The Andromeda Galaxy (M31) is the largest and closest major galaxy to our Milky Way, located approximately 2.5 million light-years away in the constellation of Andromeda. It is a vast spiral galaxy containing hundreds of billions of stars, along with dust, gas, and a supermassive black hole at its center. Visible to the naked eye under dark skies as a faint, elongated patch of light, Andromeda is currently approaching our galaxy at roughly 110 km/s. The two galaxies are expected to collide and eventually merge in about 4-5 billion years.
