[music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] >> 3 2 1 Booster ignition and lift off.
The crew of Artemis 2 now bound for the moon. Artemis 2 now bound for the moon.
>> [music] [music] >> Next great voyage to begin.
>> [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] >> Houston, go for Orion.
Great calling. The rocket is on its own.
Four brave explorers ready to ride the most powerful rocket NASA has ever launched.
Humanity's next great voyage begins.
>> [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] >> This is the timeline of the Artemis 2 mission.
>> [music] >> It starts with liftoff, day one, when the rocket leaves Earth and places Orion into orbit.
Over the next 2 days, the crew stays close to Earth, checking every system before going deeper.
Then comes a powerful push, translunar injection, sending them toward the moon.
As days 3 and 4 pass, they drift through deep space, watching Earth fade away.
By day 5, the moon's gravity takes over.
On day 6, they fly past it, closer than humans have been in decades.
Then they swing around and head home.
After a few days returning through space, day 10 ends with a fiery reentry and splashdown in the ocean.
A full journey around the moon and back.
>> [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] >> All new photos released by NASA show the first images taken [music] by the Artemis crew. For the very first time, we're seeing Earth from the Orion spacecraft. [music] >> [music] >> It's just everything from the training, but in three dimension and absolutely unbelievable. This is incredible.
Would you look at that, man?
Wow, what Wow. Oh, man.
Dude.
No way.
Phenomenal.
Gone.
>> [music] [music] [music] >> From inside the Orion [music] capsule, nicknamed Integrity, first words that all's good in Earth's orbit. Welcome on board the Integrity spacecraft.
Currently, the crew is more than 100,000 miles from the Earth. You can see the entire globe [music] from pole to pole.
You can see Africa, Europe. If you looked really close, you could see the northern lights. I really like it up here.
>> [laughter] >> I wish I could have gotten here sooner.
The four astronauts on this 10-day mission are paving the way for future lunar surface operations as they circumnavigate the Earth's only natural satellite. Copy, Moon Joy.
>> [music] >> Copernicus, easily all I see. This is so awesome.
We look like we're smiling at you.
Like a little Cheshire cat.
>> [music] >> I thought we just caught that Actiwatch sync. If I had my own, I'd sync it with you.
>> [music] [music] >> We're completely distracted for a little bit.
To me, it's a great can't take love to the stars, then what what are we doing?
Like why are we even going?
>> On board Orion, there were tears and hugs. So, we are in good shape here for entry and splashdown >> [music] >> as Artemis enters the Earth's atmosphere.
Your trajectory is nominal and your recovery teams have visual.
Houston, Integrity splashdown. Sending post-landing command now. Copy, splashdown. Waiting on VLDR. Splashdown confirmed at 7:07 p.m. Central Time.
>> [music] >> You can hear it.
Jubilation here in the flight controller.
These four astronauts who just made history [music] as the first crew to return to the moon since 1972.
>> [music] [music] >> I'm a guy who would be here.
>> [snorts] [music] >> In all of this emptiness you have this oasis, this beautiful place that we get to exist [music] together.
>> [music] >> We will explore.
We will build.
>> [music] >> But ultimately, we will always choose Hertz.
We will always choose each other.
