CBC Windsor News: May 27, 2026Added:
habitats only exist here. They're the rarest ecosystems in the country. We get to visit them whenever we want here in the city of Windsor. It's a privilege to have the opportunity to come and see these incredibly diverse species. And if we do not do this kind of work to maintain the integrity of these spaces, biodiversity as a whole starts to decline. And that not only affects residents in the city of Windsor, it affects all of us across the country.
That was pretty thorough. That's your definitive guide to wild par snip in Windsor. Couldn't ask for more. At your local grocery store checkout, most things are tax-free unless they're prepared foods and drinks. Ontario's NDP wants to cut the HST on those items, but as Lorenda Reikop reports, the party's proposed bill has been voted down.
You pay tax on prepackaged sushi at the grocery store. It's the same for those rotisserie chickens and pre-made salads as well as less healthy options, anything prepared. An NDP bill aimed to get rid of that extra expense. At a time when inflation at the grocery store is up, >> the eyes being 39, the naysay being 68, I declare the motion lost.
>> The Ford government with its majority defeated the bill. I thought it was shameful to see the government all including the premier rush in to vote against that legislation.
>> NDP leader Maret Styles says it would have been a small measure to help with affordability.
>> What have we seen from this government?
Nothing. Nothing that actually helps people in their pocketbook.
>> The other parties backed this bill though the Liberals wanted safeguards.
>> A maximum amount on some of the food that's being purchased. I mean, the goal here isn't necessarily, I think, to help the people that are shopping at Puseteries, you know, to save money.
This is about everyday people that are are looking to get by and to try to to save money on their food.
>> Anything we can do to help lower costs for folks is something I think we should do. That's exactly why, you know, I think it was wrong before government voted against it.
>> The finance minister defended voting against the bill, saying the government already has acted on affordability. It's the same argument he made two months ago when he released his budget.
>> We acted early. We cut the personal income tax for the lowest income uh brackets. We cut uh we indexed payments for Ontario disability to inflation to low-income seniors. Not only we index it to inflation to put more money in their pocket.
>> It's not a surprise that the bill failed as opposition legislation rarely passes, relying on support from the government.
Lorenda Reikov, CBC News Toronto.
In federal government news, the feds say there's a new deal to sell liqufied natural gas or LNG to Germany. 1 million tons per year from a planned LNG project in British Columbia.
>> This contract represents the first agreement that we see long-term lowcarbon LG from Canada being shipped to our allies in Europe. a clear example of how we can not only support global energy security, reduce reliance on coercive actors like Russia, advance indigenous leadership and equity, but also deliver on our promise to Canadians to diversify and expand our trade.
>> The 10 billion LNG project has regulatory approval already and has the support of a local First Nation whose land it would sit on. But some environmental groups and other First Nations oppose it. Canada's energy minister says LG exports would begin in the early 2030s.
Still lots more to come on the show. Can Canada learn any lessons from Brexit?
I'm talking about when it comes to this Alberta separation referendum deal.
We're digging into it. Plus, an update on that group trapped in a cave in Southeast Asia. Have they been found and will they get out? Details next.
Hey, hey, hey.
Hey, hey, hey.
What do you feel?
Hey, hey, hey.
Hey, hey, hey.
Heat. Heat.
Hey, hey, hey.
Alberta is preparing for an upcoming vote on whether to hold referendum on separation. Is there anything to learn from Brexit? Ted Henley reports.
>> What happened with Brexit? should be seen as a warning to Alberta. That message for Premier Danielle Smith from a political scientist in Ireland. Ian Cooper has extensively studied the UK leaving the European Union.
>> She certainly should be looking at what happened to David Cameron and taking that as a cautionary tale. Otherwise, she's sleepwalking into trouble.
>> Cooper is originally from Alberta and has been teaching abroad for years. He says similarities between then British Prime Minister David Cameron and Premier Smith are uncanny. Both conservatives, both, he says, called for referendums to appease hardliners in their parties.
Neither wanting to leave.
>> A lot of what David Cameron did is he made choices in the referendum campaign that made it harder for his side to win.
And I could see Danielle Smith um making similar moves. Part of that is, for example, this very convoluted question that is going to be put on the ballot in October.
>> The Brexit vote was close, 52% to 48.
Cooper says the people behind the leave campaign made it sound like there would be no consequences. And you can see a similar thing happening in Al in Alberta where the people who are pushing for Alberta independence. There's no accountability for the kinds of promises that they are making about um how easy it'll be for Alberta to separate from Canada.
>> Cooper says he hopes to be in Alberta this fall to study the October referendum. Ted Henley, CBC News, Calgary. Overseas, five people trapped in a flooded cave in Laos for a week have been found alive. But now comes the hard part, getting them out. Shian Dejardan reports.
>> The first moments of contact, quiet relief as five people trapped deep in a cave in central Laos are found alive.
Two are still missing, but this is a glimmer of hope.
outside sheer happiness.
>> The group is said to have entered the cave last Tuesday looking for gold, but a downpour plugged the exit. Getting anyone out isn't an easy task, says one of the lead rescuers.
>> The collapse risks are high because you're constantly touching the roof and it's hand tucked. There's no support anywhere.
>> An unmapped cave system with barely enough room to move.
At certain points, the rescuers are forced underwater.
>> If there's a body, somebody in front of you, you're stuck and uh there's no way to turn around until you hit the next chamber, which can be 100 meter forward.
>> The cave in Laos is about 350 kilometers from a famous cave rescue in northern Thailand.
>> How many of you 13?
>> In 2018, heavy rain trapped 12 boys and their soccer coach in a cave for more than two weeks. Myself and my dive partner Rick Stanton were the first to find the boys.
>> John Philanthin was part of the complex operation to retrieve them. He says the situation in Laos is much different.
>> The smaller passage makes it more difficult to navigate, but it means there's probably less water involved and so pumping may be possible where it wasn't in Samang. You have a lot more control when people can breathe. It's as simple as that.
>> But more rain is expected.
>> Flash flooding is one of the most critical problems. Though this meteorologist says the monsoon season is expected to be quieter than normal.
>> That should allow them a chance to be able to pump out more of the water from the mine >> and venture even deeper into this cave in a race to find the others. Sheen Sha, CBC News, Toronto.
>> Summer isn't here just yet, but much of Europe is already dealing with a major heat wave.
>> This is quite uncomfortable. Well, you know, it's hard to walk and explore in this weather.
>> Several Western European countries being hit. Temperature records being smashed.
And not just by a little. The UK and France both recording their hottest days in May ever. Experts say it's because of a heat dome. That's a high pressure front acting like a lid on a pot trapping hot air for days, sometimes weeks. The extreme heat is being blamed for multiple deaths and it isn't expected to break before the end of the week.
And here's a look at downtown Windsor.
I'm not so sure about records being broken here, but we'll find out what our weather's going to be like. That's next.
Hey, hey, hey.
What you doing?
Heat.
Hey, Heat.
Oh, hey.
Meteorologist Colette Kennedy is here.
Colette, we just heard about temperature records being broken in Europe. I don't know if we're breaking any of those around here, but it's been shorts and t-shirt weather, that's for sure. How are things looking?
>> Yeah, we're on kind of the cusp of some of the heat that's actually to the west of us. But you're quite right, well to the east of us, they've been breaking records. Third day in a row uh there in parts of southern England and beyond with uh temperatures in the mid30s. And speaking of 30s, yeah, there are heat warnings in Canada and the prairie provinces here and talking about some low to mid30s uh through many of these regions, too. and it building so continuing to move eastward into Manitoba and uh pushing those temperatures up towards the end of the week and the weekend over towards Winnipeg as well. So we get the benefit of the drier conditions uh just sort of on the cusp of this dominant ridge of high pressure but not the extreme heat as that heat dome is building there over the middle part of the continent essentially. So look at our current temperatures here. 22 Chattam Kent, 23 Windsor. Again, uh where the reporting station is when you get the wind coming off the water and we've got that northerly flow, it makes a big difference. Sarn at 14. Get inland a little bit and and it feels uh certainly different now. Just a pinch of humidity.
I mean, really, that's about it that uh we're experiencing here. We know still lots to come into southwestern Ontario as we get deeper into uh the spring, but into the summer months. Our sustained winds, you're getting a look at some of those uh coming out of the north to northeast and a few areas where we're getting some stronger gusts, even gusting over 40 kilometers per hour. And that northerly flow, we have that tonight. It backs off a little bit and then tomorrow as well. So, still a cooler feel tomorrow. Uh these are a few of these showers that are rotating from northwest to southeast. Uh so in a couple of hours, could a stray shower or sprinkle uh make their way down towards Windsor? It's possible. We have a very slim chance of uh something very light coming through or generally light uh depending on the timing there coming through later on tonight. Otherwise, we're just talking about dry and sunny skies during the day. And we'll hold on to that. A little more cloud cover into eastern Ontario, but not dealing with anything. and we begin to get quite dry after day after day after day without rainfall. Uh lows tonight 12 to 13, 22 tomorrow. So a little cooler because of the northerly flow. We spike back up on Friday and then pretty comfortable into the weekend and into the beginning of June.
>> 20s throughout the week. Appreciate this, Colette.
>> You're welcome.
>> Appreciate you all watching as well.
That's our show for today. I'm hoping it doesn't rain tonight. We don't see those showers and sunshine all the way. See you again tomorrow.
