Rome expanded from a small kingdom into the powerful Roman Republic and later the Roman Empire. At its peak, the Roman Empire controlled huge territories across Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. Roman engineering, law, military strategy, and architecture deeply influenced Western civilization.

During the Middle Ages, Italy became divided into competing kingdoms and powerful citystates like Venice, Florence, and Milan. Figures like Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo helped transform human history through art and innovation. In 1861, the Kingdom of Italy was officially established, uniting much of the peninsula under one nation. During the 20th century, Italy became a fascist state under Bonito Mussolini and fought alongside Nazi Germany during World War II. After World War II, Italy abolished the monarchy in 1946 and became a democratic republic.
