A 1970 study demonstrated that chewing xylitol gum five times daily (equivalent to 5g) can reduce plaque-forming bacteria by 98% over six months, with 6.5g being the optimal daily dose; xylitol works by feeding beneficial bacteria while preventing plaque bacteria from producing sticky tendrils that attach to teeth, making plaque slippery and easier to remove with proper brushing and flossing.

How to get rid of plaque quicklyAdded:
This is how you're going to stop plaque for good. In 1970, they did a study where they took women who had 100% plaque. That means their mouths were really laden with plaque. I don't have to describe it to you. If you've ever scraped that white stuff off your teeth on your fingernail, it is a seething mass of plaque-forming bacteria. And they layer because they're really sticky, they layer to one another and they grow so thick, that layer, if you don't remove them brushing them off and they're very sticky. That's the problem.
Then it just gets so big, eventually you can see it. See it.
And so they took these women with 100% plaque >> [music] >> and they gave them the equivalent of 5 g of xylitol every day. They actually gave them a card with xylitol gum on it and had them chew it for 5 minutes, then spit it out after eating, in the morning, after mid-morning, after lunch, in the afternoon, before bed at night. That's the only thing they did.
They didn't change anything else about how they >> [music] >> didn't look after their teeth or their diet. They simply had the five pieces of chewing gum.
Now, at the end of the month, the researchers measured [music] and the amount of bacteria, these plaque-forming bacteria, had gone down.
After 2 months, it was down more. If you know anything about graphs, it was a straight-line graph. Over 6 months, the plaque levels went down like steps down an escalator. They went progressively down until 98% of the plaque bacteria had vanished.
We now know, because that was the first study and it and it was done in a country where people have really bad teeth. Then they did more studies on different kinds of populations and found that actually 6.5 g of xylitol is the sweet spot. If you have plaque, you need the equivalent, if you can, of 6.5 g of xylitol every day, split up, like they did, in five divided amounts.
I would always recommend, if you're suffering from plaque, to make sure the very last thing at night, before you go to sleep at night, on [music] your teeth, is xylitol. And the xylitol is going to feed This is how it works. It feeds the good bacteria. It doesn't kill anything. It actually feeds the plaque-forming bacteria, but when it gets into their cell, they can't process it.
And because they can't process it, they can't make the sticky tendrils that grab onto your tooth and grab onto each other, so they become Plaque, literally, becomes slippery.
And if you get a nice flossing toothbrush, like I recommend, or use the mouth rinses that I recommend, you will wash these now looser plaque bacteria away.
