The decision to amputate reflects a necessary shift from sentimental preservation to a pragmatic focus on the animal's overall quality of life. It highlights the difficult ethical balance between maintaining physical integrity and ending a cycle of chronic, self-inflicted suffering.

Ugh Gizmo
Added:No, you can't sit there and look cute.
You're bad. You are so bad.
You did this to yourself.
Yes, you did that.
You did that. There won't be any treats after this.
No, there won't.
Daddy might even take the leg.
I'm just kidding. We can't I love you, buddy.
I do, but you're so you frustrate me so badly. Daddy doesn't need the stress.
How's my little guy?
Well, hey everybody. I wasn't going to do this um because it's a lot to explain, but I I've always been very open with you guys about everything.
Um yeah, here's my little Gizmo man. And if you can take a peek, you can see his knee.
Gizmo was all of maybe a couple days away the other night from being uh free and clear of having to wear this damn collar. The scab on his knee was down to the size of a grain of rice.
Well, he managed in the middle of the night to get his cone down around his waist to where he could actually bend his body around and began eating his leg in the middle of the night. I found him the next morning. It looked like a murder scene.
Called the doctor Saturday morning. They couldn't see him till Monday. No big deal. I've dealt with this before and much like he is now we're we're not going to cover the wound. We're going to use Manuka honey. It's a great thing. We got antibiotics, of course.
But so Saturday night I put the Manuka honey on him Saturday. Saturday night he looked great. Last night he looked great or Sunday night he looked great. Uh I mean it was a big wound, but it was dried out already. It was starting to heal.
And then last night in the middle of the night he was using he's using this cone this thing now and I left it a little bit looser than this. Sorry, bud. I'm going to demonstrate on you. I left it so it had this little bit of gap just to make sure that he had enough room around the neck. I didn't want to over tighten it, right? Which I found out from my doctor, this is not over tightening. So, my bad.
What I ended up doing was causing a place where he spun this around, his head went down into there, and last night he annihilated his leg again.
So, I didn't like I said, I didn't want to share this with you guys because you know, there's people out there who say we're neglecting him, we're not paying attention. No, that's not the case, man. This is him doing it to himself, and like I said, seems to happen in the middle of the night when nobody's watching, when you're supposed to be sleeping.
So, the good news is is obviously he can't feel a damn thing.
Um and I've talked to my doctor cuz I told Gizmo right here, hey Giz, I told him I said, "I'm sick of this bud.
You know, like I we've got big bigger problems to worry about at the house. We got got babies that are getting sick cuz of old age." Yeah, I don't want to have to worry about your knee, and you're not having fun sitting here in your cone all day, right?
So, uh we got a last-ditch effort. We're going to do this one more time. He's taking the meds, we're going to go back on Manuka honey, back in isolation. I know that's not fun, is it? You get to sleep with us at night, but during the daytime, you're you're by yourself, and that sucks.
So, um yeah, my little Giz, we're going to we're going to give this one more big shot. We're going to look at it come Monday, and if the doctor says okay, yeah, cuz it's never going to heal normal. It's going to look gnarly, but who cares? I mean, it's a leg that's useless anyway.
Um you know, it's completely locked up.
There's no muscle mass in it. There's it does nothing for him. But, the problem now is is this is recurring.
He's done this two now three times.
Um and so, it's like, you know, when I hate to say it, but like when animals got a taste for blood, kind of thing, or this in this case, I got a taste to chew on my own leg cuz it's my favorite chew toy.
We might end up taking this leg off. Um if so, I'm going to tell you right now, next Monday when we go in to see his appointment, if everything seems to be good, we're going to keep trying with this uh this um treatment. But, the moment the moment, even when it's completely healed, if you do this one more time, mister, you're going to be without a back leg.
Okay, I'm sorry bud. I know. I know daddy talking stern to you. But you're so frustrating. Yes, you are sweetheart.
So so anyway, so prayers for Gizmo cuz I'd like you to keep the leg aesthetically it's cute, but it does serve no purpose. So if you don't keep screwing around if you keep screwing around we're taking it.
Okay, love you big man.
