Georges Bataille argues that the bourgeois world, characterized by the primacy of commodities and industrial production, creates a fundamental contradiction: while capitalism reduces human beings to the condition of things, it simultaneously generates a contrary impulse to place what is essential outside the world of activity. Bataille contends that solving material problems is necessary but not sufficient for human liberation, as the solution of material difficulties remains radically distinct from achieving a sovereign existence where man is not merely a thing. The remnants of feudalism and religion represent an unconscious desire to make the worker a thing, and true liberation requires not just the elimination of material obstacles but also the denunciation of values tied to non-productive expenditures. The working class, by starting from things to which they were reduced, represents a radical affirmation of material forces and a negation of spiritual values that subordinates man to hidden ends.
