Fort Union National Monument, established in 1851 in New Mexico, served as a critical military supply post protecting travelers, trade routes, and settlements along the Santa Fe Trail. The site is historically significant for its connection to the Maxwell Land Grant, one of the largest land grants in American history, which covered nearly 2 million acres and led to complex disputes over land ownership that dramatically affected settlers and local families in the American Southwest.

Walking Through History at Fort Union National Monument本站添加:
Good morning.
Look how calm the lake is.
Woke up to 29° this morning.
Chilly, chilly.
Snow on the mountain.
Oh, Sammy says, "Let's run.
Let's run."
Want to show you the snow on the mountain.
Ooh.
There you go.
That lake is so calm.
Of course, there's traffic right over there.
Traffic is horrible.
We're on the highway, though.
So.
It's to be expected.
So, we're about to head out and go to Fort Union uh National Monument. It's about 25 mi from here.
Neither one of us have been there. And I'm always to want to go to see a fort, go see some national monument or things like that. But, I'm reading this book lure lure lore >> [clears throat] >> lure lore and legends.
And this is a book about Eagle Nest and Angel Fire and up and through the um the Moreno Valley.
And um it mentions Fort Union in here.
So, I want to go check it out, kind of put things together.
Um So, if you've seen some of my videos of Eagle Nest and Cimarron and Angel Fire, we had gone to I guess it was in Cimarron.
And we had gone to the St. James Hotel, that's in here.
And um a museum and it taught us a lot about Maxwell.
And Maxwell had the high the largest land grant in the United States.
Not in New Mexico, not the largest in New Mexico.
But the largest land grant in the United States. That's what this book is about or the first chapter. I finished the first chapter.
And um Fort Union would um How do I say this?
Not It would help the land grant the land company. It later became known as Maxwell Maxwell land grant and railroad company or something like that. Anyway, known as the company.
>> [laughter] >> So, anyway, I'll know more later, but um I'll be talking about this book some more cuz we're going to be in Eagle Nest and Angel Fire.
And I'd like to not everywhere I go, but um what places I go, I like to either pick up a book or research about it on the internet. We're headed to Fort Union.
First, we got to get something to eat.
Can't go on an empty stomach. Those Easter egg hunters need to come back.
>> [laughter] >> They missed some.
Yeah.
There's probably some more back here.
And the ones that hit them didn't go back to see to make sure they were all found.
This is trash.
So, we stopped here on the Mountain Branch Trail Ruts, the Santa Fe National Historic Trail.
Right across the road is the Santa Fe Trail right before the curve.
And across that way.
Santa Fe Trail in Fort Union.
Look at this. They have a QR code for an audio description.
>> Oh, that's cool. Yeah, let's go see what it says. It says go nps.gov.
So, yeah.
>> man? It's going to be audio? Is it up this whole area? Yeah, uh Wait.
They have the wrong Trail of Tears.
>> Trail of Tears in Hopkinsville.
They don't even have the right >> Hopkinsville? I don't even know where that is.
But they don't even have the right Well, it was a nice idea.
>> [laughter] >> Oh my gosh.
>> Well, maybe we'll learn more at the fort.
Yeah.
Yeah.
>> What?
I don't know what gets the best these days, huh?
Keep out unstable walls.
Wow.
See the snow?
That's cool.
So, that's the Santa Fe Trail right there.
