A stark empirical reminder that understanding probability doesn't negate the reality of negative expected value. It’s a textbook demonstration of how the house edge inevitably turns a "mathematical experiment" into a predictable financial loss.

£35 mix of National Lottery UK scratch cards.Added:
Ooh, we going to win.
Hello and uh welcome to Life of Paul.
And if my GCSE maths haven't failed me, I got £55 of cards in front of you. So, some Well, Deal or No Deal. I do like this card, I really do. Loaded Lines, I think pretty much everybody likes that card except for me.
I don't know why. I don't I'm not a big fan of this card this card card card, I don't know, this thing.
And I got a load of um £5 or £10 cuz I do have this theory you've got just under 1 in 10 odds of winning on this.
So, you can only win a fiver or tenner.
So, you know where I'm going with that. I I think it's worth a punt. I got 10 of them. Be interesting to see if I get at least one winner on that. 1 in 10 doesn't guarantee a chance those odds, but I think uh worth a punt. Got 10 of them. And that one just to make it up to a round figure. So, £35 pound of cards.
Let's go scratching. There we go. Let's spin that camera.
Okay, let's start off with the pound cards and we're looking for fingers.
Bank. Then you're looking for three of a kind.
I've only got one of these, so I'm not expecting anything spectacular.
Ooh, never a grand.
Ooh, never 100,000 pound.
Somebody's got to win it. Fiver?
Nah. It's a dud. They usually are the one pound cards. Now, I got 10 of these.
Like I said, I'm hoping I'm hoping at least one of them is a winner. So, uh fingers or times two. If we get times two on it, it's a tenner.
Can't be anything but, can it?
Ooh, we got a win.
Chance is four. Can you get two fingers?
Be interesting. I'm going to might [clears throat] as well look that up.
Can you get two fingers? But it's a winner. And I'm going to come back to that, actually.
I've never done that before, but I'm going to leave you in suspense.
Let's keep going. I'm going to blitz through these, don't worry.
Da da da da da da. So, we've had our one win.
We know it's either a fiver or a tenner.
If we get one more win, I know we've got a minimum of a tenner.
Come on, bend it. Where am I going?
There we go.
I'd love to see that times two.
Do do do do do do.
Don't worry. I I won't wait till the end of the video to scratch here. I'll wait till the end of these things. See if we get a fiver or a tenner.
What do you reckon?
You reckon a fiver?
Do you reckon a tenner?
Get in.
Yes, baby. We got two.
So, we've either got 10, 15, or 20 pound.
Can we do it again? Can we get one more?
I think there's going to be a few people do this. Just buy 10 of these.
I got a feeling. And if you do buy 10 of these, let me know how you get on.
There's a fair chance that you'll get 10 duds.
But I just think if you get at least one win one win Here we go. That's one.
Okay, so we had two winners.
Da da da da da da da da.
And it's four.
A fiver, cuz it is.
And Ho ho, baby. Tenner. [clears throat] Hey. So, we got one of each.
That's a nice That's a nice result. So, 10 of these, 15 quid.
Get in.
There you go. I bet you weren't expecting that, were you?
If anybody else wants to try that, let me know how you get on. 10 of those fivers or tenners.
And no lying. No saying that you won 100 quid or something like that. Tenner on each one. But although you technically you are supposed to could, but yeah. Love to know how you get on if you do try it.
But I don't want to get everybody spending money they don't have. So, only only buy them if you can afford them.
Um bills and food come first.
Red carpet and a chest.
I can't see Oh, there it is.
Sometimes I can't see for looking.
A wad and a limo.
Lucky fingers and a gem.
Oh, there [snorts] he is. Cheeky little bugger.
Ring of X and a TV.
>> [clears throat] >> A diamond bin bag.
There he is.
Watch and some Kit Kats.
A hairy plane and a wad.
Ring and a cup.
>> [snorts] >> A bank.
And holidays. Ah, it's a dud. Ah, got the better of me.
But wait.
There's more.
So, I'm going to go down this time.
Watch and a voucher.
Lucky fingers and a bin bag.
Bars and a ring.
Yeah, I know this is a popular card with a lot of people, but meh.
It's just bingo with symbols.
Holidays and a wad.
And why do people prefer bingo with symbols over bingo with numbers?
I much prefer bingo with numbers.
>> [snorts] >> And a ring of X.
A cup and a gem.
Come on, present.
Pot and a bank.
Cheese and a diamond.
A VIP and a hairy plane.
We are not getting that present now.
One, two, three lines. That would be We get a pound.
Which isn't enough.
No win.
All right.
Come on. Don't let the one pound card shut you up.
Wad and a VIP.
Got to wait for it. I know this is going to be a big win. I don't know where that thing just came from.
But cheese and a pot. Just got a feeling it's going to be a biggie.
At least three pound.
Crown and a pound necklace.
TV and news.
Lucky fingers.
Pound and a ring.
Pound and a ring.
Um we got wallet and a watch.
There he is.
A cup and a red carpet.
Bin bag and a voucher.
Gem.
It's going to be a dud. Oh, no. Please don't let them be duds.
It is a dud. Airplane. All three are duds. Told you I don't like this card.
Blah, whatever. Anyway, we're moving on.
To cards I do like. I got three of them all from the same strip. But then again, saying that those Loaded Lines were three cards from the same strip.
>> [sighs] >> All right, looking for matchy matchy or multipliers. So, watch and a bank, fridge and a spotlight, chest and a ruby, wad and a card, phone and a coin, diamond and sofa crown and a bin bag.
Wallet and rings, lectern crown, key and a pot, safe and a checkbook, safe and a briefcase, pound necklace and a nugget, TV calculator, snap tree.
10 or 11. 20 or 25. 50 54.
Ooh.
Come on. Come on, those £1 cards are showing up the real cards.
Diamond wallet, TV and a briefcase, nugget and a phone, spotlight crown, um tree and a calculator, safe, ruby, sofa, key, pot, watch.
Let's hope for that X as I go down.
Multiplier.
Lectern and snap, crown and coin, rings and a bank, card and wad, pearl necklace, lectern, chest, bin bag, Kit Kat and a fridge.
14.
24.
58. It's never dirt.
Yeah, I always start so well.
Last chance, come on.
>> [snorts] >> There we go. Last chance.
Pot and a TV, calculator, bank, bin bag, fridge, tree and a key, pearl necklace, a watch, spotlight and a briefcase, Kit Kat, snap, chest, and thank goodness for that. Another chest.
We've got a win.
Huh.
Cool.
They can win more than once, apparently.
So, let's see if we can do that.
[clears throat] Coin and a calculator, ruby, crown, wallet, lectern, wad and a check, diamond crowd, just like you lot, the diamond crowd.
Phone and rings.
Sofa, nugget.
11.
25.
>> [panting] >> 55. Two cr- two chests.
Oh, don't be an Owen special. You God damn you, Owen. I haven't even scratched it off and I know it's a fiver. God damn you, Owen.
Er.
I have no faith in you anymore. It's always an Owen special.
But there you go. At least we got something at the end. A fiver. So, um yeah, there we go. So, £5 back on a £5 card. Pathetic. Cuz we got £5 back on a £1 card. And we got £10 back on a £1 card.
Pathetic £5 cards. Anyway, I do like that. I do like this fiver or tenner.
It's exactly the kind of card I was banging on about for many, many, many years. Finally, we got it. Um and again, if you if you've got the money, if you've got the money to to spend, and you fancy going out and getting 10 of these, I'd love to know how you get on with 10 of these. All you need is one win and you got at least half your money back, haven't you?
Or all your money back. Or in my case, a nice little profit. But yeah, there you go. So, um what we got? £35 in play, £20 back, £15 down. If it weren't for you guys, it would have been an absolute horror show.
Oh, well. It is what it is, and it ain't what it ain't. I hope you enjoyed that.
If you did, let me know in the comments.
Don't forget to um well, I'm going to start saying it. Don't forget to hype.
