A radar fill level transmitter measures tank level by emitting electromagnetic waves and measuring the time of flight for the signal to travel to the material surface and reflect back, enabling non-contact measurement of liquids, sludges, slurries, and solids in harsh industrial environments, though it cannot measure liquid-liquid interfaces and may experience signal loss from turbulence or obstructions.

Radar Fill Level Transmitters Explained | How Radar Measures Tank Level Without Contact | DiopterAdded:
So, once we look at another type of level transmitter, and today we'll be talking about the radar field level transmitter.
A radar field level transmitter measures the distance between the transmitter installation points and the surface of a process material located at a distance. It measures the distance by measuring the time of flight of a traveling wave. The radar type level transmitter has a transceiver that sends the electromagnetic wave signal and receives the signal after reflecting from the object. Thus, the transmitter measures the time of flight. The basic working principle of the radar field transmitter is sending a microwave to the vessel or the tanks and knowing the time it takes to travel to and fro from the level field in the vessel or the tank. The difference between the radar field level transmitter and the guided microwave level field transmitter is that the guided wave use wave guide probes to guide the electromagnetic wave to and from the process.
While the radar field send electromagnetic waves out through open space to reflect off the process material. The radar field device suffer much more signal loss than guided wave radar devices due to the natural tendency of electromagnetic radiation to disperse over space.
Wave guides combat this signal loss by channeling the radio energy along a straight line path.
Now, let's look at some the advantages of the radar field level transmitter.
For one, it provides a top-down direct measurement as it measures the distance to the surface.
Another one is that it can be used in liquids, sludges, slurries, and some solids.
And it is good for corrosive and dirty environments.
Now, the disadvantages of the radar field level transmitter is that it can only measure a gas-liquid interface, but not a liquid-liquid interface.
If the surface is turbulent either from agitation, product blending, or splashes, more of the signal is lost. Another disadvantage is that obstruction in the tank can cause false echoes.
From the video today, I'm sure you've learned uh something about the radar field level transmitter.
