MarcoMeatball astutely captures how *Mouse* transcends mere retro-stylization by utilizing big band jazz as a functional narrative engine rather than just aesthetic wallpaper. It is a sophisticated analysis of how rhythmic tension can bridge the gap between noir atmosphere and high-octane gameplay.

Seriously, Mouse PI Soundtrack Has No Business Being This GoodAdded:
I would not say that I'm the biggest first person shooter fan in general, but you got to look at this. This is Mouse PI for Hire. I wasn't paid to talk about this. It's just like one of these games that I feel is really important to talk about. And the music is Oh my god. Just ju just listen. Look at this.
>> What a crappy.
Now, I was given the game early and I've been able to play through a a big chunk of it, but what I've been most amazed by is that the soundtrack is just awesome.
There's big band swing. I mean, just like blues. I This is something that is really I'm noticing is making a a real real presence in gaming. Listen to the way that Patrick Selena really really took this and ran with it. Here's an example. Uh let's do a case like no other.
body Isn't that amazing? Like hearing the the that slow jazz ensemble just like passing the ball. Um, this is a a soundsscape that I don't know very much about, but like it just naturally has that noir investigator PI thing and obviously looking at the game footage with the black and white stuff, it's just really really fun. I just love this cartoony retro thing, you know, like old school Mickey kind of aesthetic.
Obviously, I just love how you hear like this twinge of regret in the sound.
Check out some of the faster stuff. So, this is uh let's go with sling sling sling. Check this out.
Like this is giving like walking, you know, walking on the rits, putting on the rits.
And up up.
It's crazy to hear an ensemble like this, a big band swing ensemble come together and really create music for first of all for a video game, but also like really really tie in that sense of tension and drama and you know rooting and tooting and shooting and gunning.
It's just fun honestly. Like there's another track here uh I think it's dealing with crooks. Check out this is another fast one I think. Yeah, nice lower uh berry sacks coupled with the upright bass of course the drum set.
Right.
He It's just fun. It has this frenetic energy to it, but it's also very controlled and very poised. And that just leads to just a a really genuinely fun time. So, as you're going about shooting, of course, you have, you know, dynamite, you have a pistol, you have a shotgun, you have this like poison gun, you have a a j I forget what they call it in the game, but it's essentially a, you know, machine gun from the 20s, you know, and you got your fists if you want to go fist the cuffs. And it's just fun.
I mean, it's fun. The audio design is amazing. Every time you enter into a battle, there's this like ring sound.
Ding ding. And then when you're finished, ding ding. And it's cool how the music shifts and and just the the balance between like when you arrive at your um you know your your kind of your home neighborhood.
You know, this is Jack Pepper's theme. Who who is who you're playing as?
But I but I just think it's really important to celebrate uh you know this is a small team. This is a small project. I mean you know they've got some really great you know Troy Baker's in this game.
Indie to me is is the way forward for a lot of this the complaints that people have about AAA studios. And I think like we have to celebrate these endeavors, you know, we have to celebrate people really taking a risk. And like this is the most one of the most audacious first-person shooters I've certainly ever played. Like it just it's not sci-fi. It's not it's not like space.
It's not military. It's not it's just like private PI mouse. It's just cool, you know? Like it has it has the vibes and the combat is unique. It's it's fun to look at and it just feels like you're walking into like a cartoon from the 1910s, 1920s. And that is something that is so hard to find. And I think also like is this vessel of creativity that we really really really ought to celebrate. And so I was really grateful that they gave me an early code, but then Patrick specifically sent me over the soundtrack cuz it's really really fun and it's a great soundtrack to play while you're, you know, fighting enemies and stuff. It just feels really good to experience. So definitely check it out.
I mean, it it's it's cool. It's really cool. And and I think we need to celebrate games that try new things. and and I love this sound and I'm I'm starting to uncover this sound, this big band jazz style. Thanks a ton.
