This Choral Evensong service from Durham Cathedral presents a theological message about Christian hope and transformation, drawing from Isaiah 32:12-17 which prophesies that justice will dwell in the wilderness and righteousness in the fruitful field, bringing peace and kindness, and from Romans 5:1-11 which teaches that through Christ's death, believers receive God's righteousness and peace, with suffering producing endurance, character, and hope that does not disappoint because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit.

Choral Evensong from Durham Cathedral - Tuesday 12 May 2026Added:
Sit here.
What the Is glory.
A very warm welcome. Welcome to Durham Cathedral for coral even song and a special welcome this evening to students joining us for student Tuesday. At this service the prayers and responses the first part of which we have just heard are set to music by William Smith a former minor canon here at Durham and the Magnificat and Nitus are s according to Henry Pel setting in G minor. But first the choir will sing Psalm 18 verses 30- 51 during which the congregation is invited to be seated.
Christmas.
might I love You must Glory.
We shall Christmas.
Shall we go?
people are I want to might come Glorious.
The first lesson is taken from the 32nd chapter of the book of the prophet Isaiah. Beginning to read at the 12th verse, the prophet foretell of a time of destruction which which will be followed by a time of justice, righteousness, and peace.
Be your guests for the pleasant fields, for the fruitful vow, for the soil of my people growing up in thorns and rhymes.
Yes, for all the joyous houses in the jubilant city. For the palace will be forsaken, the popular city deserted, the hill and the watchtower will be condemned forever. The joy of wild asses, a pasture for flocks until a spirit from on high is poured out on us and the wilderness becomes a fruitful field and the fruitful field is deemed a forest.
Then justice will dwell in the wilderness and righteousness abide in the fruitful field.
The effect of righteousness will be peace and the result of righteousness, kindness and trust forever.
My people will abide in peaceful habitation in secure dwellings.
The forest will disappear completely and the city will be utterly.
Happy will you be who soul beside every stream the ox and the donkey the first My spirit praised.
gener.
might spirit.
We are scatter. Foreign What a wonderous. Glor.
The second is written in the letter to the Romans chapter 5. Beginning with the first verse, St. Paul teaches that through Christ's death, we have been given the righteousness and peace of God.
Therefore, since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand. And we boast in our hope of sharing the glory of God. And not only that, but we also boast in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character.
Character produces hope. And hope does not disappoint us because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.
For while we were still weak, at the right time, Christ died for the ungodly.
Indeed, rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though perhaps for a good person, someone might actually dare to die. But God proves his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
But more surely then, now that we have been justified by his blood, will we be saved through him from the wrath of God.
For if while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of his son, much more surely, having been reconciled, will we be saved by his life. But more than that, we even boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.
Here ends the second lesson.

Let us pray.
Let us pray for grace to follow the blessed example of our Lord who came into the world not to be served but to serve others.
Almighty God, we give you thanks for the wonderful demonstration of your love for the world in the gift of your son who laid down his life for sinners that we might be reconciled to you.
through the power of his risen and ascended life. We pray that you would bring to completion the work of salvation in us that we may be fully established in your grace and peace and offer our lives in service to our neighbors through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
Let us pray for the world for which Christ died.
and justice nations.
Almighty God, the Father of all mankind, we pray thee to turn to thyself the hearts of all peoples into their rulers, that by the power of thy Holy Spirit, peace may be established among the nations on the foundation of justice, righteousness, and truth.
He was lifted up on the cross to draw all men unto himself, even by Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
Now in a moment of silence, let us offer our own private prayers and supplications to Almighty God.
Almighty God, who hast given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplications unto thee, and does promise that when two or three are gathered together in thy name, thou wilt grant their requests.
Fulfill now, O Lord, the desires and petitions of thy servants, as may be most expedient for them, granting us in this world knowledge of thy truth, and in the world to come, life everlasting.
Amen.
In communion with the blessed Mary, the virgin, our saints, feed and comfort, and all who have offered their prayers here today, we unite our prayers in the words of the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with us all ever. Amen.
It has been very good to welcome you to as people have gathered in worship this evening. Both with those gathered here in church itself and with those who join us online. For students who are here for student Tuesday, we will gather under the tower as usual after this service.
If you're a student or this is your first time visiting us, please do join us this very well. Just follow the tower. I say >> advance warning as well that this Thursday we celebrate the feast of the ascension a principal festival in the church's calendar and we mark that in a variety of ways but especially at 5:30 with a festival eukarist at which the dean will presside and very warm invites to join us as we chasing Christ is I'm sorry.
Oh my god.
This is Elena.
