you can shop flowers, locally made candles. There's also Mother's Day portraits happening. A portion of all of those proceeds will go to the Love for Laney Foundation, and the flower display will be there through Monday if you'd like to go see it. The Better Business Bureau says scammers are trying to take advantage of them with fake job and internship uh internship offers. The BBB says to make sure recruiters are legitimate. Be wary of anyone just messaging on an app and never pay to submit an application or a background check.
>> You should never um be providing financial uh payment to get a job. So people are saying that they have unfortunately been asked to provide a small fee uh to run a background check and they're just, you know, it's a nominal fee. And just last year, Rob was diagnosed with autoimmune hepatitis, leaving him in dire need of a liver and a kidney.
>> Say, I was lucky enough to be the sickest one in the hospital. So therefore, I got the organs that came in about a week later. There's no reason anybody should not be an organ donor. I mean, if if you can't use your organs, then you might as well save somebody else's life.

Welcome back everyone. I'm Brianna Pitts. [music] Multiple US states continue to monitor passengers who left the cruise ship at the center of a deadly haunt virus outbreak. This morning, the UK health security agency says two British nationals have been diagnosed with the virus. Jared Hill has more from health officials who are reassuring the public.
>> It's very much, we hope, under control.
>> President Trump for the first time speaking on the haunt virus outbreak that has multiple Americans under close watch.
>> And also the risk of maintaining a lot of sunshine for our Friday also remains a bit more low as well. Well, we are talking about not only cloud cover moving back in, but also increasing rain chances as we eye our Saturday here, friends. Here's how we're settling up for the start of our Friday here. Mid to lower 50s out on Nantucket right now. 54 degrees. Couple degrees cooler once you come north and get on the land mass there for Chadam at about 52 degrees.
One degree cooler here in Boston along with Norwood. 45 right now up in Worcester. But the coldest area in the region right now is Keen at about 42 degrees. A lot of sunshine down in Stoton again for the start of our Friday morning through midday. We're talking about the mid to uper 50s there, but I believe we're only going to be topping out around 60° for the vast majority of several locations in New England, at least southern New England around the Boston area because of the thick clouds developing later on this evening here.
Friends, a couple low impact spot shower chances ramping up towards the tail end of the evening. Preip chances now. Take a closer look over the next 10 days.

Stone police are the latest group to issue a warning about a game being played by high schoolers. It's called Senior Assassin and police say it's causing confusion for residents and officers. WBZ's Christina Rex has more.
>> I have a gentleman outside of my house hiding with a gun. Looks like he's about to ambush somebody. I need somebody to come right away.
>> It came in as a terrifying 911 call. A witness reporting a man with a gun ready to ambush someone on Jerry Street and Stoneham Monday morning.
>> He's got a black hoodie on. He's got a gun in his right hand. He's got gray sweatpants.
>> Police responded shortly after 7:00 a.m.
and placed the man in cuffs.
>> All right. Lay in your face.
>> Yeah. Lay in your face.
>> But now Stone and police are warning of the dangers of using real looking guns.
>> We get a call a guy with a gun hiding in the bushes so they said that the guy seemed crazy.
The police chief here in Stoneham says let this mishap be a lesson to other students to not use realooking water guns in Stonem. Christina Rex WBZ News.
>> All starting today the US will begin revoking the passports of thousands of parents who owe child support. The State Department says it'll first focus on individuals who owe more than $100,000.
However, the program could be expanded to include parents who owe more than 2500. That threshold was set by a little enforced federal law passed in 1996.
The Greater Boston Food Bank says fuel prices are slowing its mission and cutting into their budget. We visited their facility near the South End. It houses millions of pounds of food to serve more than 600,000 people every month. The food bank says they can't slow operations as demand sees an uptick in the summer months. Are distributing over 110 million pounds of food a year.
The team needs to stay nimble because I cannot say to a client that I am unable to feed you. Well, to try and save some money, they're having to get creative, shifting where they bring produce in from, even what it is or isn't packaged.
Uh, for now, the food bank says operations are still running normally.
Well, a thousand drivers are now the lucky owners of one of the most coveted specialty license plates in the state.
Uh, the state raffled them off yesterday in a special lowumber lottery. WBZ's Mike Sullivan spoke to some of the winners.
A fraction of that figure will be getting a low number plate. This year, we've saved 1,000 iconic blue plates for a once- ina generation opportunity.
>> That is the chance to land 1 through 999 or the coveted 1776 plate. So many people entered a lottery to win a plate number, you'd think it came with a cash prize.
>> We had 48,457 entrance.
>> Mass dot broadcast the winners online.
Each number coming with a piece of state lore.
>> Number 17. Benjamin Franklin invented swimming flippers in 1717. [music] >> Somebody's like, "You won." I'm like, "What?"
>> Steven Nichols is Mr. 17, but at home he's MA250 plate number two.
>> So, you already have a plate.
So, I ended up with the MA45 plate.
>> Number 45, also known as Webster Lake and of Native American origin at [music] 45 letters, is one of the longest and unique names in the world.
>> I'm not even going to try and pronounce it.
>> Lake Charag Manag Chabuna Gunagmog.
>> I'm like going for I'm like, I'm probably not going to win. And then I see my name pop up and I'm like, okay, that's crazy.
>> Winners have until August 28th to come forward. It's going to cost them $40 every two years for the plate. They could also turn down the offer if they don't like the number.
>> We did pull 100 alternate winners that we would go randomly through the list as if there were anybody to decline what they want.
>> For those of you who lost, we are saying there's a chance in Boston. I'm Mike Sullivan, WBZ News.
>> All puppies training to become service animals took a special trip to see the New England Revolution. And the soccer team and needed service dogs have a longtime partnership and one of their puppies is actually named in honor of goalkeeper Matt Turner. Yesterday was their first time meeting one another.
>> The New England Revs fans voted on one of our puppies names and they voted Turner.
>> A little bit of surprise. It's weird calling uh someone else Turner. Uh that's for sure. So uh but no, it's super cute and it's a huge honor. All the dogs will go uh the dogs from needs will go on to a number of jobs. They are being trained to support veterans, people with disabilities, children with autism, and those with mental health needs. [music] Heat.
[music] [music] Heat.
>> [music] >> Hey.
[music] Hey, [music] hey, hey.
Heat. Heat. [music] >> [music] [music] >> a quarter towards the top of [music] the hour here. Let's talk about the lower 48 here on this Friday morning, everybody.
We have some cooler conditions prevailing, moving south of the Mason Dixon line. 40s and 50s across the heartland of the country. Meanwhile, we're pretty mild from Boston all the way down through Atlanta this morning.
57 degrees down there. Now, yesterday we received a new drought monitor from the Climate Prediction Center. And I don't have to tell you, we actually had an expanded drought conditions across southern New England, mainly for the Bay State there. Increasing drought conditions moving from a moderate to severe levels there. You can see with that darker color from Manchester all the way up through the crown of Maine, we're talking about widespread dry conditions that'll likely continue. We actually ended February with about an inch and a half in terms of the deficit and now we're just over a half inch in terms of a deficit for May. May has been a fair a fairly mild start to the month there or just about a week in.
Yesterday's highs topped at 65 degrees in Boston, but again, we've expected more and more of the shower threats to move on in keeping our temperatures and also a cloud clever in and around the area and also suffering from these increasing rain cooled conditions. So, we're talking about more or less still dealing with a lot of wet weather around a quarter of an inch up to an inch of rain and some of the highest amounts over the next 24 to 36 hours. Today, though, mainly dry and also quite comfortable. That sunshine this time of year with that higher sun angle feels really good on the skin and of course you have some cooler conditions prevailing. It just feels a little bit more refreshing. Tomorrow though, largely different. We're talking about more wet weather moving back in. Rain will begin to fill in shortly after sunrise tomorrow. back dry and also a bit more balmy for the most part on Sunday for mom's day. Even an afternoon lunch around noon to about 2 p.m. I think we're pretty much going to be okay. Saturday and Sunday in terms of the allergens, I know a lot of people are just probably going to postpone those outdoor plans for tomorrow, which is actually a safe bet. By Sunday, allergens begin to creep back up here.
But I'm actually not too concerned with Monday because I think as more rain moves back in for Monday, the allergens will begin to fall and that will affect our Tuesday into Wednesday. So, we have that runaway band of showers emerging for us here, crawling out of the Ohio River Valley across the Keystone State up through Jersey and also Connecticut, Rhode Island. The Bay State gets on the activity there, stopping the clock around 8 to 9:00 a.m. tomorrow morning.
But we have a lot more cloud cover. All this energy is moving from the southwest up to the northeast. So, heading up to the lakes and the mountains or even having friends come down to visit mom, aunt, sister, that will likely encounter even more rain for your Saturday.
Overall, the Midwest is kind of quiet right now. We have some renegade showers there off of the Lee of uh Lake Erie as well as up towards Lake Ontario as well.
But again, for the most part, the jetream is actually going to keep a lot of the warmer air down to the south right now and cooler conditions prevailing at least through the first half of early next week. Overall, temperatures will be scaling back into the 30s and mid to lower 40s overnight.
Obviously, if we have a blanket of cloud cover overnight, uh kind of keeping our temperatures elevated, it's not going to be that chilly, but we will keep a string of 60s around, at least for the most part over the next seven here.
Sunday being the warmest day and largely keeping Monday the coolest with those heavier and steadier rain showers.
>> A clip from a Nucket town meeting is getting some attention online for a clarification offered by town moderator Sarah Alger.
>> Thank you. I just want to clarify for the visiting press that when Mr. Topham says he was on crack, he means [laughter] he means the coastal resiliency advisory committee.
>> Thank you. [laughter] >> Jeez, this happened during a discussion on an erosion control project. The response has been viewed more than half a million times. [gasps] >> All right, to sports now. on the diamond. The Socks hosted the Rays uh down 3 nothing in the second. Son Raphaela with a line drive off a third baseman's and shorts stops gloves.
Trevor Story comes around uh 3-1. Same inning. Connor Wong seeds one or sends one, excuse me, at the top of the shortstop who puts it over the second.
Another run in there. And a few minutes later, Caleb Durban singles uh to right to get Wong in and make it a tie game.
Socks could not hold it though. They fall 8 to4. Tampa at Fenway again tonight. First pitch is at 710. And before the game, the Socks place Roman Anthony on the 10-day injured list after he suffered a wrist sprain in Monday's game in Detroit. Anthony said he doesn't need surgery. Plus, the move is retroactive to May 5th, so he could be back in a week. One of Hollywood's favorite lawyers is headed to TV for a Legally Blonde prequel. [music] >> [music] [music] >> Good morning. It's [music] 8:53. I'm Brianna Pitts. We have today's top stories. But first, meteorologist Jason Michael is here with a look at that next weather forecast. Uh Jason, a decent day today.
>> It is a yellow brick road, at least to start out on this Friday morning, Briana. Temperatures in still in the upper 40s and even lower 50s. We're actually going to be moving more towards the 60°ree mark as we head towards midafternoon, but more cloud cover likely be hanging overhead. As for your weekend, a bit of a wet start to the weekend. Overnight clouds will likely yield towards spot showers for tomorrow morning, becoming heavier and also steadier throughout the afternoon. We're going to be averaging around a quarter up to/ inch of rain. Back dry at least for the tail end of us on Sunday. We're still going to be in the upper 60s and low 70s. A bit of a tame start to the morning with the exception of a couple spot showers here and there off and on from the trail end of what we're going to be expecting on Saturday for early Sunday morning. But high noon for lunch for mom on Sunday seems pretty good to me. lowle sort of allergens over the weekend because of the wet weather. And even on Monday, I'm expecting allergens to kind of pull back a wee bit. That runaway band of rain is actually going to be arriving overnight tonight, spilling over to early tomorrow morning, 8 to 9:00 a.m. Rain showers becoming heavier and also steadier at times. If you're going up to the lakes and the mountains or even have friends coming down into southern New England, you're definitely going to be encountering some wet weather tomorrow. So, outdoor plans may or may not need to be rescheduled tomorrow. And for the Red Sox game tomorrow, keep a close eye because it also may be rescheduled courtesy of the wet weather. More wet weather arriving by Monday. And look at Tuesday and Wednesday. A little bit warmer, but also a little bit drier and bet wet again unfortunate for the tail end of the 7-day come Thursday. Bri.
>> All right, Jason. We'll get a check of traffic for you right now here and we are taking a live look at the expressway in Dorchester over by Freeport Street in the gas tank. It is slow and go especially northbound as you try to make your way into the city. So, Brain Tree of Boston, uh, give yourself a good 30 minutes to get in there. An ambulance damaged in a crash with a Jeep in Madapan. Here are your top stories. This happened at Morton and Harvard streets.
Boston EMS tells us the ambulance was transporting a patient at the time. They were taken to the hospital and another ambulance and both EMTs were taken to be checked out. Neighbors tell us it is a dangerous intersection. Family, friends, and strangers line the streets for a procession honoring fallen state trooper Kevin Trainer. He was killed early Wednesday morning while trying to stop a wrongway driver on Route 1 in Lynfield.
Last night, a dignified transfer brought his body from the medical examiner's office to a funeral home in Peody.
>> Sad. Such a long young life taken too soon and such a terrible tragedy for his family.
>> Everybody's worst nightmare, right? Sad, devastating. Well, a memorial outside of the Damper's barracks has also been growing. Yesterday, Trooper Trainer's fiance laid flowers on a cruiser stationed outside. Trainer will be honored at a funeral mass on Wednesday at the St. James Church in Salem. The FBI says they have caught one of the suspects accused of robbing two banks in Boston last week. Steven Harris of Falmouth is facing multiple charges.
Investigators say he and another mass man held up a Santandere bank in Roxberry and a TD bank in Roslandale last week. And Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Campbell's facing a 30-day deadline to decide whether she'll represent the state auditor in her attempt to sue lawmakers. The yearslong dispute centers around Diana Daglio's attempt to audit the legislature. In 2024, voters approved a ballot question giving her that authority. However, lawmakers have argued an audit could violate constitutional rules regarding separation of powers.
