[00:00:07]They were a treacherous series of rapids, narrow, rocky, [music] with strong currents that smaller vessels could barely fight. Some of the larger ships in Zeeb's [music] fleet simply could not pass.

[00:00:21]And as they approached the gorge in early September 1944, scouts [music] brought back terrible news.

[00:00:29]The route was blocked.

[00:00:31]Whether by sunken obstacles, partisan-controlled batteries on the cliffs, or the simple physical impossibility of getting deep-draft ships through the rapids, the way west was shut.

[00:00:44]The fleet [music] stopped just downstream of the gorge near a small Serbian village on the south bank, a village [music] called Prahovo. Now, picture the situation. Behind them, the entire Red Army advancing [music] along both banks of the Danube. Around them, hundreds of ships packed together in a stretch of river only a few hundred meters wide. Above them, Soviet aircraft. Ahead of them, >> [music] >> an impassable gorge. 200 vessels, tens of thousands of crewmen, trapped.
